‘Hope Is a Good Thing, Maybe the Best of Things’
HOW WE ARE STAYING POSITIVE IN THESE TRYING TIMES
Have you seen the movie “The Shawshank Redemption”? If you have not, it is definitely worth the watch. The film was released in 1994 and stars Tim Robbins as Andy, an innocent man who tunnels his way out of Shawshank prison over the course of 19 years. A year after his escape, he reunites with his jailhouse friend Red, played by Morgan Freeman. They are able to find each other because of a letter left buried for Red by Andy after his vanishing act. That letter is the reason “The Shawshank Redemption” has been on my mind lately. In it, Andy writes, “Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” Those words stuck with me the first time I watched the film, and right now, in this crazy time of illness, social unrest, violence, and political turmoil, they feel more important than ever. A lot of things have felt out of my control this year. I cannot stop the protests, cure COVID-19, or pick our next president. But through it all, I have held onto hope for a brighter tomorrow. Here at Eagle & Fein, our team has done the same, and we remain dedicated in our focus to the most meaningful and important things to us personally, the things where we can make a difference. We would love for you to join us on this journey. To get started, we have been studying the work of John Wooden, one of the all-time great college basketball coaches. Wooden led the UCLA Bruins to 12 national championships, and he was also a Hoosier who played for Purdue back in the day! After coaching for years, he went on to write books on leadership, including “The Pyramid of Success,” which is particularly inspiring to me. The pyramid the book references is a diagram Wooden created of all of his core values, including ambition, adaptability, resourcefulness, fight, faith, patience, integrity, reliability, honesty, and sincerity. Overall, 25 core principles are represented in the pyramid, and every one of them is admirable.
This fall, if you are feeling down, ask yourself, “What are my core principles?” You will be amazed by how writing them down and striving to follow them will improve your outlook day to day. You will find not only more hope in focusing on those things but also more success. As far as the wider world goes, the way I see it, no matter what happens this fall with the presidential election, social upheaval, and pandemic, our country is going to be okay. Here in America, we have a history of overcoming anything that stands in our way, and these new challenges are no different. This scary time is not really so different from the Halloween holiday coming up this month. Halloween might be terrifying for a night (especially if you are not a fan of horror movies or haunted houses), but it always passes. In the grand scheme of things, it is just a blip on the radar, and we all get through it together. If you need someone to turn to in these scary times, our team is here for you. When the coronavirus pandemic hit the U.S. in March, home workout equipment flew off the shelves almost as quickly as hand sanitizer and toilet paper. Resistance bands were one of the first things to become scarce. Even in May, The New York Times was still posting warnings on its exercise articles, citing “COVID-19 stock shortages” on resistance bands and explaining that “we expect problems to persist.” So, what exactly is a resistance band, and what makes it so special? If you’ve been wondering about them since they made the news, now’s your chance to find out. WHAT IS A RESISTANCE BAND? A resistance band is basically a giant elastic band used for strength training, physical therapy, and muscle rehabilitation. PT clinics stock them for their patients, but they’re often used in gyms and homes, too. The bands come in a variety of styles, sizes, and materials, but most are either basic circles or have loops on each end to be used as handles during workouts. They’re called resistance bands because they offer resistance when pulled, making them great for building muscle. THE GREAT RESISTANCE BAND SHORTAGE OF 2020 Why COVID-19 Made This Exercise Gadget a Hot Commodity
WHY ARE THEY SO IRRESISTIBLE RIGHT NOW? First and foremost, resistance bands are a great tool for home workouts. They’re light and fold easily, so they’re simple to store. They’re also useful for a variety of exercises. You can stand on one end of the band and grab the other to do biceps curls, for example, or pin it under your foot and grab both ends while lunging to make your workout more challenging. The possibilities are endless, particularly when combined with other equipment like dumbbells or a pullup bar. WHERE CAN YOU GET ONE? At the time of this writing, resistance bands are still out of stock in some places and selling out quickly everywhere. ResistanceBandTraining.com has high-end bands in stock, though, and Bodylastics.com is also a good source, as it gets shipments regularly and offers customer updates. The bands can range from $8 to over $80, though, so it never hurts to check Amazon or big box stores like DICK’S Sporting Goods for inexpensive options — you might even catch them on a restock day!

