ET MAGAZINE - MARCH 2022

Prior to the pandemic, hundreds of thousands of American college-students would venture from their home institution to study abroad for a summer term, academic semester, or full year. Even now, roughly 162,000 Americans are enrolled in an abroad pro- gram, eagerly seeking out a varied learning experi- ence, (www.nafsa.org/policy-and-advocacy/policy-re- sources/trends-us-study-abroad). After getting accepted in, packing is the next major hurdle between you and your new destination. For those interested in a program, this is the packing guide for you! Space is limited when you have just two suitcases, a duf fl e bag, and a backpack to move your entire closet across an ocean or two. Before packing your bags, make a list of appropriate clothing for the climate you’ll be living in. If you’re moving to the UK, a sturdy pair of rain-boots, reliable raincoat, and a few thick sweaters will be necessary. Conversely, a term in Brazil will call for light linens and cotton, shorts, and smart sneakers. Weather should be a signi fi cant factor in what you pack; carefully consider the high and low temperatures for the months you’ll be living there. If you think you’ll need a coat, wear one on the plane, this way you don’t eat up space when packing. Wear- ing your coat will keep you warm on usually cold planes. If you’re headed for a northern European coun-

try, consider a stylish wool-blend trench coat or a pop- ular puffer jacket.

Shoes are a girl’s best friend and essential to keeping your feet, knees, and back happy when strolling the streets of a new city. However, their bulk and weight makes packing them a trial. Keep this in mind – less is more when it comes to packing shoes. Many pro- grams host fancy dinners and events for their abroad students, so make sure when you pack a cute pair of heels for going out, they can double as work appro- priate attire. If it’s cool enough where you are, consider a trendy pair of boots. Boots are versatile; low or high, they can pull most out fi ts together. If you have a pres- entation in class or are going out to dinner with your friends, this pair should work for both. Black boots are more sleek and a bit edgier, while brown leather can provide a casual, down-to-earth look. No matter where you are headed, a cushy pair of sneakers is a must. Invest in sneakers that will keep your feet com- fortable no matter how long you’re on cobblestone or concrete streets. Do not pack too many pairs of pajamas. Three or four cozy sweatpants, a few soft tops and sweatshirts should suf fi ce. Pajamas are often thick and fuzzy, tak- ing up excessive space in your suitcase. When picking out your sweats, pack a pair that supports your home university’s logo. At some point in the semester, you’ll miss your old campus. Make sure you fi ll your bags with clothing you love and know you’ll wear. You don’t want to spend money buying a whole new closet once you land, and you certainly don’t want to bring home twice as many clothes. Pack true to you, and enjoy your time abroad!

As someone that frequents La Piazza countless times over the last 20 years, I can confidently say, that I did not have to make a special trip to create an accurate food review. Consistency is what has made them who they are and for me, this is key. From the simplest of dishes to the complex, preparation and presentation is always the same and that’s a good thing. The dining room is warm and inviting with booths that line its perimeter. Plenty of nooks, which is kind of nice, especially when you are looking for a more intimate setting. I’ve had just about everything on the menu, but I will limit this review to my absolute favorites. CALAMARI ARRABBIATA; delicious morsels of cala- mari are amidst flame roasted peppers, in a spicy Arrab- biata sauce. An addiction I can not control. EGGPLANT MEATBALLS; you’d never know unless I told you, but these homemade creations of eggplant in a tomato basil sauce, pecorino cheese with fresh whipped ricotta taste just like beef. They are my guiltless pleasure. Fantastico! LEMON SOLE MEUNIERE; A Pan-seared Lemon Sole, with capers and asparagus in a white wine and lemon Beurre Blanc sauce. It’s my favorite seafood dish. Com- plimented with rice pilaf makes for an elegant presenta- tion that is both delicate, and full of flavor. Delicious!

CHICKEN CHOP PARMIGIANA; An encrusted parmesan cheese and french boned chicken breast is then pan fried, then baked with mozzarella in an “OldWorld” Italian tomato sauce. Served with a side of penne makes for a generous portion. Just like Nonna used to make. If you know anything about beef, then you must try their BISTRO BURGER; a Pat Lafrieda 8oz patty, aged Wisconsin cheddar, Applewood bacon, shredded lettuce, beefsteak tomatoes, red onion on a brioche bun stands up to the best specialty burger joints I’ve ever been to. As these are just a few of my besties to consider, from apps to dessert you will not be disappointed. There is a private party room that accommodates up to 50 people. With party season on the horizon, now would be a good time to plan ahead and make those inquiries. Customize a special party menu to suit. Their professional catering staff will help you plan your event from start to finish. If you are having a special occasion at home, let La Piazza handle all the details.Their off premises catering menu will deliver the same con- sistent quality you’ve come to expect. La Piazza’s Pronto menu for Take-Out and Delivery offers even more options. At first glance, you wouldn’t think pizza at La Piazza.Think again. Their brick oven artisanal pies are sensational, including their gluten free and cauliflower pies. After a tough day at work, stop by Monday though Friday between 4:30 and 7:00 for their popular happy hour. Beer, wine and cocktails are dis- counted, with apps at 1/2 price. Monday’s, come in for dinner and get bottles of wine at 1/2 price on purchases of $50 all day La Piazza of Melville is the embodiment of the finest ingredients, skillfully prepared and delivered by a staff that exemplifies a passion that comes through with every meal they present.

