PERRY MASON, FOOTBALL, AND MY DAD WHY I BECAME A LAWYER WHO FIGHTS FOR THE UNDERDOG

It’s no surprise that I became a lawyer. Growing up in the small town of Shelby, North Carolina, I was starry-eyed and in awe of Perry Mason when he would defend his wrongfully accused client. His passion for his clients was matched by an equally staunch desire to see justice swing in favor of the public, and my dad and I would watch anxiously each week as he called out the real criminal on the witness stand. As we watched, I remember my dad saying that our family needed its own mouthpiece. And so, the seed to become a lawyer was planted by Perry Mason. My father supplied the dirt, and football gave it the nutrients it needed to grow.

I’ve always been

someone who cheered for the underdog. Maybe

this stems from my days of watching Perry Mason defend someone the public had already deemed guilty or

my years of fighting on the football field. But I don’t back down from a challenge. During my time as a probation officer, I had seen too

Football has taken me a long way, and for a few years, it gave me a career in the NFL and the briefly tenured World Football League. But it’s the values and the lessons that playing a tough and gritty team sport like football taught me that carried me to where I am today. On the field, you have some superstars who shine brighter than others, but if you’re doing it right, everyone is a star. I consider my team at Don Turner Legal Team my own family of stars, and I know I can trust them to put up the best fight for our clients.

law, but you can also win when you lose a case. As long as you give your best fight to prove innocence or for proper compensation for your client, you’re showing that you can fight like a winner. We cannot predict the outcome of the law,

Prior to hanging my own shingle as the Don Turner Legal Team, and after my short stint on the football field, I became a probation officer. My time working in probation was filled with nightly law school classes, and after graduating law school, I took and passed the bar. I opened my own office with another gentleman I knew, and I began accepting court-appointed cases. While I was practicing, I continued my training and education. Like I had done all those years in football, I knew I wasn’t done rehearsing my craft.

but we can do our best to do all we can for those who trust us to find solutions during the trying times in their lives. That’s exactly what Perry Mason taught me to do, and what the Don Turner Legal Team continues to do for every client that walks in the door.
