The Foundation of Unconditional Love In a couple weeks, we celebrate a holiday devoted to the people who’ve been our superheroes, guides, champions, and role models: our mothers. They are the people who cared for us and made sacrifices so that we could grow up healthy and happy. You don’t have to give birth to be a mother, either. Mothers who’ve adopted a child or taken in a foster child are among those we celebrate this month. We’ve seen strong women and mothers make their mark throughout history. Harriet Tubman led the underground railroad, freeing hundreds of slaves and bringing hope to many more, before taking in orphans and the elderly after the war. Maria Von Trapp (of “Sound of Music” fame), became mother to the A Tribute to Our Superheroes

House, Michelle protected her children from the public eye and spearheaded a healthy eating campaign.

Often, the women we think of as our superheroes have to overcome unparalleled challenges. One mother explains,“I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain without being homeless ... By every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.” She was working on a book, for which she’d received “loads” of rejection letters. Finally, in 1997, a publishing company picked it up.That book was “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone;” the mother and author was J.K. Rowling. Two of our Realtors, Cristina and Diane, are moms, and they’re exceptional ones at that. I’ve watched both these women nurture their kids with love and act as role models for them. As their kids got older, they displayed unconditional love toward them, despite the challenges of the teenage years. Part of parenting is being willing to go through potential challenges with your kids. By overcoming these challenges, they grow into better human beings. Cristina and Diane never waver in their commitment to do the right thing for their kids, even during conflict. I’ve watched Diane and her daughter grow closer, and they’re best friends now. She’s close with her son, as well, even though he lives out of state. That’s another aspect of parenting that can be difficult — letting go. Diane has had to accept that her son is setting out on his own now and starting his life on the East Coast. Acceptance and unconditional love are the basic ingredients of parenthood.

These women and mothers are our superheroes.

To Cristina, Diane, and all the mothers out there, happy Mother’s Day!

Help the Kids at St. Jude’s Wi t h a Re f e rral Your referrals also help the kids … We will donate $500 for each buyer or seller referral you send us that leads to a successful sale. We’re going to treat everyone you refer like royalty — so not only will they thank you, but your referrals will also help the kids at St. Jude’s.

Andy Says...

Tax returns (or extensions) have just been filed, so now let’s talk Tax Relief . If you received our previous newsletters, you will recall our goal to raise $25,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We could use your help, and I believe you can benefit from the tax relief as well. St. Jude’s has a full house of kids fighting for their lives. For them and their parents, taxes are not “top of mind”— health is, living is, and surviving is. As you may have heard, St. Jude’s provides pioneering research and treatments for kids with cancer and other life- threatening diseases. Unlike any other hospital, the majority of their funding comes from individual contributions. And consistent with the vision of their founder, Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion, or a family’s ability to pay. In fact, thanks to generous donors, families never receive a bill from St. Jude’s. This is why my team at DiMarco Realtors has resolved to do what we can to help. For every house we sell this year, we are donating a portion of our income to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Our goal, again, is to raise $25,000 to help them in their quest to heal, save, cure, and comfort children under their care.

Bottom line:Your referrals are in good hands, and they help us contribute to a good cause.

I believe charitable donations will somehow come back to us (and you as well) far beyond a simple tax deduction. A core value at our company is that “the size of the hole you give through is directly proportional to the size of the hole you receive through.” You and your referrals mean more than ever to us. Please know we are extremely appreciative and thankful for you being a special part of our business.

With all my appreciation,

DiMarco, Realtors®

Irena Sendler (1910–2008) When the Nazis invadedWarsaw in September of 1939, Irena Sendler, a 29-year-old social worker and mother of two, hatched a scheme to rescue Jewish children from the brutal ghettos. Along with many friends and colleagues, she smuggled out nearly 2,500 Jewish orphans, hiding infants on trams and garbage wagons and guiding Emmeline Pankhurst (1858–1928) Despite being a wife and the mother of five children — two of whom died tragically young — Emmeline Pankhurst became one of the fiercest advocates for women’s suffrage in the late 19th century. After founding theWomen’s Social and Political Union in 1903, she and her cohorts adopted an aggressive strategy to raise awareness for the issue; they began by buttonholing politicians and staging rallies, then progressed to vandalism, window smashing, and arson. She was instrumental in the movement. Pankhurst lived to see women gain the right to vote in 1928. kids through a labyrinth of secret passageways beneath the city.

Moms make the world go round. After running the gauntlet of childbirth, they raise and guide us throughout our lives, shouldering the tremendous burden and responsibility of motherhood. Mothers are in turn formidable, kind, powerful, gentle, wise, fierce, patient, supportive, empathetic, driven, and full of love. In honor of Mother’s Day, here are three historic moms who never stopped fighting for what they believed in. Sojourner Truth (1797–1883) Before she escaped from NewYork slaveholder John Dumont, Sojourner Truth had at least three of her children sold away from her. When Dumont went back on his promise to emancipate Truth and her infant daughter in 1826, she took the girl and fled to an abolitionist Quaker family, but she was forced to leave her other daughter and her 5-year-old son, Peter, behind. Soon after, she learned that Peter had been illegally sold by Dumont to a slaveholder in Alabama, so she went to court and secured his safe return. It was the first successful case brought by a black woman against a white man in American history. Truth went on to become a prominent abolitionist and a speaker for women’s rights, delivering her famous impromptu speech,“Ain’t I a Woman?” in May of 1851.