boiled eggs too, making it fast and easy for the commuter on the run. A vast counter with about 8-10 self serve coffees and teas have been designed to get you in and out quickly. Beyond the glass showcase are sumptuous gourmet salads. Unlike traditional deli fare, you’ll fi nd at least two kinds of chicken, tuna and egg salad, that can be made into a sammy or simply purchased by the pound. Match this up with over a dozen speciality side salads and you’ll soon realize the distinct difference of the all new Princess Deli and Bagels. Gourmet salads, signature wraps and heros round out the menu, with an alluring selection of fresh breads and homemade cakes, cookies and muf fi ns too. Here’s the big bonus. The new owners come with decades of experience as professional caterers. It’s something they take great pride in. Before you know it, the trees will be in bloom, the grass will be green and it will be time to start thinking about family gatherings and special occasions for backyard parties. Pick up one of the catering menus too and see the possibilities on how they can make your next party plan a great success. By now, you should be curious enough to stop in and see the all new Princess Deli and Bagels. You’ll be impressed with it’s brand new look, welcoming and friendly staff, and beautiful display of all kinds of fresh goodies. Please join me in welcoming the all new Princess Deli and Bagels to our neighborhood.

In case you have not noticed, Princess Deli of Commack has been completely rebuilt from the ground up. As someone that once frequent the Princess years ago, it was exciting to see its transformation from the former. From it’s tired and worn down appearance, the new proprietors pumped new life into this 50 year old landmark. A complete make over includes white tiled walls, lined with granite counters and with all new stainless steel equipment demonstrates that these guys are serious operators. Once entering, it will be evident this is just the beginning of what you can expect from behind the counter. First, for the bagel a fi cionado, I’ve got great news. The all new Princess Deli is more of a hybrid establishment. You can expect to get really good delicatessen style food combined with the comfort of a warm bagel and a schmear. For those less familiar, a schmear is a generous slathering of cream cheese on a bagel. With its Eastern European origins, the word was derived from the words spread or smear. Unlike traditional deli’s, you can get up to 10 different fl avors of cream cheese, complimented by a wide assortment of bagels too. Several other notable bagel identities can be found, like getting fresh smoked salmon or white fi sh But, this is just the beginning of the new Princess Deli and Bagel story. As you enter, you’ll fi nd plenty of grab and go goodies, like fresh made salads, wraps, yogurt parfaits and hard

I t should be evident that the post pandemic era has crushed local busi- nesses all across our beautiful is- land. Combined with the onslaught of E-commerce, the Mom and Pop shops that built our communities, continue to be challenged. Thank goodness, there is a shimmering light, as many continue to muster up the strength to keep fighting for their place in local markets. Selmer’s Petland has been Long Is- land’s favorite pet destination for eighty-two years, making them the oldest family-owned of its kind in the U.S. It all began when Bruno and Helen Selmer moved to Huntington, into a small house on two-lane, Jericho Turnpike. In 1941, Bruno decided to enclose the front porch of their home and start selling a small selection of pets and supplies. He even renovated the garage and created a space for breeding dogs and birds too. Today, owner Al Selmer (son of Bruno and Helen), along with his daughter Jessica, take pride in carry- ing the traditions of this successful family-owned business. “As the head- quarters for all things pet-related, we enjoy serving and meeting the needs of our customers. Our three floors are fully stocked with merchandise that is designed to meet the demand of both our live-stock and supplies,” says Al. Selmer’s has a wide selection of American Kennel Club, American Ca- nine Association as well as designer crossbreeds, all of which come from le- gitimate breeders. You can be assured that the staff at Selmer’s has been pro- fessionally trained in pet socialization and provide daily exercise routines to keep their pets in excellent health.

