CLIPPINGS AND MUSINGS NOVEMBER 2020 – HELEN DUVAL
As we head towards the end of the year there are some positive news stories to consider. The first and only expo of the fenestration sector of the year in the UK has been launched; there is hope of a new vaccine for Covid-19, “wildbelts” could become part of planning strategy and whilst average house prices are expected to increase 4% before stagnating in 2021, currently the housing market and new builds look more buoyant than previously expected. This sector has a strong track record of bouncing back from shocks and knocks. Businesses are currently evaluating their profits and their margins, and how best to tackle the continuing effect of Coronavirus. Home-working has been accepted as being quite successful, but as social beasts, there is a need to interact. So in a lockdown, where better to do that than via a virtual expo? It is inevitable that things will take time to return to how they were pre-vaccine, (if it is just around the corner), but how quickly this happens is anyone’s guess. We can’t wait if we want to keep the wheels of industry turning. Staying sensible and sticking to it has to be the answer. Cities are adapting and being able to travel on public transport will continue to be impacted. We have to learn from this disease and develop ways to adapt, invest and build on the future we have available to us. Currently, commercial property values are holding very well, with a strong potential in relation to investment. Refurbishment opportunities are picking up in this sector of the market. Technology, performance, trends, culture and art influence many aspects of the glazing industry with design remaining a focal aspect. Whether a modern,
new-build or the redevelopment of a listed property modern design and manufacturing methods are playing their part and it matters. At the moment, the fenestration landscape is evolving and trying to keep pace with social media. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or Snapchat are now the forces shaping our business awareness, alongside the new kid on the block - Tik Tok. It does give all of us more control over what we are saying or when we are achieving successes. Commercial design faces new challenges as well as rewards, when it comes to making a statement. Whether it is a striking engineering project, new skyscraper or the redevelopment of a hotel spa chain design remains a fundamental aspect for the sector as it must accommodate the expectations of modern travellers, . It needs to be new and must be dynamic in novel ways. Architects and interior designers continue to be challenged to create looks that address our modern desire to own something superb. Equally, there is a desire to create something new that offers a feeling of security and familiarity – in simple terms, …comfort and luxury. Buildings must answer the need of longing for the best of the past, while combining that with a desire to sample something vital and new. Online information is swift and for some it is a terrifying prospect to have to face – it is a change considered too fast and too difficult to grasp when being adapted for established industries. For architects and designers they now have so much at their disposal that can be drawn upon in terms of research, art forms and cultural elements, that all are relevant in modern building concepts.

Fenestration Awards. This year, the digital experience is about to be enhanced, with the good and the great of the industry still able to join together to celebrate innovation in industry technology, engineering and design. The NFA Awards recognize national achievement and industry projects across many categories, with some additional focus placed on training initiatives, digital specialists and young achievers. Additionally, the Awards acknowledge consistent quality and business accomplishments or achievements beyond regular job requirements. The winning announcements this year will take place during the FENEX EXPO on 26th and 27th November. So stay tuned to the social feeds, YouTube and periscope - it’s all very exciting!
Manufacturers have to keep pace. The next generation has never been without technology and they harness it in ways that we must learn if we are to survive in any brave new world. Style, product innovation and performance dynamics will influence investment and must be readily available on the internet to view– so, even if a retro design is required, whether it is acoustic glazing for a trendy workout space, the window Pantone color chart for 2016, or a charitable cause that a product manufacturer or firm of architects is keen to support - it all has bearing for the sector and needs to be a part of the manufacturers online conversation today. Why? - because we must cater for tomorrow’s market. Carrying on with a theme and in recognition of innovation, the Award season is here and is about to get very interesting.
Online, there is a great, familiar buzz across the glass and glazing sector regarding the National

