TRAINING: MONTHLY FIRE EXTINGUISHER INSPECTION PROCESS
ACCESS Ensure extinguishers are in their proper location and visible. Extinguishers should be easily accessible and not blocked or obstructed in any way. PIN AND GAUGE Check to see that the pin and safety seal are fully intact and in place. Check the pressure gauge to ensure that the arrow is in the ‘green zone’ and operable. PHYSICAL CONDITION Confirm that there is no visible physical damage to the body, hose, or nozzle including but not limited to dents, cracks, corrosion, leakage, etc. Check to see that the nozzle is attached and clear of any obstructions. Confirm that the extinguisher is full by lifting it. If it has powder, give it a shake to prevent powder from settling. Mount extinguisher back on wall hanger and secure. INSPECTION TAG There are two sides to every inspection tag: one with the monthly inspection information that should be completed monthly by the employee, and one with the annual inspection information that should be completed within the last 12 months by a licensed contractor. Make sure the annual inspection has been completed within the past 12 months. When all steps (Access, Pin & Gauge, Physical Condition) have been completed, employee should sign their initials and date the tag for the monthly inspection.

There are two sides to every inspection tag: one with the monthly inspection information that should be completed monthly by the employee, and one with the annual inspection information that should be completed within the last 12 months by a licensed contractor.

HOW TO TEST Visual Test: Visually test the exit sign under normal operating conditions. Under the sign’s casing is an indicator light. When it is connected to building’s electrical supply, the light will be green. Physical Test: Most devices have a “push to test” button located on the casing. Press and hold the test button for 30 seconds. The 30-second minimum is essential for proper testing because even a nearly dead battery will supply several seconds of power. You may see a slight change in the luminosity or brightness. Replace the battery if the exit sign will not stay lit for the required 30-second timeframe.

TRAINING: OPERATION AND TESTING OF EXIT SIGNS
HOW THEY WORK Exit signs are placed strategically throughout the property to designate the path to take for evacuating the building. Exit signs are controlled by hard wiring into the building’s electrical system, and using a battery back- up for the light in case the power goes out. The hard-wired system keeps the battery fully charged and ready for immediate use, and an internal switch will trigger the light during a power outage. Exit signs have energy saving, long-life LED lamps. These lamps remain on at all times through the building’s power supply. In the event of a power outage, the back-up battery will illuminate the LED lamps. They can be single faced or double faced models; they are equipped with snap-in directional arrow plugs that can be removed to illuminate the arrow pointing in the direction of the exit door. Otherwise, the plug (insert) remains in place to show only the exit which is typically located directly over the exit door itself. Both the LED lamps and the batteries need to be checked on a monthly basis to ensure 100% operative capability. In addition, it is critical to inspect for the proper direction of the arrow. In the event of a power outage, emergency lights operating on the battery may operate for a minimum of two (2) hours.

HOW THEY WORK There are several different styles of emergency lights. Some styles are coupled with the exit sign and are commonly used in the stairwells or main entrances. Emergency lights are designed to provide lighting in the event of a power outage. An emergency light contains one, 6 volt battery that activates two (2) bulbs and it is hard wired to your building’s electrical supply. This allows constant charge to the battery. At full charge, the battery holds enough power to illuminate an average of 90 minutes.

HOW TO TEST It is important to test your emergency lights each month to ensure proper operation in the event of a power outage. Most devices have a small “push to test” button located on the casing. Next to the test button is an indicator light that signifies if it is connected to the electrical power. If it is connected, it will illuminate red. When testing emergency lights, hold the test button for 30 seconds. This will test both bulbs and the battery. The emergency light bulbs will illuminate and brightness should remain constant for the full 30 seconds. If the brightness dims within the 30 seconds or a bulb does not light at all, it is time to replace the bulb(s) or battery.

HOW TO CHANGE THE BATTERY Remove the front casing; in most cases it pops off. Two wires (of different colors) are connected to the battery, one is positive and the other is negative. The battery is held in the casing by a velcro strap. Pull the strap and remove the battery. When disconnecting the old battery, simply tug on the connector (not the wire) to disconnect power, then reconnect the new battery. Place the casing back on the front and click into place.
