WELCOME TO EDU by PURPOSE EDUCAtiON
Welcome to EDU- Education Demands Understanding. EDU is a publication created by Purpose Education dedicated to all things education. The goal of EDU is to bring news, ideas, and awareness in the area of education and politics, focusing on K-12 education. As a lifelong educator, it is a personal and professional belief that if more people understand the realities of education, and how public schools affect society, then more change can be made. Education is what has built this country and teachers are the forgotten foundation. My hope is with every issue you read something new that sparks an idea to use in supporting education. My only request is you share EDU and any knowledge gained with the next person in an effort to support educators and students everywhere. Education Demands Understanding. Enjoy!

Here We Are:
So what does a diploma truly mean?
As another graduation season closes thousands of students walked across the stage out of high school and into society becoming a part of the everyday life in which we all live. As a society, we depend on parents and schools to ensure students are equipped with the skills to be productive, law-abiding citizens. However, in reality, not all students come from backgrounds that provide those needed skills and therefore schools are the last line of defense.
*Students are ready to interview for jobs?
*Students are ready to handle conflict without resulting to violence? *Students are prepared for the responsibility of being on their own in college? *Students have the skills to make a solid living without a college degree?
Answer:
For many students, the answer to the questions is no. A diploma is nothing more than a piece of paper that indicates the passing of classes. The lack of preparedness is not laid at the teacher's feet. Educational leaders have become so absorbed in test scores as indicators of learning and teaching and leadership has become so politicized, that the top leaders of education truly have no clue about K- 12 education. Although many students are prepared for adulthood.
As the class of 2022 graduates, the hope is that in the last 13 years these students will have acquired the skills that make this world a better place through furthering their education and/ or becoming a part of the workforce. Hope that they have the self- confidence to be bold in their journey and steadfast in times of trouble. Hope they have a respect for all people and pride in whatever life path they choose to take. Hope for the Future:
"When students graduate there should be confidence in the diploma that means students are ready to positively contribute to society!"

Student Loan Update
$$
$$
Student Loan Forgiveness is still being debated between the Biden Administration and Congress. Students loan forgiveness has occurred for many borrowers who attended "for-profit" colleges such as Corinthian Colleges. However, the biggest question still remains, "Will there be blanket forgiveness for all student loan borrows? As of now the answer is no. There is still discussion on forgiving $10,000 for all student loan borrowers but there has been no final decisions in terms of legislation and executive order. Check out the reminders below to stay on top of your student loans.

N.E.W.S.
There has been an increasing trend with business owners and foundations gifting students financially. From tuition paid to stocks in companies, these gifts are the cherry on top to a diploma. Hopefully, more people who are in the position to help will do the same.

STOCKs FOR EVERYONE!
Air B&B Founder Gifts Stocks to graduating Seniors
"Always come back to your roots..." and so the saying goes and Joe Gebbia did just that while giving a graduation speech at his former high school, Brookwood High School in Georgia. The former graduate and co-founder of Airbnb gave each graduating senior 22 stocks of shares in his company. This was a complete shock to graduates who were overwhelmingly excited! . "I definitely don't remember the advice that I was given at my graduation and I don't expect you to either...So, I thought of a way to help you remember. I would like to give you a piece of my dream to help inspire yours and let you know that it is possible." - Joe Gebbia

TEACHERS
Disrespect for teachers has reached an all time high.
UNDER
From students yelling and cursing at teachers to more violent crimes such as physical assault. Teachers need protection now more than ever. In most cases where teachers are the victim there is little to no recourse and teachers are left at the mercy of the students and parents. Because of the lack of respect and little
support, teachers are leaving the profession at alarming rates. Of all the new laws being proposed and passed in various states, teacher protections are nowhere to be found. Below are some examples of teachers being attacked by ovesrtutdhenptasst year. Click below for more

School Shootings.
As graduations end, it is sad to say there is no end to student violence. There have been 22 school shootings from January to May 2002 in the United States. Some have occurred inside of school buildings while others have occurred outside the buildings but still on school grounds. One of the common threads among these shootings is the young age of the victims and suspects that are committing these acts of violence. As gun control is debated and legislation is written, it is imperative that the lost voice of teachers is rediscovered. Teachers have a grasp on this problem in a way no politician can even begin to understand but are rarely included in the decision-making process. As mid- term elections are occurring it is vital that politicians are voted in that are listening to teachers. To help prevent these strategies from happening politicians need to come together to provide adequate protection for schools, substantial funding for mental health, and common-sense gun control laws for everyone.

Until Next time...
Another year down! Once again we have reached the end of another school year. Everyone can describe this school year differently but one thing we can all agree on is that it's over! Rather you are a parent, educator, or student this year has had its share of ups and downs, and now it is time to take a BREAK! As we all look forward to some fun in the sun, let's also take time to reflect on the past school year. Look at things that worked well and did not work so well. Think about continuing to use what works at home and at school, or what new things you would like to try for next year. There are many educators that will not have a break this summer and will be working toward making sure that next year will be even more successful than the last. Remember no matter if you have a long break or short break we all need to RELAX, REFLECT, REJUVENATE! Enjoy the summer!