WE’VE BEEN RAISING SMILES FOR CHILDREN AT CHRISTMAS
With children always at the heart of our Christmas Charity events, this year Lee Clarke has been working closely with Ian Short, managing director at Morley Glass in a bid to add some Christmas sparkle for those less fortunate than others. For children who will be unable to celebrate with their families at home this year due to hospitalisation, once again Lee will be making gift donations, to help raise a few smiles.
With the festive season almost upon us Lee has been raising
Based in Leeds, improving lives is the main aim of the charity whilst offering a safe en-vironment for all the community. Recreation, education and leisure time activities are a focus, giving children, and young people the chance to make healthy life choices. Jason Grafton Holt, concluded, “As a team, we all have children of varying ages, so we wanted to give our support to help raise the spirits of those who will not be able to enjoy their best Christmas this year. It is always deeply humbling and extremely re-warding to support children and young adults in a bid to give them a better start to the next year.”
funds for Variety Chil-dren’s Charity and CATCH , both of which aim to provide children with better access to greater opportunities in life. Working alongside Ian on some fundraising events, Lee commented that he was de-lighted at being able to bring a little happiness at a difficult time for some families. He comments further, “This year perhaps more so than others, it will be particularly hard for many children. Although at some time or another, we all have to face some serious issues, when children are affected it is awful to see. I for one cannot sit back, so I hope that the support given this year will really help the children as we move into 2021.” CATCH aims to work together with people from all ages and backgrounds in a bid to provide them with goals, opportunities and ‘positive alternatives’.

The announcement was made on the FENEX YouTube channel, with a superb video produced by Team4 Marketing which was set to premiere at 8pm on Monday evening. There was a high number of people waiting to watch as the video streamed live. In almost perfect choreography, the winners were announced in tandem with the winners video. It resulted in an event that was a first for the fenestration industry and created huge hype and impact that evening and the following morning. Speaking about the results and the event, co-founder Jason Grafton-Holt said: “this was a unique event for the industry, something that we believe had never been done before and it created such a positive and widespread impact that is still rippling through the sector. In what has been such a tough year for everyone, with almost everything cancelled or postponed, it was a genuine privilege to be able to bring our industry the highlight of the year. It was fantastic to see the industry get behind the NFAs and the goodwill and energy shown on social media during and after the event was something special. What a great early Christmas present for so many great people and companies!”
The NFAs have announced that there will be a winners event in 2021 to celebrate the success of the 2020 campaign. The format and timings of the event will be confirmed once more clarity around the pandemic is available. The awards, however, promise that this will be the party of the year for the entire industry and more information will be teased soon.
Details on when the 2021 campaign will begin are due to be announced soon.

AWARD HAT-TRICK FOR MORLEY GLASS & GLAZING
Morley Glass & Glazing is celebrating having achieved three first-place finishes at the 2020 National Fenestration Awards. The integral blinds manufacturer came out on top in all three categories it was nominated in: Integral Blinds Company, Best Use of Video and IGU Manufacturer, which it shared jointly with Clayton Glass. It is the business’s fourth consecutive year taking home the IGU Manufacturer prize, and third time as winner of the Integral Blinds Company category. The business was also one of three companies named a COVID Hero by the awards, as acknowledgement of their investment in virtual showrooms for installers during and after the national lockdown. Finally, Morley Glass received a Special Mention for its tireless charity work for local causes throughout 2020. The open platform NFAs are the fenestration industry’s fastest-growing independent awards and are unique as winners are decided completely by the public. Organisers of the awards have revealed that 7,658 individual votes were registered for 163 finalists between 18th September and 24th November, the most ever recorded in their seven- year history.
The winners’ announcement was made via the FENEX YouTube channel on Monday 7th December, after plans to announce winners at the doors, windows and hardware exhibition could no longer go ahead. Ian Short, managing director at Morley Glass & Glazing comments: “These awards are a fantastic way to bring a turbulent year for the industry to a close. Despite the obvious challenges, 2020 has seen our manufacturing capacity increase from an average of 2,400 to 3,500 integral blinds a week and our turnover has grown to reflect this. Our success is a real team effort and we’re very proud and grateful of the excellent supply chain we have behind us. “This year we have also taken the time to invest in our Morley Glass & Glazing YouTube channel, with the help of video marketing specialist Video Production 4, so winning the award for Best Use of Video was a great recognition of all our hard work.” All the winners in the 25 unique categories and two specialist categories in the National Fenestration Awards will be invited to a special Winners Event held by the award organisers in the New Year.
