Physical Therapy Lagniappe Meet Wesley!

What an honor it is to be on this month’s newsletter! Despite being the new guy here at Elite PT, the crew has welcomed me into the family with open arms and amazing opportunities. Not only am I lucky to be in the wonderful profession of physical therapy, but I am also blessed to be here at Elite and work alongside some of the kindest and most knowledgeable in the field. I became interested in physical therapy while I was an undergraduate student at UL Lafayette. I was observing under a local PT from Marksville and fell in love with the profession! The amount of critical thinking, clinical decision making, patient interaction, and rapport building were all aspects I found invaluable to the profession. Upon graduation from UL Lafayette, I was accepted to the LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport Physical Therapy program in 2013, graduated there in 2016, and subsequently began my career here at Elite PT. Since September is generally regarded as back-to-school month, I have also decided to go back to school and further my education by beginning the process to become an orthopedic certified specialist (OCS). Through obtaining this specialization, I hope to gain the next level of clinical excellence in order to help my patients achieve their desired goals! But all work and no play makes Wes a dull, dull boy. When I am not treating patients or studying, you can find me out running the streets of Alexandria. I have been an avid runner for the last few years and have even completed three half-marathons. Eventually, I hope to complete a full marathon, but you can bet that I will still manage to find the time to watch some LSU and Ragin’ Cajun football!

All in all, I am extremely blessed to be in a profession that I love and be surrounded by friends and co-workers who enjoy it as much as I do here. From all of us here at Elite, thank you for choosing us to be your physical therapy provider. I hope that everyone has a fun and safe back-to-school season. GEAUX CAJUNS and GEAUX TIGERS!

SCHOOL LUNCH HACKS Get by When School Lunch Isn’t Cutting It

Jokes about the quality of school lunches are about as old as lunch itself. But children’s health is no joke. The United States Department of Agriculture reports that 67 percent of middle school students who eat school lunches are overweight. Packing a better lunch can be a hassle, especially if you’re trying to choose food your children actually want to eat. Here are a few hacks that make bag lunch better for your kids.

the dressing. Try using a jar, but put the dressing in first, followed by items that won’t get soggy, like corn or cherry tomatoes. Put the lettuce on top. You can also use jars for dippable foods like celery sticks and peanut butter. Thermoses aren’t just for your morning coffee. Kids with a cold lunch from home might look over at Tommy’s unpleasant school lunch and think, “Hey, at least the mystery mush is a hot meal.” Use thermoses to keep chicken nuggets and other warm foods at their ideal temperature. Give the power to the kids. Nothing tastes better than the power of choice. Homemade fruit cups, hard-boiled eggs, and other healthy foods

have a refrigerator life of more than a week. That gives you time on the weekend to make up a snack bar for your child to pick from every morning. Make fruit cool again. Colorful melons look more delicious if you use a small cookie cutter to cut them into interesting shapes. Also, pen ink looks great on an unpeeled banana, so try inscribing a funny joke or an embarrassing message, like “I love you,” on the outside. With these tips, your child will never have to worry about being served mystery mush again, and they’ll be happier and healthier for it.

Utilize jars. You want to pack your kid a salad, but you keep losing the itty-bitty container for

September Testimonial “I came to Elite Physical Therapy after undergoing a knee replacement on my right knee. What can I say in words that would reflect my utmost sincere thanks to the staff? Special thanks to Abby, Jayme, Ross, and Jennifer for pushing and encouraging me to get the most out of physical therapy and speeding up the recovery process. After eight weeks, I’m mobile, back at work, and able to perform a variety of tasks I wouldn’t have thought possible after only eight weeks.

“You folks are tops in physical therapy, and I’m always touting your praises to everyone who asks how I’m doing after surgery. I have to have a ‘boo-hoo’ moment, as I’ll miss each and every one of you more than you can imagine!” Nancy Lemoine

See You at the Game

It’s almost that time of year again. No, not the harvest festival or Halloween. Here in the South, fall means one thing: football. Everybody is excited when football season comes around. It’s not so much a game as a lifestyle this time of year. Fridays are devoted to our local high school teams; Saturdays are for college football; and Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, and well, any additional time is for watching the NFL. We look forward to kicking off the season and watching the Saints, LSU, and Louisiana College play. We’re also thrilled to give back to our local football community by offering our services.

For many seasons, Elite’s team of PTs have volunteered their time to football and other athletic events to assist athletes at their most crucial times. Thanks to additional training in emergency management, our staff knows how to respond quickly and accurately to these situations. From ASH to Bolton to Menard High, our team is on the sidelines of the Central Louisiana football fields. Every weekend in the fall is devoted to treating the athletes who go out and give it their all.

We are on the sidelines because we enjoy the game as much as you do, and we want to be there, ready to assist the players who need our services. At Elite PT, we know the athletes are working hard to excel in the sports they love so much. We want to be right there with them, doing all we can to help them be the best they can be. If you want to be at your best, come see us at Elite PT.

• The Museum of What?

The Museum of What? Museums are a staple of vacations no matter where you travel. Everyone has heard of the Louvre and the Smithsonian, but you might be surprised to learn about some of the stranger museums around the world. For nearly every passion, there is a building somewhere dedicated to it. Take a look at some of the weirdest. Sulabh International Museum of Toilets Delhi, India A functioning toilet is something everyone takes for granted until they don’t have access to one. In India’s capital, you can explore the fascinating history of commodes. From primitive examples you would never use today to gold- plated bathroom thrones from palaces across the world, the variety of toilets on display is staggering. Divided into three sections — ancient, medieval, and modern — you’ll be shocked at how much you can learn about history and culture through an examination of the ways a society flushes (or doesn’t). The Museum of Bad Art Dedham, Massachusetts There are plenty of museums dedicated to exceptional artwork from history, but only one dedicated to less-than-successful artistic endeavors. The Museum of Bad Art, or MOBA, promotes itself as the home of “art too bad to be ignored.” A trip to MOBA will leave you smiling, laughing, and feeling a little better about the fact that you’re not Picasso. Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum Osaka, Japan It’s not just college students and video gamers who love ramen. Since the invention of the instant noodles by Momofuku Ando in 1958, ramen has evolved into a beloved dietary staple from Japan to Jamaica. The museum

named after its creator offers you the chance to look at some of the strangest versions from around the world. As an added bonus, you can even design your own packaging. Bring along some chopsticks, as there are plenty of samples to slurp up. The Kansas Barbed Wire Museum Rush County, Kansas The World’s Strangest Museums

Plenty of museums are hands-off, but that’s usually to protect the precious objects held within. At the Kansas Barbed Wire Museum, not touching the exhibits is just sound advice. The development of barbed wire was instrumental in settling the American

West, and this museum pays tribute to the ingenuity of those farmers who wanted to make sure their

cattle stayed on their property and thieves stayed out.