We do not want to give too much away, but let us just say it involves religion gone wrong, supernatural powers, and the most terrifying prom of all time. ‘The Exorcist’ — Demon possession takes center stage in this nightmarish 1973 hit. As Brian mentioned in the cover of this newsletter, scary situations do not last. This pandemic will end, just like Halloween night passes each year. On an even smaller level, horror movies are a great example of here-and-gone scares. They might freak us out for an hour or two, but as soon as the lights come up, the spookiness disappears. Maybe that is why so many people love watching them during the Halloween season. If you are a horror movie buff or just want to dabble in the macabre world of werewolves, vampires, and ax murderers this fall, you cannot go wrong with these Halloween classics. ‘Friday the 13th’ — No Halloween movie list would be complete without a mention of this famous series of slasher films! There are 12 “Friday the 13th” films total, but the original 1980 flick tells the bloody story of a murderer let loose on innocent camp counselors. ‘Halloween’ — Another famous franchise, this series of 11 films is a Halloween mainstay. The first in the series came out in 1978 and stars Jamie Lee Curtis as a hysterical babysitter being pursued by her child charge- turned-murderer and mental patient. ‘Scream’ — This creepy story follows a high school student named Sidney as she attempts to escape a Halloween killer dubbed “Ghostface.” Does it get more classic than that?

Of course, if lighthearted Halloween movies are more your thing, “Hocus Pocus” and “Ghostbusters” are always great picks, too! For a more modern classic, try Jordan Peele’s “Get Out.”

With so much doom and gloom in the news right now, it is easy to get overwhelmed by it all. If you are feeling
down, that is completely understandable — but we just might have a solution. You can still find plenty of uplifting stories out there as long as you know where to look! This month, we have rounded up a few to cure your pandemic blues.
AUSTRALIANS TURN UNSOLD BEER INTO RENEWABLE ENERGY
When the first wave of COVID-19 lockdowns hit Australia, bars and restaurants were forced to close, and behind their doors, thousands of gallons of beer expired. However, instead of pouring it down the drain, a local water treatment plant turned the 40,000 gallons of donated booze into biogas, then into electricity! Energy levels at the plant have reached a new high, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase “getting a buzz.”
NO MOVIE THEATERS? NO PROBLEM!
On the other side of the world, Canadians and Americans are working on their own pandemic frustration: movie theater closures. One company, Beyond Cinema, just might have a solution. In September, it started touring North America to bring “floating theaters” to cities like Denver, Los Angeles, and Orlando. The events are similar to drive-in movies, but instead of arriving in cars, viewers board Beyond Media’s sanitized boats and cluster around a huge screen on the water! Who would have imagined that in 2019?
For the third consecutive year, our team will participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, Oct. 3, in Indianapolis. The Walk’s goal is to raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association’s fight against Alzheimer’s disease. During the Walk, there is a Flower Garden Ceremony in which every participant raises a flower that color-coordinates with their connection to the fight. Purple flowers, for example, are for those who have lost someone, orange flowers are for supporters, blue flowers are for those living with the diagnosis, and yellow are their caregivers. Every Walk has one white flower raised during the ceremony, which represents the first survivor. Join us in the quest to raise the white flower. Every dollar counts in this fight. KITTENS SAVE THE DAY DURING QUARANTINE
A recent OnePoll study of 2,000 cat owners revealed that three-quarters of participants credited their furry friends with helping them get through quarantine. These heroic cats and kittens helped ease their owners’ loneliness and reduce their anxiety. They also gave them someone to talk to and “brought a feeling of positivity to their days.” What is the moral of this story? Well, if you have been feeling down, it might be time to adopt a cat!

Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and your family from illness, but sometimes life gets in the way. Maybe you need to travel for work, to help a relative, or just to keep your kids from bouncing off the walls. If you

They cost less than $10 on Amazon and make kicking in a door much more difficult. For maximum security, bring a door alarm. Simple travel alarms hang from the handle of a door and have two prongs that slide between the door and its frame. When the door opens and the prongs separate, that triggers the alarm. These simple devices send thieves running, and Lewis N. Clark makes a model for just $14.99.
