ONE LUCKY BROTHER

Celebrating Siblings Day

Siblings Day was never a holiday I was aware of growing up, but thanks to social media, I see it getting far more attention these days. I think it’s great to see people sharing their appreciation for their brothers and sisters; it’s something people so often forget to do. So, in honor of the April 10 holiday, I wanted to share my own appreciation for my brother, Chip. Chip may just be the luckiest person I’ve ever met. He always manages to meet the most interesting people in the strangest of circumstances. Once, he wound up in a golf game with Michael Jordan, and that’s not even the craziest part. Jordan wound up giving my brother some shoes after the two commiserated over the challenges of finding pairs that fit them! From befriending owners of luxury restaurants to getting a picture with 50 Cent, my brother has many stories to tell. And while there’s no question Chip has a charmed life, he deserves a lot of the credit for making the most of these incredible run-ins. In fact, in a very real way, Chip makes his own luck. My brother has always been “Mr. Personality.” Even when we were young, he didn’t have a problem immediately ingratiating himself to new people. I swear he’s never met a stranger. But, while the number of amazing people he’s befriended — thanks to these social skills — is impressive, that’s not why I consider myself lucky to call Chip my brother. We were born four years apart, and I can still remember the night our parents brought Chip home from the hospital. We grew close, but like all siblings, we had our tussles. “Chip! Heather! Stop!” was a very common phrase for my grandma, especially when we were in the back seat together. Still, even when we argued, Chip and I were always tight. We always knew we had each other’s backs. He covered for me

during my mischievous early years, and I’ll always be grateful.

I’m glad we’ve remained so close over the years — we still talk almost every day. What’s even better is that all our kids get along great! His daughters are around the same age as my oldest, and he and his wife just had a baby boy! My son is especially excited to finally have another boy, and someone younger than him, in the bunch. Whether they’re older or younger than you, siblings can be such a great influence. Chip’s shown me the real value of being outgoing and open to new experiences, and I’m lucky to have him as a brother.

1. MIND YOUR OWN BEESWAX. Lip balm is a must, and not just for soothing chapped lips. Ensuring your lips stay moisturized will keep them healthy and prevent chapped, split lips. But before you apply the lip balm that’s been collecting dust on your dresser, check the ingredients. A good balm will have a base of beeswax, paraffin, and/or petroleum jelly. These lock in moisture and don’t evaporate as quickly. When shopping for lip balm, avoid harmful ingredients. Salicylic acid, menthol, camphor, and silicone can dry out your lips, and while it’s fun when your lips taste like cherry, stay away from flavored balms. These can actually lead to chapped lips. 2. MAKE TIME TO EXFOLIATE. You know how your shower loofah sloughs away dead skin cells, keeping your skin soft and healthy? Your lips are also covered in dead skin cells that need to be gently removed. Don’t worry, you don’t have to buy a tiny loofah. Instead, whip up a DIY scrub to exfoliate your lips. Just mix 1 part honey with 2 parts sugar. Once a week, massage the scrub gently into your lips, let sit for 10 minutes, then remove with a gentle face wash. Regular exfoliation keeps your lips soft and smooth. 3. DON’T FORGET YOUR SUNSCREEN. Research from George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., found that the No. 1 area people forget to apply sunscreen is the lips. We tend to forget that our lips are part of our skin, which is troubling because skin cancer around the lips can be very dangerous. If you’re going outside, be sure to protect your lips with lip balm containing SPF protection of 30 or higher.

3 Tips for Healthy Lips

The eyes may be the windows to the soul, but your lips let people know how you really feel. A smile and a laugh invite warm conversation, whereas a sharp frown lets people know it’s not a good time to chat. Your lips do a lot of work, so make sure you’re taking care of them! Here are three rules to follow when it comes to maintaining good lip health.

