Introduction to Emergency Medicine: Life in the Emergency Department

Clinical Skills: Differential Diagnosis Hone your critical thinking and complex problem solving skills in order to make the right medical decisions. Keynote: The Work of the Trauma Surgeon Dr. Kenneth Wilson of the University of Chicago and former Deputy Clinical Commander in a combat support hospital in Afghanistan. Emergency Department Simulation Work with your clinical team to treat a trauma patient while you race against the clock. Ethics of Emergency Room Care Every doctor takes an oath to uphold ethical principles and to “first, do no harm,” but does this always happen in the quick-moving world of the emergency department? Panel Discussion: Emergency Medicine Hear from physicians, surgeons, nurses, residents, and medical students about their work in the fast-paced world of emergency medicine.

MEDICAL ROTATIONS 2-Week Concentration at EXPLO Chicago Concentrations feature a rotating mix of on-campus work and field visits. Here’s what a typical day in the field could look like.

SAMPLE SCHEDULE FIELD DAY

Breakfast

Medical School + Cadaver Lab Visit Tour a medical school and meet current students, residents, and instructors. Learn all about the journey through medical school, from engaging classroom instruction and hands-on lab work, to clinical interactions with real patients. Surgical Observation Step inside inside an operating theater to view a live surgery. Beforehand, learn about the patient’s chief complaint and preoperative preparations of both patient and surgeon. Afterwards, debrief the surgery and develop a follow-up care plan to get your patient back on their feet. Simulator Site Visit Working in a medical school state-of-the-art simulator — designed to replicate all aspects of an urban emergency department of a major hospital — students will be run through the paces of triaging and treating multiple patients with a wide array of conditions. Panel Discussion: Emergency Medicine Hear from physicians, surgeons, nurses, residents, and medical students about their work in the fast-paced world of emergency medicine.
