By Shannon Riley, PT, DPT, Assistant Clinic Director, Excel Physical Therapy — Newton

Other obstacles that may be holding your patients back are old injuries and chronic conditions. Our team of licensed physical therapists can keep you healthy, prevent injuries, and create treatment plans to get you back on course. If your patients want to take steps towards a healthier lifestyle, refer them to Excel Physical Therapy today! We can heal any old injuries preventing them from getting active and help them carve the way towards a life full of physical activity. Couch To 5k Running Programs Are you familiar with Couch to 5k Programs? These programs are an excellent way to leave behind a sedentary lifestyle and start getting active. The typical Couch to 5k running plan takes you from running 0 to 5K (3.1 miles) in a set amount of time. During this program, you will be running 3 times per week with rest days in between. The length of the program will depend on your baseline fitness level but will likely span from 4 to 9 weeks. Interval training is commonly used in these programs. This involves a run/walk method, which allows you to train for longer than if you ran continuously.

Walking breaks allow your body to rest and recover. By changing your pace, you force your body to adapt to different speeds, and your heart and lungs must adapt to different levels of strenuous activity. Couch to 5K training gradually increases the amount of time you spend running and decreases your walking time until you can run a 5K without stopping. At Excel Physical Therapy, we can help guide patients through this program and equip themwith the necessary tools to maintain activity levels and prevent injuries. Treating Common Runner's Injuries Physical therapy is an excellent resource for runners looking to resolve their pain. Our team will focus on addressing the cause of the pain rather than simply attempting to hide the symptoms. Working with our highly trained physical therapists will help patients improve their range of motion, restore strength to muscles in the lower back, and reduce tension in the muscles through targetedmanual therapies. At a patient's initial assessment, their physical therapist will take a thorough history and perform a physical exam. This involves taking a patient through a range of motion and strength screening. They will also be given a series of tests, including a gait assessment and functional movements that help us classify a patient's condition and determine the most effective treatment options to help them run pain-free. Refer Your Patients To Excel Physical Therapy Today! Are acute or nagging injuries preventing your patients from reaching their fitness goals? If this is the case, refer them to our clinic for relief! We offer a wide variety of therapeutic modalities to help your patients get running again!

Patient Success Spotlight

“This place is Ah-mazing.”

“This place is Ah-mazing. Everyone who works there is super friendly, but most importantly know exactly what they should be doing to make you get better. I have had 2 PTs from this practice and both have been unbelievable. They were/have been eager to help me get better and researched what other exercises could possibly help me. Cory is beyond knowledgeable, is super positive and makes all of his different patients super comfortable with him. I feel like I am a part of the Excel family when I walk in. Everyone greets me and asks me how I’m doing. You can tell that the therapists like their workplace. You can’t beat that. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. I always hear my friends that go elsewhere complain about not having as much success as myself and everyone that I see at Excel. Keep doing what you’re doing, Excel Family!” – Excel Physical Therapy patient
