An t i - Ag i ng DENTISTRY MONTHLY NEWS Gratitude in the Face of Adversity NOVEMBER 2020

There is a lot to be thankful for this year. As Americans prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving this month, the world is in a different place than it was just 10 months ago. Fewer people will be traveling to see family, so more people will be staying at home this holiday season. However, despite the challenges, we have been able to adapt and overcome. At our dental spa, we have turned to technology to consult and communicate with patients, and many families are doing the same. Instead of visiting one another in person, they’re relying on Zoom, Skype, and FaceTime. Families are also embracing smaller gatherings. Because people are traveling less and large gatherings can be risky, many extended families won’t be visiting, at least not in large numbers. In many ways, families are going back to basics. People are reconnecting with their closest loved ones — even if they’ve been “stuck” under the same roof for the past several months. The holiday season is always a good time to reconnect with the people you care about most. Whether you get to see one another in person, or you have to settle for a Zoom call, it’s important to catch up and talk about what you are grateful for this year. Focus on the positive and the things that bring you together as family and friends. For me, I’m thankful for the health of my family, my friends, and my patients. It seems that every year about this time, we talk about how thankful we are for our health, but this year it feels even more important. We have a greater perspective on how important our health is and how quickly things can change. It seems that every year about this time, we talk about how thankful we are for our health, but this year it feels even more important.

I’m thankful that no one I know was hospitalized or passed away as a result of COVID-19. Not everyone was as fortunate. I know people who fell ill, but thankfully, they only had mild symptoms and successfully recovered. In the midst of this pandemic, as we figured out how to navigate it in the spring and into the summer, I’m thankful to our patients who were ready to return to the office after we were closed earlier in the year. The trust we have built with patients means a lot, and I remain thankful for their continued trust. It was a stressful time for everyone, but we kept an optimistic outlook. As we approach the end of the year, we continue to operate as close to normal as we can. We maintain exceptionally high cleanliness standards to give our staff, our patients, and everyone who visits our office peace of mind. I’m also thankful for the scientists and researchers who have been hard at work all year long in an effort to develop therapeutics for this pandemic. While this virus will be with us for some time to come, every day brings us closer to the day when we can say it’s behind us. That is a hope that I am also grateful for.

Why Is Spinach So Good for You?

Potent Protection Against Disease The abundant antioxidants in spinach mitigate a staggering number of health problems. For starters, spinach has kaempferol, an antioxidant that can protect the body against cancer. Additionally, the antioxidant quercetin, also found in spinach, has been shown to have positive effects on brain health, heart disease, and Type 2 diabetes. Other components of spinach can also improve blood pressure and protect eye health. Versatile in Meal Preparation Aside from the more scientific reasons that make spinach a superfood, you can prepare and consume spinach in so many creative ways. You can eat it raw as a part of a salad, throw a few leaves in a smoothie, cook it in stir fry, or bake it into some brownies. If you have a bag of spinach in your fridge, there’s no shortage of ways you can get some of those amazing health benefits. Just don’t expect to suddenly vanquish all your foes like Popeye did.

If the reason you know spinach is good for you is because either your mother told you, or you saw Popeye the Sailor down a can before a fight and gain superhuman strength, you might not understand exactly why it’s so good for you. Rest assured, your mom wasn’t lying (although Popeye might have been stretching the truth). Spinach is actually one of the most nutritious and versatile foods you can add to your diet. Here’s why. Incredible Nutrient-per-Calorie Count Three cups of spinach contain about 20 calories. However, those 3 cups also contain almost no fat, 2 grams of protein, 3 grams of carbs, and 2 grams of fiber. On top of that, you get more than 300% of your daily dose of vitamin K, which supports bone growth; 160% of your daily dose of vitamin A; and around 25%–40% of your daily dose of vitamin C, both of which help the immune system function properly.

Anti-Aging Dentistry Turns Back the Clock Get Your Bright Smile Back!

As the days get shorter and pumpkin spice lattes remain available, more people are reaching for a cup of flavored coffee to get them through the day. Though this may only be an occasional indulgence, it comes with a price, and we don’t just mean the one at the register. Coffee, like many beverages, such as tea, red wine, and red and green juices, stain your teeth. Over time, these stains “age” your teeth and give them a dull beige or gray appearance.

