HOW I DO MY BEST RELAXING

AND WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT

After my mind has been going all day at work, the first thing I need to do is quiet it down when I get home. Exercise is one thing that helps me do that. I got an exercise bike this spring, and I’ve noticed that when I work out, I sleep so much better. I’ve been making it my goal to do it 15 times for the month — I’m already at 12, so I think I’m doing pretty good. My routine after work usually looks something like this: exercise, take a shower, then sit around in my bathrobe for the rest of the night. I tell people that my favorite part is when I’m done working out and can sit around and relax. I feel like I’ve earned it! Honestly, though, my favorite way to relax and turn off my brain is with Candy Crush. I can just tune out when I’m playing and not have to think too much about anything! I feel calmer. Anyone else? For Dave, it’s the opposite. He has a physical job, so he needs to relax physically. Something that’s been a great way for both of us to relax is the little two-person pontoon boat we got off of Craigslist. Sometimes Dave and I will just go sit on it and float in the pond. It’s very relaxing. Bella also tends to be a great antidote to stress. We love walking around with her in our yard and driveway, watching her hunt for moles and run around without a care in the world. She’s such a happy puppy. Hers is an outlook I want to adopt more often. I think it’s so important to take time to relax, especially when you’re going through something hard. That’s why this spring, to help our team manage the stress that came along with the pandemic, we provided mental health days. They were a way to help our team members find a little more time to take care of themselves. Several of us have been working at home alongside our spouses, some of us have been doing it while caring for kids who are home, and all of us have been taking care of our regular work on top of extra worries.

All of these situations create some sort of tension, so we decided that if we took turns, we would each get the break we needed without causing undue stress from having more than one person out on any given day. Each of us had a little more time to unwind and take care of ourselves and our people. For most of us, the last couple of months brought more time at home. Maybe your work even slowed down a little bit or came to a halt, whether you wanted it to or not. But let’s be real — even if you’ve been home, even if you haven’t been working, it’s hardly been relaxing. We’ve all been operating with a certain undercurrent of stress in our lives. Because of that, I’d encourage you to find some healthy ways to relax. Maybe it’s going for a walk with your spouse or kids. Maybe it’s playing some Candy Crush (hey, no judgment here!). Maybe it’s talking to someone you care about, playing around with your pets, or dancing along to your favorite feel-good song. Our team member Audra recently got a hammock, and when it’s not raining outside, she’s been enjoying relaxing outside in it. Maybe, like Audra, you can do your best relaxing sitting in your hammock or chair and just taking in the clouds and sky.

Another example of costs are those related to the case, including the costs of court reporters for depositions or the costs for an expert witness to discuss the case as well as the cost of an expert deposition. If the costs outweigh the projected recovery, litigation is probably not a good idea. In some cases, it might be clear that if you file, more money will become available down the road. Why go through the headache of the process if the costs associated with it will put you right back where you started? ‘Read’ the insurance company. The actions of the responsible party’s insurance company can spell out a lot when you’re trying to decide if filing is the right move. Insurance companies often want to settle rather than go to court because it means a guaranteed loss rather than risking a bigger loss during a trial. If an insurance company is quick to settle, it means they see clear liability and damages. But if they willingly want to go to court against your claim, it’s often because they believe they have a dispute in liability or your damages are weak. They will defend their client if they believe the plaintiff is wrong, which raises the risks for you. Every car accident is different, as is every outcome. FUN FACTS ABOUT THE MONTH OF JULY

Most Americans associate July with Independence Day and everything the holiday entails, including traditional barbecue cuisine, fireworks, and summer vacations. However, in addition to the Fourth of July, this midsummer month has a rich history and offers fun opportunities for everyone to celebrate. ‘What’s in a Name?’ You’ve likely heard of Julius Caesar, the famous Roman dictator and general known for changing the Roman Empire’s political structure, innovating war tactics, and eventually dying after a legendary assassination. But did you know that July, Caesar’s birth month, wasn’t always called that? It was initially named Quintilis, which means “fifth” in Latin, because it was the fifth month of the ancient Roman calendar. Shortly after Caesar’s death, the month of Quintilis was renamed July in his honor. Of course, Caesar’s legacy didn’t end there. Before he died, he implemented the Julian calendar, which he based off of the Egyptian solar calendar, and it remained in place for over 1,500 years until the Gregorian calendar was introduced in the 16th century. Red, White, and Who? Similar to the Declaration of Independence for the U.S., Canada’s Constitution Act of 1867, signed on July 1 of that year, marks the birth of Canada. The following year, Charles Monck, the 4th Viscount Monck and Canada’s first governor-general, signed a proclamation requesting that everyone in Canada celebrate their country’s independence on July 1.

However, it wasn’t until 100 years later that the date officially became Canada Day. Most celebrations include fireworks and red and white attire, much like how Americans celebrate the Fourth of July. Got Wings? While chicken wings are a staple of Southern dining, they actually originated in upstate New York. In 1964, Teressa Bellissimo, co-owner of the Anchor Bar, started cooking leftover wings dipped in hot sauce for her son and his friends. After receiving enthusiastic feedback, Bellissimo put them on the menu. Over the next few years, the recipe’s popularity spread, and in 1977, former Buffalo mayor Stan Makowski declared July 29 to be National Chicken Wing Day. The reputation of the famous Buffalo wings continued to spread nationwide, and in the early ‘90s, wings became an international hit when McDonald’s, KFC, and Domino’s Pizza began selling them in the variety of flavors we know and love today.