are coming in to add a new member to your family, or visiting to shop for food and supplies, the friendly and knowl- edgeable staff at Selmer’s is eager to please. From the finest birds, fish, puppies, reptiles, and small animals to the best grooming services, supplies and more, Selmer’s will not disappoint. HERE’S WHAT SOME OF SELMERS CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN SAYING… Lori D HHHHH Jessica is amazing and so caring. We bought our Daisy who is a full breed Shih Tzu at 4 months old and she has a beautiful disposition and loves other dogs and people in general. I highly recommend Selmers. Nov. 22, 2021 Frank L HHHHH This is the 3rd dog that we have purchased from Selmer's. I can't begin to tell you how happy we were each time. Our experience just keeps getting better and better. Would not go anywhere else. Jessica's ability to pair a dog with an owner is uncanny. The staff also could not be more helpful. Sept. 29, 2021 Alissa HHHHH I hit GOLD. My puppy is beyond amazing. Her temperament is amazing! She is sweet, loving, playful but also chill! She is almost 8 months now and she is the little love of my puppy life!) Thank you for this wonderful dog. We love her so darn much! Sept. 24, 2021

This includes grooming and health checks to ensure the well-being of all dogs. To be sure you get your new puppy off on the right track, Selmer’s partners with licensed veterinarians and offers full packages to make cer- tain that your puppy gets the proper care from the very beginning. As Jessica, owner of Selmer’s ex- plains it, “It’s not about selling pup- pies. Its more about matching the right person or family with our pup- pies, while providing a life experience that will make the new owners and puppy thrive in their new environ- ment”. After 80 years of serving cus- tomers in Nassau and Suffolk County, Selmer’s has become the most trusted source in the business. Whether you

If we let our personal reserves run dry, we will have nothing left worth offering.

People often confuse self-care and compassion, with being selfish or self-absorbed. It may even be considered morally “wrong”. However, it is important to know your own worth – emotionally and physically. As people, we, too, need the very same love and affection, care and concern, we are taught to give to others. It is truly essential to not only our own well-being, but to the well- being of everyone we love and care about! In order to keep the proverbial well from running dry, we need to be mindful of our limitations, expectations and boundaries. We need to include ourselves when thinking about, planning for and providing sensitivity, understanding, forgiveness, insight and advice. We also need to be gentle on ourselves and less judgmental, just as we would hope to be for anyone we are engaging with, on a personal and emotional level. In receiving compassion from ourselves, we are better equipped to impart it on others, and as such, we help make this world a better, gentler and kinder place for all!

We hear so much about the importance of offering compassion to others and often strive to be kind, empathetic and forgiving. We are taught that by acting this way, we not only help others, but recognize the characteristics that make us a good person. All of this may, indeed, be true, but have you remembered to factor yourself into this equation? If not, why not now? Now, is always a good time to start anything worthwhile! Kelly Rae Roberts, a former medical social worker, turned artist and entrepreneur extraordinaire, states that, “Self compassion changes everything.” She is most definitely correct in her assertion. In order for us to give freely and fully to others, we must first be prepared to do the same for ourselves. If we let our personal reserves run dry, we will have nothing left worth offering. The first step is to truly understand and embrace this concept, and realize that it is not selfish to consider oneself when offering this gift.

St. Patrick’s Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. I’mnot sure if it’s because I grew up with a cheerful Irish mom, or the fact that I enjoy a nice pint with friends – but for me, it’s cer- tainly one of the most festive days in spring. If I’m not going into Manhat- tan or driving out to Montauk, I gener- ally try to stay close to home and fi nd a good pub. Enjoy some traditional grub with family and friends, a pint of Guinness and hopefully listen to some quality live music. As a Northport Village resident, I’m partial to Main Street Café . There’s something about the ambiance that re- minds me of time spent in Dublin, and driving through southern Ireland. It’s quaint, old school and fi lled with locals – all things I appreciate in a respectable bar.. Another plus? The bartenders have been there for years, and they remem- ber your name. The owner Darin is dar- ling, and always welcomes us with open arms and a smile. In addition to a good pour, they also offer a full menu. And let me tell you, the food is good. Really good. If I’m not ordering the special of the day, I’m usually ordering a burger or a salad. (I’m not a fan of salads nor- mally, but the salads at this neighbor- hood joint are incredible!) If it’s your fi rst time going, ask about the bar spe-

