A FUN AUGUST AWAITS!

Beth Gets a Break, Dr. Elkins Watches Baseball, and You Can Hear Him Play!

Welcome to August!

Last month, I mentioned that our family may try to sneak away to McCall this summer — if Beth’s class schedule permitted and we could find the right day. I’m happy to say we found time! This month, our family will head to McCall, stay in a cabin, and go jet skiing. We can’t wait to get back to one of our favorite places, and I know Beth is anxiously counting down the days. She has a rare and brief break from school this August. The supportive husband I am, I’m also looking forward to Beth’s break, and not just because I think she deserves it. Recently, I had the opportunity to help Beth by volunteering to be her test patient as she practiced putting in IVs. I started having dental school flashbacks! I remember having to practice on my classmates and asking others if I could practice on them. It’s the price you pay because practicing on a real human is the best experience you can get.

In addition to visiting McCall, I’ll also be taking a very short trip to Los Angeles to check off two items on my bucket list: I plan to fly into Los Angeles on a Saturday, and that night, my brother Russ and a few of our friends are going to see the Los Angeles Dodgers play at Dodger Stadium. Then, the next day we will see the Los Angeles Angels play at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, and I’ll fly back home that night! It will be a very short trip, but I cannot wait to see these stadiums in person. There’s no other feeling quite like watching a baseball game live at the stadium. I almost become like a kid who’s going to Disney World! It’s just magical for me. This trip also gets me two stadiums closer to completing my goal. Finally, it wouldn’t be a full August without a few music dates. You can come see Russ and me play at Homestead Bar and Grill in Meridian on Aug. 13, or watch us at Lakeview Golf Club on Aug. 27. I hope to see you there.

So, I’m also looking forward to Beth’s break because I need a vacation from being a human pincushion!

I’m kidding, of course. I’ll happily help Beth with her schooling, and I’m incredibly proud of her for tackling this aggressive study load. It’s a“blast from the past”watching her feel like she’s barely keeping her head above water as she studies. I watch her go from one big project to the next and can’t help but reminisce about my late nights in dental school. I remember those days well. You would become so stressed and enamored by your schoolwork, that when you did have some downtime, all you could do was stare at the wall. You’d just wait for what would come next! Beth has been handling it all very well, and while I know she’s looking forward to this break, I can tell she’s excited about what she’s doing.

And I hope your final month of summer is just as exciting as mine is shaping up to be!

WILL A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES CHANGE FOREVER? Movie Theaters in Post-Pandemic Times

later or do chores. And you’re in it with the whole theater. Comedies are funnier when you laugh with others. A hero’s triumphs are more spectacular when you cheer them on together. (Who didn’t go nuts when Captain America caught Thor’s hammer in“Avengers: Endgame”?) When you leave the theater, you feel a little closer to the strangers around you, and having been immersed in the movie alongside your friends, you can discuss how you liked the movie on the way home. Of course, movie theaters will still change as a result of the pandemic. Theaters are working to become more digital, some even moving to eliminate paper tickets and creating options to order concessions before your arrival. More theaters may promote private viewings of movies so people can be more careful about whom they watch movies with. Some theaters are also trying to create more of an“experience” for moviegoers by offering a wider array of food and even comfier seats. However, these changes, especially given the circumstances of the past year, are hardly surprising. The movie theater industry has been evolving for over 100 years, and it certainly won’t stop evolving now.

Out of all the businesses hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, few were affected

more than movie theaters. For the past year, as movies have debuted on streaming services rather than in theaters, many industry leaders, critics, and theatergoers alike have raised the alarming question: Did COVID-19 kill the movie theater industry? In short? No. Not by a long shot. Though the past year has left the industry somewhat beleaguered (AMC closed 60 theaters permanently, Cineworld reported losses totaling $2 billion, and the Alamo furloughed more than 5,000 employees).Yet, despite all of this, a night at the movies is here to stay. When aVox reporter reached out to various moviegoers about whether they would attend theaters once the pandemic ends, many of them said yes because streaming a film in their living room just can’t provide the same experience.

Watching a movie in a theater completely immerses one in the experience — you can’t pause the film to watch

Cheyenne’s 7 Secrets for a Successful Back-to-School Check-Up!

Have great timing. The time of the day can make or break an appointment. Don’t schedule appointments during lunch or naptime, and don’t interfere with sports or other extracurricular activities. Have your easy child go first. If you know one child is easygoing at the dentist, schedule their appointment first. Their siblings will pick up on their calm demeanor. Have a snack first. A hungry child is not a happy patient! Give them a little food before they come in so they won’t be hungry. (Bonus points if they brush before an appointment!) Let go of your anxiety. If you’re nervous, your children will be nervous, too! Leave your own dental anxieties at the door. Relax even if your child won’t cooperate. We all have bad days, and sometimes children just do not want to do what we need them to! This can be especially true for little ones. If they panic, it’s best that we all stay calm and work as a team. See you soon! –Cheyenne, RDH

Regular dental appointments are a vital part of helping children grow up to become healthy and strong — especially in school. According to the American Dental Association, dental diseases cause children to miss 51 million school hours each year! You can help prevent this with a back-to-school dental appointment before school even starts. This summer, conquer back-to-school appointments with these seven secrets for success! Plan ahead. It’s easy for the school year to sneak up on you, and a back-to- school dental appointment may not be on your mind until August. Call us right away if you don’t have an appointment yet, and be sure to book next year’s appointment well in advance. Encourage age-appropriate dental habits at home. Moms and dads can help their children by making sure kids brush two times per day for two minutes each time. Watch them until about age 12 to correct any bad habits. And don’t forget the floss!

