Consumers Drive Sustainable Packaging
TLMI Addresses Climate Change
For the first time in the association’s history, TLMI has released Position Statements encompassing the areas of Sustainable Consumption and Pro- duction, and Climate Change. Follow- ing the board of directors meeting earlier this year, an official structure and process was put in place to cre- ate and adopt Position Statements on topics the association believes are important to its members. Making A Statement According to the board-approved process, positions adopted by TLMI and statements issued on behalf of the membership must be based on sound scientific knowledge and re- flect the interests of TLMI member- ship as a whole. The Sustainable Consumption and Production Position Statement sum- marizes that the association believes that industries, businesses, and con- sumers must move toward sustain- able patterns of consumption and production. The statement outlines

T he public’s pulse on environmental issues — including the depletion of natural resources and increase in food waste — continues to drive demand for sustainable products, accord- ing to “Global Trends Impacting Packaging Machinery,” a 2018 report from PMMI,TheAssociation for Packaging and Processing
Technologies. As a result, the number of innovative foods that are sustainably sourced and packaged has grown. In addition, heightened corporate social responsibility, firmer regulations and heavier taxes related to the protection of the environment are driving investment in solutions that optimize the use of resources and minimize environmental distress, ac- cording to PMMI’s report. Sustainability is a mainstay today, and it is affecting the supply chain from crop to consumer. Companies today are utilizing their innovative arms to fuel ideas to combat the food waste epidemic and enact sustainable solutions. Consequently, new products are being derived from foods that would otherwise wind up discarded or relegated to scraps. Take for example, the cold-pressed juice Wtrmln Wtr, founded on the premise of creating juice out of watermelon deemed too unattractive for sale as produce.

European Converter Of The Year Award Finalists Revealed Four European label printing/converting companies have been shortlisted for the European Converter of the Year Award, as part of this year’s Label Industry Global Awards. They are: CS Labels, Marzek Etiketten + Packaging GmbH, Reynders, and Stratus Packaging. The European Converter of the Year Award, intro- duced this year to help mark the 40th anniversary of Labelexpo at Labelexpo Europe 2019, recognizes the European label printing/converting company that has stood out over the last year and met a number of criteria. This includes delivering a key innovation or product and technical development; developing pan-European product sales in its chosen market(s); and becoming a global supplier in special or niche areas of operation. The winner, along with the other award category winners, will be announced during the first evening of Labelexpo Europe 2019, September 24, at a 1,000 capacity gala event hosted at Brussels Expo.
The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) has an- nounced that the 2020 Student Flexible Packaging De- sign Challenge, now in its 19th year, is now accepting entries. The Student Design Challenge honors flexible packaging solutions developed by students. The “challenge” for students is to develop a flexible package solution that addresses a packaging issue such as consumer convenience or the protection of food. The package should advance the use of flexible pack- aging; make an improvement over an existing flexible package; convert a non-flexible package into a flexi- ble package; or package a product that is not currently available in flexible packaging. Students are asked to submit a concept outline pri- or to sending in the flexible packaging prototype/ bench sample. The concept outline will be evaluated and when approved, students may then send in their prototype/bench sample. Students may work on the design in conjunction with their packaging schools. FPA members may be available as mentors to students advancing to the flexible packaging prototype/bench sample development round. The deadline to submit a concept outline is Septem- ber 27.The student or team of students who develops

Private Equity Firm Purchases Arjobex
Prudentia Capital, a French private equity firm, has purchased Arjobex from Arjowiggins Group, a manu- facturer of creative and technical papers.Arjobex spe- cializes in the production of synthetic papers used for tags and labels (food, industrial and security applica- tions) sold under the Polyart registered trademark. Arjobex is an international company with $39 mil- lion of sales and 160 employees at three production sites: Rives, France, Clacton-on-Sea, UK and Charlotte, North Carolina. The company addresses the growing synthetic paper market, estimated at $587 million in 2019 and projected to reach $873 million by 2024, which represents an annual growth of 8.3 percent. While food upcycling may be the latest trend, the fact remains that certain food products are only as good their final packages, as the right materials and containers can significantly impact shelf life. Making Improvements There has been an ongoing push to improve sus- tainability across different packaging types, driven throughout the supply chain from consumers and re- tailers onward. This is true for various packaging for- mats, including the plastic used on bottle caps, PET bottles, recycled corrugated used in cartons and cas- es, and recycled HDPE or PET film. Sustainability ini- tiatives have advanced considerably, leading manufac- turers to reduce the package source material through downgauging, creating thinner and lighter packaging while reducing waste. Ultimately, companies must optimize the package to prevent spoilage and avoid adding to the food waste epidemic. Sustainability has a role to play not only as it per- tains to the food and primary package, but also in the secondary package and cartonboard it is shipped in. As the e-commerce market continues to grow, so does consumer concern about product waste. Brands must use the proper package size for delivery to avoid the perception of being wasteful and unsustainable in the eyes of the targeted end-user. FTA Signs As Inaugural Clemson VR Training Sponsor The Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) has signed on as the inaugural sponsor for Clemson Uni- versity’s new virtual print training platform devel- oped by the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics. The Sonoco Institute’s new virtual print platform fea- tures an immersive print lab where users can operate a press and utilize all of the tools and measurement de- vices found in a traditional pressroom.An initial phase of the platform was launched earlier this year at FTA’s INFOFLEX 2019 exhibition in New Orleans, Louisiana. In the past 10 years, the print industry has seen a 25 percent decrease in employment, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The initial phase is modeled after the Clemson’s own print lab and flexographic press, though the ultimate goal is to develop an all-encompassing print environ- ment for scalable training experiences and industry re- cruitment.This inaugural gift from FTA will allow the Sonoco Institute to begin development of phase two.

Keith Wilhelm has joined The Royal Group (TRG) as its new Corporate Director of Manufacturing Services. Wilhelm is a graduate of Indiana University and has more than 25 years of operations experience in the
corrugated packaging industry. He was the former director of engineer- ing and manufacturing services with KapStone, which was purchased by WestRock last year. Wilhelm and his team will be sup- porting the operational initiatives throughout the TRG organization. He will be reporting to Bob McIlvaine, President and CEO. Maxcess Odd Joergenrud has been named the new CEO of Maxcess, replacing Greg Jehlik, who retired after nearly a decade with the company. Joergenrud comes to Maxcess from BBB Industries, a global automo- tive parts remanufacturing business, where he was president and CCO.