cial or special of the day. You won’t be disappointed. For something a bit more rowdy, I opt for Changing Times in East North- port. They keep it simple, which I ap- preciate. Beer, food, no frills. This spot is generally pretty busy, and fi lled with local patrons who are diligently enjoy- ing baskets of wings and cold brews. They also have a long bar with plenty of seats, a full bar menu and plenty of TVs. Some other great spots that may be worth checking out for St. Patrick’s Day are Jackie Reilly's in Bethpage, Paddy’s Loft in Rockville Centre and Reeses 1900 Pub in Patchogue. Most have local, live music and pint specials. If I’mgoing to Reeses, I’m ordering a burger or classic entrée – fi sh, shepherd’s pie or fi sh and chips. If I’m going to Jackie Reilly’s, I’m or- dering the soup, and wings. (I’ve also heard great things about the shepherd’s pie, all of their sandwiches and bangers n’ mash.) At Paddy’s Loft, I opt for the Irish soda bread, soup, and/or pot pie. Whether you plan on staying local, or adventuring to a new spot, I hope you enjoy this St. Patrick’s Day with friends and/or family, over a traditional meal and a perfectly poured pint.

D ental care is one of the most of three, have sustained dental diseases. It’s now commonly acknowledged that dental and oral diseases can be a persistent source of pain and discomfort in a pet’s life. Our pets are masters of hiding their pain, and will typically only show us signs of pain when it is already well out of their control. important aspects of pet health. 75- 85% of dogs and cats over the age

COMMON SIGNS OF DENTAL DISEASES • Bad breath • Difficulty in eating food • Drooling • Pawing the mouth • Swollen face • Refusing to eat food • Yelping while eating food

THE FACTS

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

• Doing nothing for your pet’s oral care is not an option • Tooth brushing is the gold standard to preventing accumulation of plaque and tartar • Hard food is helpful, but alone cannot prevent plaque and tartar formation • Dental chews work mechanically to control dental diseases, and may be helpful in conjunction with regular dental care

• Dental diseases are always progressive, and can lead to gingivitis, periodontal disease, and ultimately tooth loss • Adequate oral and dental care for our pets is solely dependent upon us • Infrequently brushing teeth, for example, only during grooming appointments, can create a false impression of pet oral care • Dental fractures are common due to chewing on raw hide

Dry food is generally better for dental hygiene than wet food. While cleaning teeth with simple gauze is easiest, using a toothbrush is the most effective method. It’s important to start pet dental hygiene practices such as, brushing their teeth at a young age to get them accustomed and comfortable with the

practice. Once a day, every other day, twice a week (or, once a week) - whatever you can do, do it. Many animal hospitals offer free consultation for dental exams, or may offer a discounted visit. Remember, our pet’s dental care is solely up to us.

What makes Your CBD Store different than most? While other companies are focused purely on CBD itself, Your CBD Store takes an innovative approach to hemp and hemp products—by concentrating on the entire profile of the plant. This allows them to develop products directly in response to the consumer experience. For customers at all hesitant about cannabis products, The En- docannabinoid System (ECS) is a group of receptors that makes up a very complex regulatory system throughout the human brain, body, central and peripheral nervous systems. Phytocompounds found in hemp help maintain the body’s internal stability (homeostasis) by adjusting the flow of neurotransmitters and regulating bodily functions such as appetite, sleep, emotion and movement. Your CBD Store, (awarded USA CBD Expo 2019, and Best CBD Tincure) has everything from Oil Tinctures, Water Solubles and Whole Plant Products, to Gummies, Edibles, Skin Care, Pet Products and more – many of which are USDA certified. They carry a Sleep line by SUNMED, and an additional line called TRIM - for customers looking to lose weight. TRIM offers a natural approach, as it features Delta-9-V, (a compound in hemp known to naturally suppress the appetite). Upon exploring Your CBD Store’s large variety of products, you’ll find that many of them are Vegan, Gluten Free, as well as Organic. They offer great flavors such as: Strawberry Lime, Grape, Pina Colada, Peach, Watermelon, and more (depending on the type of product it is you need). All of their hemp-based, transparent products, are also backed by third-party laboratory testing. Within each lab result, customers are shown what is and isn’t detected in each product - how much cannabinoid per serving, total CBD, etc. So, let the friendly and knowledgeable staff assist you in finding what’s right! Commack hours are Monday-Saturday 10-7 and Sunday 10-5. Visit, SunFlora.org to locate the Commack store and get on track to feeling your best!