SUMMER VEGETABLE GREEK SALAD

Inspired by CookieAndKate.com

Ingredients For the vinaigrette: •

1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped

For the salad: •

2 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 garlic clove, minced 1 tsp dried oregano

1 head romaine lettuce, chopped

GOOD CHEER Beer lovers, rejoice! Idaho is the world’s largest hop producer, and more and more people are taking advantage of our agricultural bounty by opening breweries in the Treasure Valley. Share a few of these treasures with visiting family members and their only question will be “How did we not come here sooner?” • • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped 1/4 cup Kalamata olives, pitted and halved • • 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled Optional protein choices: 1 cup cooked chickpeas or 6 oz Genoa salami

MOUNTAIN RANGES Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, we don’t have to go far to find mountaintop winter activities. If skiing or tubing is your idea of winter fun, Bogus Basin is just a short drive away, and heading to McCall makes a fun weekend getaway. ... AND RIVERS Not only are we surrounded by the Payette and Boise rivers, Idaho is also home to the deepest gorge in North America: Hells Canyon. Take that, Arizona! • • •

Out-of-town relatives who are visiting for the holidays might wonder what makes Emmett so special. But we already know the Treasure Valley is full of gems — and we don’t just mean the rocks. Here are some additional reasons Emmett and The Gem State are great. WE’VE GOT SUNSHINE On average, we have 210 sunny days per year. Compare that to 144 rainy days in Portland and we can feel pretty happy about all our free vitamin D. Directions • • • • • •

1 cup grape tomatoes, halved 1 small cucumber, seeded and chopped 1 cup yellow bell pepper, chopped

1/2 tsp honey

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

3. If you plan to serve all the salad at once, drizzle the dressing over the salad to lightly coat, then toss to combine. Otherwise, store the vinaigrette and salad separately, then dress each portion before serving.

1. In a medium bowl, whisk together vinegar, mustard, garlic, oregano, honey, and salt. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil, whisking until well combined. 2. In large servi g bowl, toss together the romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, bell pepper, red onion, parsley, olives, and feta (as well as the chickpeas or salami, if desired). JOKES DAD Why are Saturday and Sunday so strong ? Because the rest of the days are weak days.

When does a joke become a “dad joke?” When it becomes apparent.

Honey Isn’t Always Yellow! Facts If you use honey on your oatmeal or toast, you’re probably accustomed to a thick, yellow-gold spread. But not every jar of honey fits that norm! The sweet treat can also turn shades of blue, green, or red — it all depends on what the bees eat.

Fairy

Back in 2012, beekeepers in France were shocked to discover their bees were producing bright blue and green honey. The source of the color was a mystery, until they managed to follow the bees back to the source: a local factory! The factory was processing old M&M candy shells, and the bees preferred snacking on them to feasting on nectar. Who knew! In 2010, a similar situation occurred in Brooklyn, NewYork. The local bees discovered vats of Maraschino cherry juice and their honey turned bright red.

She Collects A LOT of Teeth

TheTooth Fairy collects about 300,000 teeth from children all over the world every night. It’s believed that theTooth Fairy uses these teeth to build the fairy community where she lives.

She Helps To Promote Healthy Habits

These super-colorful honeys are rare flukes, so if you spot one, let us know.

Possibly the best thing the Tooth Fairy does is to help parents promote good dental hygiene from a young age. For years, many parents have told their kids that a perfect and healthy tooth is much more valuable to the Tooth Fairy than a decayed one. Schedule your child’s next dental exam with Cherrywood Dental Associates to keep their teeth as valuable as possible for future Tooth Fairy visits.

3 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR PET'S GOLDEN YEARS EASIER Try These Tips Out Today

Last year, actor Ryan Reynolds posted on Instagram for his 13-year-old golden retriever, Bax.

“Happy Birthday, Bax,”he wrote.“I’d bake you a cake, but it would kill you. Not because you're a dog. Everything I bake is poison. If I had to go to war, I'd just bring a toaster oven.” Jokes aside, A-listers love their pets as much as we do! Age is tough on animals, but there are ways to keep them comfortable in their senior years. Pet Stairs Pet stairs bridge the gap between the floor and the couch and/ or bed. Browse sites like Chewy and Build-Basic to learn how to make your own! Raised Food Bowls Raising your pet’s food bowls will make it easier for them to swallow their meals and avoid the discomfort of arthritis.
