Dedicated to the Patient Experience

MEET KATIA ANTONIO

This month, I want to turn the spotlight over to one of our talented staff members, Katia Antonio. I am fortunate to work with many amazing people and a staff dedicated to every detail of service. Every day, they ensure the comfort of every patient who walks through our doors, and they make every moment memorable.

- Dr. Maddahi

I have worked with Dr. Maddahi for the past 11 years. The day I started was one of the best days of my life. On that day, I became a dental assistant. Dr. Maddahi hired me with high expectations. He wanted me to push past my comfort zone and realize my potential. In many ways, Dr. Maddahi served as my tutor. He taught me what I needed to know to excel as dental assistant. Through that tutoring, I eventually became a registered dental assistant. This allowed me provide a greater level of support to patients and to Dr. Maddahi. Since then, my role in the practice has expanded. Today, I still handle many dental assistant duties, but my primary role is as our back office supervisor. In this role, I work closely with patients in a more complete capacity. I like to compare my role to that of “party planner.” I’m here to make sure everything goes off without a hitch, from the time an appointment is scheduled to the day of the appointment. I also work with many of our new patients, getting them situated and helping them feel right at home. As back office supervisor (aka party planner), there can be a lot of pressure at times. When it comes to scheduling, I make sure there are no mistakes. If a case wasn’t properly scheduled or if there is a scheduling conflict, I’m there to take of it and keep things running as smoothly as possible. And keeping things running smoothly is easy when you’re surrounded by such a great team. The environment throughout the practice is nothing but positive. Everyone gets along wonderfully. The way we care about one another, you’d think we were family, rather than “just” co-workers.

This positivity carries over to patient care, as well. Coming in is like coming home. Going to the dentist can be stressful, and we recognize that. That’s why we’re so focused on comfort. It shouldn’t be stressful. It should be relaxing. Over the past 11 years, I’ve learned so much from Dr. Maddahi and all the people I work with, not to mention the patients. As a mother of two, I want the best education for my kids. I want my 14-year-old son and my 9-year-old daughter to learn as much as they can in their youth. A good education goes a long way, which I can speak to from working with Dr. Maddahi. He hasn’t just been a mentor for me, but he’s also been a mentor for my children. My hope is my kids will take what they learn, or the principles of learning, and go after opportunities that I didn’t have when I was younger. I continue to love what I do, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I get to make a difference in people’s lives. Whether a patient comes in for a cosmetic or general procedure — or for an emergency — they come in for a reason. They want to improve or restore their smile, and they want to leave looking and feeling great, and I get to be a part of that.

FACTS ABOUT FALL

The end of summer doesn’t have to signal an end to fun. How about sweater weather, Halloween parties, and football season? The list goes on and on. In fact, fall might be the most interesting season of them all. Here are five facts you probably didn’t know about the season. 1. It was originally called “harvest.” In a world that was far more agricultural, the season was defined by the harvesting of crops. It’s also a reference to the harvest moon, which was essential to farmers during the season. 2. Fall babies tend to be impressive. Not only does the world’s most common birthday, October 5, land in fall, but those babies have built an impressive resume. The British Department for Education found that they tend to do better in school, and also tend to live longer. 3. Weight gain is most common in the fall. It’s not only the Halloween candy or Thanksgiving turkey. Researchers believe it’s primarily caused by lower levels of

vitamin D. As the days shorten and temperatures drop, we tend to get less sun. It’s another reason to be careful about diet and exercise this season. 4. Autumn is good for the economy. “Leaf peeping,” which is a slang term for fall foliage tourism, is more than just a funny name. It’s also a $3 billion industry in New England alone. 5. People fall in love more in the fall. Men and women’s testosterone levels tend to spike in the autumn, which makes women even more attractive to men. A >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4
