Close to Our Hearts

We’re on a Mission With St. Jude’s to Fight Childhood Cancer

knew we could do something on a larger scale. That’s how we got involved with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The things that led me and each member of my team into real estate are different from what fulfills us today. We initially pursued real estate because we all have a passion for beautiful and functional homes and properties. But once we started working in the field, we realized our greater satisfaction comes from helping people. We often face some daunting situations helping our clients through transactions. And this is where we really get to know our clients — and we become close. Through all these experiences, we found that we love working with people. The real motivation that keeps us passionate about this business is helping others and getting feedback from them. Everyone on our team contributes to charitable organizations. Diane has been involved with Operation Smile for years — it’s amazing how the relatively inexpensive surgery provided to children born with cleft palates changes lives. Cristina sponsors a child, Edward, in Kenya, and donates both her time and money to a local organization in Vista, called New HavenYouth and Family Services. New Haven is a private, not-for-profit, multi- service agency that provides professional care, education, and treatment for youth and families with emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges. And among other charitable activities, Chris and I have been involved with the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

We thought about what was close to our hearts. When we learned about what St. Jude is doing through their research hospital to help kids and their families who can’t afford medical treatment, we knew this was it.We felt passionate about giving back to an organization that helps kids in the toughest circumstances. Think about it — there’s nothing a child can do if their parents don’t have the funds to pay for treatment. We can only imagine the pain we’d feel as parents if our kids were sick and we couldn’t help them. Can you imagine? These children just wouldn’t get care. But St. Jude is changing that. While looking more closely at how they’ve made an impact, their stories really touched us. St. Jude provides outstanding medical services that kids can’t access elsewhere, and if parents can’t afford the bill, they don’t charge them. For any of you who’ve read or seen St. Jude’s “Meet our Patients” section — the stories of children who’ve experienced cancer — you know what I’m talking about. When you read about a kid named Zac who had a rare form of bone cancer, has gone through multiple rounds of chemo and an amputation, and is still fighting, still smiling — you can’t just read that and do nothing. So we’re giving back. St. Jude’s is our cause. In addition to other contributions we’re making, for every buyer or seller referral you send us that leads to a successful sale, we’ll donate $500 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We want to make an impact, and we want to bring you in on the mission. Thanks for joining us.

We are so grateful to be able to do this, and while we all continue to contribute on an individual basis, we, as a team, were inspired to make a bigger impact. We

support the families there. This is one way you can get involved, with two houses in the San Diego area as well as a chapter here. In addition to volunteering in a hands-on capacity, supporting cancer research is a crucial part of fighting cancer. DiMarco, Realtors ® has teamed up with St. Jude’s to support cancer research, so when you refer a friend to DiMarco, Realtors ® , you’re also part of giving back. October isn’t just the month of Halloween. For survivors, their families, and the many people who support the cause, it’s also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you’d like to be part of the fight against cancer, there are various ways you can get involved. Here are a few roles you can play in giving back. Participate in an event. There are events going on all over the world, from walks and “wear pink” days to creating a care package for your friend who’s fighting cancer. Sign up for a run or host your own fundraiser or “wear pink” event. Sharing educational information about spotting cancer and other supportive resources is also important, and it just takes a second to share the information through the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. website. Volunteer at a Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald Houses provide resources, like food, shelter, and a supportive environment, to families all over the nation going through challenging times when their children are sick. They rely on the valuable support of volunteers to help cook, clean, and

A Lovely Night for a Run

Should You Go for a Run After Dark?

Have you ever been driving home after dark and seen someone jogging on the side of the road? You might have thought they were crazy for waiting until so late in the day to go for a run, but there is actually research that suggests running in the evening is better than going for a run at any other time of day. Here are a few reasons why you should save your run until you can join all the things that go bump in the night.

