WARMER DAYS, BASEBALL, AND CHERRIES GALORE

Summertime in Idaho

Russell had a great season with baseball, and I had some proud moments as his coach. Our team finished in first place in our league, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of kids. It was a cool feeling to be responsible for selecting our players during tryouts with my co-coach and to find we’d picked a great team.We were happy with the players we got — they were team oriented, supported each other, worked hard, played hard, and had a great time on the field. While winning is, of course, a great bonus, it was the best to see them having fun. Evie got home at the beginning of May, and it’s so good to have her here! We were all pretty excited. Well, Leila may be slightly less excited than everyone else because she had to give her room back. She was a good sport about it, of course, and it’s great to see all our kids hanging out again. You might see Evie around Elkins Dental this summer. She’ll be training with us as a dental assistant. We’ll provide her with skills she can take with her wherever she goes, from Utah to Broadway. My brother Russ and I are excited to play at the Cherry Festival this year, and we’ll make a day of it. It’s become a tradition for us. We usually hang out at the festival, play our show, and enjoy a relaxing day among the sights and sounds of the event. It’s definitely something we enjoy as a whole family, from the music to the tasty cherries. I could easily eat a bunch of them. Even though I stick to a few here and there, it would be too easy for me to get a stomachache. Of our kids, Adam is the only one whose fruit intake we have to monitor because he could eat a bucket of cherries if we let him! Later this month, Beth is flying to Texas for her aunt’s wedding, and she’s really excited to be there. As Beth’s youngest aunt, the bride is just a couple years older, and they’ve been really close their whole lives. I know it’s special for both of them that Beth can be there. Evie and Anna are going with her, so it’ll be a fun girls’ trip for them. Meanwhile, I’ll have the rest of the gang with me, and I’m sure we’ll find plenty to keep us busy. We have our first trip to McCall planned to take out the Jet Ski, and I can’t wait! What are you looking forward to this summer?

Evie and I headed to work

Russell and I after a great season

It’s that time of year! The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and the kids are ready for summer. They just want to have fun, and I can’t blame them. This weather has me excited to spend days on the lake with our Jet Ski.

Prepare for Family Fun at an Amusement Park This Summer

PACKTHE ESSENTIALS Find an over-the-shoulder bag or strap on a fanny pack to carry your cash, keys, snacks, water bottles, sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses. You’re spending the whole day outside, so make sure you’re considering the weather when you head out and always slather on a generous amount of sunscreen. Lastly, wear comfortable walking shoes to prevent blisters and aching heels. You’ll have more fun if you know you’ll be prepared for anything. WATER COSTS HOWMUCH !? Amusement parks are expensive, and when you spend a whole day seeking thrills, you’re eventually going to need sustenance. Check the park’s rules before you leave, but most will allow your family to bring in a few snacks, like fruits or granola bars, and a reusable, empty water bottle. Many parks will have a drinking fountain near the entrance where you can fill up before exploring. If you plan to eat or drink at one of the establishments in the park, peruse the food options on the park’s website ahead of time to get an idea of what is available and how much money you should bring. Adventure awaits this summer! Don’t let a lack of preparedness keep you from enjoying a 135-year-old tradition.

On June 16, 1884, the first roller coaster in the nation opened to eager and brave participants at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. In the years since the first riders climbed aboard the Switchback Railway 135 years ago, roller coasters and the amusement parks that house them have changed dramatically. But the thrill that attracted all those first participants still remains. Celebrate the nation’s love of heart-stopping adventure by visiting an amusement park this summer. Follow these tips to make the most out of your trip. I’M LOST! Before you head out, review park maps and ride descriptions. Create a list of the attractions everyone in your group wants to see and plan out your route ahead of time. While some spontaneity can be fun — it’s a vacation, after all — the sheer size of many parks coupled with high anticipation can be overwhelming if you aren’t prepared. Planning ahead will save you a few headaches and disappointed family members.

Sealants Save the Day!

WHYWE LOVE SEALANTS • They can reduce tooth decay by up to 90%! • No numbing is needed. • We use materials free of BPA and toxins. • They don’t change the appearance of the tooth.

From the time you’re little, you brush, floss, and take care of your teeth in an effort to avoid cavities. And the good news is you’re not on your own. There are various dental

treatments that protect your teeth when combined with a good oral hygiene routine, and one of those is sealants. This simple treatment “seals” up the grooves in your molars, so they are less susceptible to decay. Sealants are one of the best precautions you can take to prevent cavities. Have you ever noticed how your molars have deep grooves? The bristles of a toothbrush can’t get that deep, so even when you’re an awesome, twice-a- day brusher and flosser, there are areas you won’t be able to reach. Sealants help protect those areas by keeping bacteria out and making it harder for decay to occur.

Sealants are a simple, cost-effective way to prevent cavities. They’re especially effective for patients ages 6–12, soon after the molars have emerged. If you have a little one, talk to us about the right time for their treatment. Age isn’t the only factor — just about anyone can benefit from sealants to protect their teeth and reduce the risk of tooth decay, especially those who are at a high risk. While we can’t put sealants on teeth that already have fillings, we can still help prevent cavities that haven’t formed yet. Let us help, and let sealants save the day!