FIND THE RIGHT SUPPORT What to Look for When Seeking Comfort On top of the stress, confusion, and heartache, divorce is often incredibly isolating. Even when you have friends and family close at hand, it’s not always easy to talk to them about what you’re going through, and if you do, you may not always get the best support. But make no mistake, reaching out and finding someone to listen to you and commiserate with you can be one of the healthiest things you do for yourself during a divorce. It’s all about finding the right kind of listener. UNDERSTANDING, NOT JUDGMENT Sadly, some friends or family might make the mistake of thinking they have to “fix” your situation. If someone continually prescribes you advice you didn’t ask for, shames you for your decisions, or keeps trying to find solutions for you rather than just listening to what you have to say, you may need to ask them to stop or spend time with someone more supportive. This sort of behavior may make them feel like they are doing something for you, but it doesn’t respect you, your feelings, or your needs. THE POWER OF EMPATHY Often, some of the most supportive people you can talk to at this time are those who have been through divorce themselves. Having people to talk to who have faced many of the same emotional, logistical, and physical challenges you have can be a great comfort. If you don’t have loved ones with similar experiences, there are support groups out there that can offer a perfect avenue to express your feelings. 2 Florida Women’s Law Group | 904-549-6553

INDIRECT SUPPORT Of course, not all social support has to involve delving into your feelings. Often, just having those friends who can take you out for a night on the town or a cup of coffee can be a blessing. Being able to get out of your own head and just enjoy life is a great way to step out of the gloom and shake off the stresses in your life. Sometimes you have to reach out to friends about setting up these outings — they may be trying to give you time to yourself, so make sure you signal that you want to socialize.

she’s also spent the vast majority of that time working exclusively within family law. As important as this legal experience is to us, what was perhaps the most impressive part of Andrea’s resume is the reason why she dedicated herself to representing people going through divorce. “My first job was with a boutique law firm with a balance of different fields,” Andrea remembers. Having a variety of cases to work on, from family law to contract law, let her narrow down what she wanted to do as a lawyer. As Andrea puts it, “I came to find that working with people rather than corporations was just more rewarding. […] I could be more effective in making a difference.” It was Andrea’s appreciation for person- to-person interaction that actually brought her to our firm in August 2019. “After law school, I’d been living in Miami, but in 2018, I decided I wanted to move somewhere with the same benefits of that city without the

fast pace.” It was after this move that she discovered our firm. “What brought me to this firm was the message,” Andrea explains. “A group of women that came together from different backgrounds to advocate for women, helping them feel good about themselves and empowered during a very difficult time.” “It’s been a great, unique experience so far,” Andrea says of her time as a member of the Florida Women’s Law Group. “The combination of experience between all four attorneys in the office is something we can really draw on.” She adds, “We’re able to put our heads together and think outside the box better than a one-lawyer firm.” Andrea’s willingness to collaborate and compassion for her clients has made her a pillar of our legal team. In many ways, it’s hard to believe she hasn’t been a part of the firm from the beginning.

As one of the newest attorneys to join our team, Andrea Lehner has all the qualities we were looking for. Not only does she have over six years of experience as a lawyer, but

Thanks, Andrea!

Top Mental Strategies for Your Fitness Routine

FINDINGMOTIVATION ON THOSE TOUGH DAYS Top Mental Strategies for Your Fitness Routine

Whether your New Year’s workout routine is finally embedded in your schedule or you’re still trying to make it happen, always remember that your mind is just as important as your body. On some days, you may feel like anything is possible, and on others, it may feel impossible to even get out of bed. Don’t worry, that’s totally normal! There’s no reason to feel ashamed if you’re struggling with gaining steam and motivation for your workout. Here are some mental strategies to help you get firmly into your routine this year and the years to come. GETTING TO THE GYM What’s the hardest part of working out? For most people, it’s not the heavy weights or the long cardio sessions — it’s actually stepping into the gym. Sometimes, people will wake up and think that the gym isn’t possible that day as they lay in bed. Some people will psych themselves out of working out because their time is limited, or they worry about how tired they’ll be after the workout (especially after or before a busy day).

Instead of thinking of reasons you can’t or don’t want to go, focus your mind only on the task of getting there. Stepping into the gym will often give you the mental push to actually work out. It’s also best to leave the all-or-nothing mindset behind — a 45- or 55-minute workout isn’t required every single gym session. Life happens, and even if it’s a short exercise, your workout will actually energize you for the rest of your day. Studies have found that the most successful people share grit: the ability to work hard and endure even the most difficult times. Workouts will burn, and the motions may feel uncomfortable or even painful, so it’s crucial to have the grit to push yourself to the limit. Rather than give up, you should embrace the pain and see it as a sign you’re growing stronger. Adjust your inner vocabulary. Anything that seems “uncomfortable” should be reconsidered as “intense” but something you can work through. Of course, be careful of injury pains! PUSHING YOURSELF TO THE LIMIT