The best time to run is honestly whenever you have time to run, but if it works with your schedule, nighttime running might provide your best workout ever. Just remember that if you do decide to save your run for after sunset, you should stay safe by wearing bright, reflective clothing, sticking to the left side of the road, and running only in well-lit, populated areas.

found that your body is better prepared to exercise in the evenings, since your muscles have been warming up all day. With improved muscular function and strength, you can push yourself harder and see greater improvement. You sleep better. You will obviously feel tired after a good run, so why not time it right and use this to your advantage? Research from the University of South Carolina found that people who ran before bedtime enjoyed a better night of sleep and increased energy levels when they woke up, meaning they felt more awake and better rested throughout the following day.

You can hit the snooze button. Many people who run first thing in the morning find themselves pressed for time. Hitting the snooze button is not an option, and with so little time, breakfast is usually a banana on the way out the door. Moving your run to the evening means you can enjoy a more leisurely morning. Not feeling stressed out first thing in the morning can also lead to a more relaxed day. You can push yourself harder. It can be hard to get a good workout in the morning after your muscles have been still for eight hours during sleep. A study at the University of North Texas

expensive, they last longer, give off more light, and don’t give off heat like other options, saving you money in the long run. Xcel Energy Colorado estimates that you’d pay about $13 a month with the old incandescent lights, compared to just 22 cents a month with LED lights. And there are plenty of fun, festive options to choose from. There are many safer alternatives to poking nails through electrical wiring. Look for plastic light clips that clip in over your gutter and hold the strands in place. Some metal clip options can be screwed into a wooden surface and will last years, so you don’t have to take them in and out each Christmas. In a pinch, clothespins will also do the trick. As you’re thinking about your home needs, know that DiMarco Realty is here for you through every season. Give us a call when you have a question, whether it’s about finding the best electrician or locating your new home. Don’t use staples or hammer-in nails to hang your lighting.

Holiday decorations may not come down from the attic for another month, but in the meantime, some prep work might be needed so your home doesn’t end up like Clark Griswold’s at the end of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” Especially when it comes to outdoor lighting, check to see that you’re not pulling a Griswold. outdoor lights — but his electrical system isn’t set up to match. As you saw in the movie, outlets and cords can get easily overloaded with lights, which can be a major fire hazard. The standard home has two exterior outlets, which may not cut it if you’re planning to bestow a festive glow. You could consider installing another outdoor outlet for the holidays. You also want to be sure you’re using extension cords that have the necessary ratings for your needs. For added security, consider using a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet to plug the cords into, protecting against electrical surges. Do choose fun LED lights. LED lights have several advantages over other light bulbs. Though initially more Don’t overload cords or outlets. Clark Griswold goes all-out with the

The Surprising Origins of Trick-or-Treating

Why There Are Kids on Your Porch Asking for Candy

angels, and the occasional demon instead of spirits. Eventually, costumed children started tearing through town begging for food and money and singing a song or prayer in return — a practice called “souling.” But when did they start dressing up as Minions? Starting in the 19th century, souling turned to “guising,” which gave way to trick-or-treating in mid-20th-century America, and the costumes diversified. So put on some clown makeup and a big smile, scoop up a handful of sweets, and scare the living daylights out of ‘em — ‘tis the season!

As Halloween looms and you load up your grocery cart with candy, you may ask yourself,“Why do I provide these spooky gremlins with a sugar high every Oct. 31, anyway?”Well, when your doorbell starts ringing around 6 p.m. this All Hallows’ Eve, you can thank the Celts for this tradition of candy and costumes. Halloween itself is a kind of mishmash of four different cultural festivals of old: two Roman fêtes, which commemorated the dead and the goddess of fruit and trees (not at the same time); the Celtic Samuin or Samhain, a new year’s party thrown at the end of our summer; and the Catholic All Saint’s Day, designed to replace Samuin and divorce it from its pagan origins. Long before there were young’uns on your porch dressed as Thanos with candy-filled pillowcases in hand, the Celts believed that Samuin marked an overlapping of the realms of the living and the dead. To trick the spirits leaking into our world, young men donned flowing white costumes and black masks — a great disguise when ghosts were about. The Catholic Church was never a big fan of these pagan traditions, so they renamed it “All Saints’ Day” and gussied it up in religious garb. By the 11th century, people were dressing up as saints,