T he story starts with founder, Rachael Quinn, whose quality of life was affected by Crohn’s disease. For Rachael, CBD was the only remedy that helped her gain quality of life back. After Quinn’s positive experience, she developed the urge to share with others, which led her to open the first Your CBD store in Bradenton, Florida in 2018. Realizing the store’s success, Quinn and her husband (the company’s CEO), founded an innovative product line called SUNMED - made from the highest quality ingredients. With locations all over the United States, each Your CBD Store offers a safe, comfortable, and inviting environment where guests can learn about CBD, try samples, and feel empowered to make an informed decision on the best personalized cannabinoid formulation. Having celebrated the grand opening of their Commack location (in Peppertree Commons) on October 16th, Your CBD Store welcomes you in for all your health and wellness needs! Owners, Patrick Consalvas and Mike Anacone, are a great duo - they listen carefully to every customer and guide them towards the right product. Along with owning Your CBD Store, Patrick and Mike have been partners in multiple small businesses, giving them much experience. “We felt this was a niche because CBD products are very mis- understood and people do not have a place to go to become educated, aside from searching online and hoping a product is of high quality and consistency. Our store is somewhere customers can come to learn about Hemp and CBD and have all their questions answered in a nice environment,” says Patrick.

• Start with patterned carpet or area rugs. • Select paint colors after carpet, furniture, and window treatment fabrics have all been selected. • Use your present furniture as place holders rather than settle for new items with poor quality. • Save money by doing some work yourself. (As long as the final result will look professional.) • Set up major pieces before you shop for the rest. • Start accessorizing with your own things first (collectibles, books, photos, etc.) and then add new items. If renovating is in your plan, start NOW – because the world since the pandemic is filled with delays – in products and materials as well as in labor shortage. Be prepared to wait for what you really want or revise your thinking about the scope or timeline of your project. Whether you’re imagining big or starting small, it’s all in the planning. Do your homework – check out the mind boggling wealth of information literally at your fingertips (just say the magic word “Google”!). However, know that shopping local is often easier, safer, less confusing and ends with better results. Before you make a costly mistake, get advice from the experts to help you make big decisions that will affect what you look at and live with every day. In short, now’s the time to begin! With the changing of the seasons you can make some positive changes in your home – which always brings positive change to those who live there as well.

Dear Readers, In January, you probably made some heartfelt New Year’s resolutions – lose weight, start an exercise program, clean up the clutter and get organized. So, how is that going for you? If you’re like most folks, your good intentions probably are no longer reality. With most of winter behind us, we need to up our game because spring is the season for decorating and renovating. It’s time to get moving, start cleaning up– purging and organizing– so you can make your shopping experience a successful one. BEFORE YOU GO SHOPPING: • Make a “need” list and “wish” list – being realistic with regards to your space and budget availability. • Measure furniture that’s staying and determine what will be purchased. • Prepare your floor plan to take with you, but be flexible in making changes as you shop. • Check out potential sources through newspapers, magazines, internet, etc. Hint: Designers take all applicable samples along with floor plans and pictures as they make their selections in the field, and you should too. TIPS FOR SUCCESS: • Choose colors for the long haul and not the “flavor of the month”.

listed by a real estate agency many years back. Once they got my listing, I never heard from realtor ever again. All they cared about was getting the listing and let MLS sell the home. Yes, my home eventually sold, but if the listing agent would have made the effort, chances are it would have sold a price more in my favor. How frustrating that can be. If you are selling a home, rest assured that Angel Chizzoniti will do everything she can to get your home sold quickly and at the right price. “In terms of collaborating with buyers, I realize their time is valuable,” says Angel. Understanding market trends with an in-depth knowledge of several neighborhoods throughout Long Island seems to give me the edge. Angel Chizzoniti continues, “I have learned to genuinely understand people and their needs. When I first meet with a client, I ask a lot of questions, that enables me to develop a profile on what they want. I can then establish a game plan with my buyers and work efficiently to meet their objective.” If you are buying or selling a home in the fast- developing area of Farmingdale, then Angel Chizzoniti is someone to consider. She has been a resident of the area for close to 40 years and is more than qualified to help you find the best location and value for your investment. Collaborating with Angel Chizzoniti, backed by the resources of Douglas Elliman, makes for a winning combination.

W ith a myriad of real estate agents to choose from, buying or selling a home can be a daunting task. Knowing that it is the most important purchasing decision we make in our lifetime, many factors must be considered. Market knowledge, strong negotiating ability with excellent time management skills must be present. The one virtue that seems to be overlooked, is the passion that the sales agent puts into the job. A realtor’s genuine desire to please the buyer or seller rates on the top of my list. It is this emotional intelligence skill set that has enabled Angel Chizzoniti of Douglas Elliman to stand out amongst the agents she competes up against every single day. As Angel explains it, “I truly put my heart and soul into every customer that I have the privilege to represent. Buying or selling a home is an emotional event. Therefore, it is my job to deliver on what my agency promises. Real estate is a critical step in someone’s life and is my responsibility to do everything I can to help.” As someone that has purchased several properties over my lifetime, I can appreciate this level of service and diligence. I once had my home