This is where anti-aging dentistry comes in. When time takes its toll — and our lifestyles catch up to us — anti-aging dentistry can return our teeth to the pearly whites they once were. If you look in the mirror and you aren’t happy with what you see, rest assured knowing there is a solution close at hand. Dr. Maddahi’s decades of experience, coupled with the latest advancements in anti-aging dental technology — including veneers and dental implants — can help restore your smile to its youthful glow. Even pumpkin spice lattes are no match for today’s dental technology! The great thing about anti-aging dentistry is that it’s not just about removing stains or discoloration. It’s about improving the overall health of your smile. When left alone, worn and aging teeth can lead to discomfort, sensitivity, pain, and further oral health complications, including infection. Getting back what time has taken away and taking years off your smile starts with a call and a consultation. Simply call 888.592.0974 to set up your free consult and together, we can determine your best next steps and help you achieve a beautiful, younger-looking smile!

Of course, a daily coffee drink plays only a small role in the overall story of our teeth. Everything we eat and drink has an effect on our oral health. Our teeth are susceptible to stains and discoloration over time, and they also wear down and weaken. Though brushing, flossing, and rising every day is important, it may feel like it just isn’t enough to achieve the bright smile you want.

You Don’t Have to Say ‘No’ to Your Favorite Drinks

Put Tannins in Their Place

Who doesn’t love a good cup of coffee or tea? In the season of the pumpkin spice latte (and soon, the peppermint latte), coffee and tea sales are through the roof. But, as we all know, many of our favorite drinks come with a trade-off. Coffee, tea, wine, and soda all have a tendency to discolor and stain our teeth. Why is this so hard to avoid? And how does simply sipping a cup of tea cause discoloration?

indulge in dark juices or smoothies and want to avoid their negative effects, it’s best to drink them through a straw, but over time, even that may not be enough. Green, black, and even herbal teas also contain tannins. Many people avoid darker teas because they worry they will stain their teeth, but consuming lighter teas, such as green tea, can stain your teeth over time, too. Drinking a lot of green tea can give your teeth a dull gray appearance, while darker teas, like black tea, give teeth a beige or yellow appearance. Even herbal teas can stain because, you guessed it, they also have tannins. Consuming beverages with a biodegradable or reusable straw is your best bet to mitigate staining in the short term. Additionally, be sure to rinse out your mouth after enjoying any of these color-rich beverages. Using teeth-whitening products, such as those found at OralEssentials.com can also help renew your smile. Refer a friend, get a brighter smile! That’s right, every time you refer a friend to Dr. Maddahi, you get one FREE teeth cleaning!

Here’s a closer look at how these drinks work against us.

Coffee, tea, and wine all contain specific compounds called tannins. Tannins are polyphenolic biomolecules that can adhere to the rough surface of your teeth and cause discoloration or staining. Over time, and as we consume more tannin-rich beverages, the shade gets darker and more obvious. Drinking dark juices and smoothies can also cause staining. Blueberries, cherries, pomegranate, and other dark fruits and berries commonly used in juices are also packed with tannins, even more than coffee. If you This butternut squash, oven-roasted and caramelized to perfection, could almost pass for dessert. You’d never guess it’s a dish loaded with vitamins and antioxidants! Is ‘Glamping’ the Perfect Winter Getaway?

Is ‘Glamping’ the Perfect Winter Getaway? CABIN FEVER HAS NEVER BEEN SO STYLISH

Step 1: Decide which kind of lodging you want. Glamping shelters come in all shapes and sizes depending on the level of comfort you desire on your trip. The most rugged glamping lodgings usually still include a wood-burning stove and a nice comfy bed, whether you opt for a log cabin or a specialized glamping tent (sometimes called a yurt). However, some of the more posh options include amenities like fresh linens, private bathrooms and showers, fully stocked kitchenettes, and even TVs. Step 2: Decide how you want to spend your time. Obviously, the point of glamping is to spend time in the great outdoors with winter activities, such as snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and other fun snow activities. However, glamping really shines during the frigid evenings. You can retreat indoors, throw some logs in the stove, prepare some hot cocoa or cider, and just watch the snowfall from your window. There’s no right or wrong way to glamp. All that matters is spending time in the wilderness with all the comforts of home — all while feeling refreshed and at peace.

When COVID-19 struck the U.S., travel restrictions had people canceling their vacation plans left and right. This meant that many would-be vacationers had to find some getaways a little closer to home — namely, camping trips and their fancier cousin, glamping trips. If you haven’t heard of “glamping” before, it’s essentially glamorous camping. You have access to the beautiful, rugged outdoors as well as all the comforts of home. While traditional winter camping certainly wouldn’t be a relaxing getaway for most people, glamping during the winter months can give you access to the peace of the outdoors like you’ve never experienced before without so much as a shiver or sniffle. If you’ve decided to make glamping your go-to method of escape from the cabin fever that besets us all during the cold, dark winter days, you might be thinking: How can I make sure I have the best glamping experience possible? Luckily, there are a few tips and tricks you can apply to any glamping location to ensure that your time away from home is just as relaxing as that Caribbean cruise would have been.