OUR 2019 CRUISE WINNER AMANDA AND RAY’S MEXICAN GETAWAY In addition to being an awesome Elkins Dental patient for the past eight years, Amanda was the winner of our 2019 Cruise Getaway, and she and her husband, Ray, just got back from their magical vacation in the Mexican Riviera. “It was incredible,” Amanda told us. “We had a blast!”This was an extra special trip for Ray. As Amanda shared, “It’s the biggest vacation Ray has be n n. He was thrilled. He was just in heaven!”

GOOD CHEER Beer lovers, rejoice! Idaho is the world’s largest hop producer, and more and more people are taking advantage of our agricultural bounty by opening breweries in the Treasure Valley. Share a few of these treasures with visiting family members and their only question will be “How did we not come here sooner?”

MOUNTAIN RANGES Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, we don’t have to go far to find mountaintop winter activities. If skiing or tubing is your idea of winter fun, Bogus Basin is just a short drive away, and heading to McCall makes a fun weekend getaway. ... AND RIVERS Not only are we surrounded by the Payette and Boise rivers, Idaho is also home to the deepest gorge in North America: Hells Canyon. Take that, Arizona!

Out-of-town relatives who are visiting for the holidays might wonder what makes Emmett so special. But we already know the Treasure Valley is full of gems — and we don’t just mean the rocks. Here are some additional reasons Emmett and The Gem State are great. WE’VE GOT SUNSHINE On average, we have 210 sunny days per year. Compare that to 144 rainy days in Portland and we can feel pretty happy about all our free vitamin D. Along the way, their cruise stopped in Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, and Maz tlan. In Cabo, we treated Amanda and Ray to an excursion. A nda s ys, “We got to board a pirate ship, and the crew took us snorkeling. They were hilarious!” Summing up the experience, Aman shar s a favorite saying from her mom: “‘If you d n’t plan it, you won’t do it.’ It was so nice to win that cruise because we’d plan ed o going on one som da , and we got to start making those memories now. It was a total blessing.”

Follow the Cherry Trees

In honor of the 85th Emmett Cherry Festival, here are some fun facts about these sweet little fruits. Ninety-three feet is the farthest someone has spit a cherry seed, with the honor going to Brian Krause of Michigan. “Follow the cherry tree” became a slogan in ancient Rome because soldiers would spit out the pits on their campaigns, from which cherry trees sprouted. To find the old roads, all one had to do was follow the cherry trees. Even cavemen ate them. Archeologists have found fossilized cherry pits in prehistoric caves all over Europe and Asia. There are over 1,000 varieties of cherries. (But we only see about 20 of those in the store.) Have a fun time at the Cherry Festival this year!

• 1 head romaine lettuce, shredded • 1 large tomato, seeded and diced • Salt and pepper, to taste

• 4 hot dog buns • 1 tbsp mayonnaise

Directions 1. Heat a skillet to medium and fry bacon until rendered and crisp. Transfer to a paper towel to drain. 2. Fry hot dogs in bacon drippings, creating a crust, and cook until warmed through. 3. Using a dry skillet or oven, toast buns. 4. Spread mayonnaise on buns, place hot dog and bacon inside, and top with tomatoes and lettuce. Serve.

IS YOUR PILLOW AFFECTING YOUR HEALTH?

What Bad Pillows Do to You STIFFNESS The way you sleep is connected to the type of pillow you use at night. For instance, a side sleeper needs a thicker pillow to support their neck, while a back sleeper needs a thinner one. Your pillow should allow your neck to rest comfortably without straining your muscles. If you’re sleeping with the wrong kind, it can cause stiffness and pain in the neck, which can lead to dizziness, anxiety, nausea, and headaches. ACNE Breakouts are no fun, and they happen to everyone. Pillowcases tend to collect oil and dirt through constant contact with your skin, hair, and the environment. This buildup can irritate your skin and result in acne. By washing your pillowcase once a week, you can significantly reduce unpleasant breakouts. ALLERGIES Along with collecting dirt and oil, pillows can accumulate dust mites and dead skin cells, which are key triggers for allergies. If you suffer from severe allergies, it’s a good idea to invest in a dustproof, zipper-locked pillowcase to keep irritants away. There’s one excellent way to see if you need a new pillow or not: Try bending it in half. If it returns to its original shape, your pillow is fine, but if it doesn’t, it’s time to invest in a new one.

If you’re feeling stiff and tired during the day or constantly waking up at night, it could be because of your pillow. Many people don’t think about their pillows when it comes to health, but your pillow plays a significant role in your overall well-being. REST Everyone knows that getting eight hours of sleep per night is ideal for a healthy body and mind, and your pillow can make all the difference in how you sleep. A lousy pillow causes discomfort and makes it difficult to relax, which can prevent you from getting the quality of sleep that is best for your health.
