FPPA Plans Pre-Press Workshop The Flexographic Pre-Press Plate- makers Association (FPPA) will host its annual Fall Workshop on Septem- ber 25-26. Offering insights to plant, production, and technical managers in the flexo pre-press industry, this two-day workshop gives attendees the opportunity to learn on a live flexo press at Clemson University. Hands-On The technical and production staff who manufacture flexographic print- ing plates rarely see their work in ac- tion—and that is a missed opportunity to better serve printers and understand the process as a whole. A unique op- portunity, Fall Workshop offers this im- portant holistic perspective.Attendees will spend the first day at Clemson Uni- versity, learning on a live flexographic press. Led by staff from the university’s Graphic Communications Department, workshop attendees will go through a press set-up and run, complete sub- strate print comparisons, and do on- press troubleshooting.

Mondi Aims To Produce Sustainable Flexible Packaging Mondi Group has played a significant role in Proj- ect Proof, a Pioneer Project facilitated by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF).The project has created a proof-of-concept prototype flexible plastic pouch in- corporating a minimum of 20 percent post-consumer plastic waste originating from mixed household waste. The pouch is suitable for packaging household prod- ucts such as detergent. Project Proof is part of Mondi’s commitment to the Ellen MacArthur New Plastics Economy Initiative. It is focused on designing products in line with circu- lar economy principles and has shown that it is pos- sible to use unclean and raw post-consumer recycled content to create new flexible packaging. Mondi will now develop the prototype further to ensure it can be rolled out as a commercially viable product for its multinational FMCG customers. This will support Mon- di’s work as a signatory of the New Plastics Economy Commitment to ensure a minimum of 25 percent of post-consumer waste is incorporated across all its flex- ible plastic packaging where food contact regulations allow by 2025. Mondi spearheaded Project Proof to examine wheth- er it is possible to produce two new flexible plastic packaging products: a recyclable plastic for flexible packaging made with a percentage of post-consumer waste; and a form fill and seal (FFS) pouch for food applications. The goal is to replace multi-layer lami- nates, often found in food packaging, and therefore in- creasing recyclability. As the use of recycled materials and the creation of more recyclable plastics in flexible packaging increases in popularity, they will help circu- larity in the marketplace. The second part of Project Proof focused on long-life food pouches. The standards for food applications were held to high technical specifications agreed by the par- ticipating FMCGs.The aluminum barrier often found in food-standard plastic packaging can extend shelf life, but it creates problems in recycling. Project Proof cre- ated an opportunity for FMCG’s to re-evaluate and pos- sibly reduce the specifications for certain requirements allowing more sustainable materials to be used. There are already materials being tested based on a mono-material construction without problematic lay- ers such as aluminum, which would make recycling possible in existing waste-streams. It was concluded that further development in this area was required as current offerings did not achieve the basic minimum specifications set by the brand owners. Joint Devel- opment Agreements are being discussed for future re- search opportunities in this area.

Corrugated LCA (Cont’d from Page 1)

The corrugated industry’s LCA compares the envi- ronmental impact corrugated boxes and RPCs from raw materials extraction to end-of-life for apples, carrots, grapes, head lettuce, oranges, onions, toma- toes and strawberries. The LCA examined the effects of each system on global warming potential (green- house gas emissions), eutrophication, acidification, non-renewable energy, ozone depletion, respiratory effects, smog formation, freshwater consumption and solid waste. The assessment shows that the two container systems have different environmental impacts that create value-based trade-offs. To minimize the foot- print of delivering products to market, users need to identify the impact categories that are important to them and select the best system accordingly; perfor- mance in each environmental category depends on what’s being shipped, where it’s being shipped and other variables. Working Hard Corrugated manufacturers continually work to increase use of biofuels and decrease use of fossil fuels for energy, and to improve energy efficiency and product performance through better engineer- ing. Between 2006 and 2014, LCA shows that the industry reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent, in addition to improvements in other environmental impacts. Corrugated recovery has increased dramatically in the past 25 years so that corrugated is the most-recov- ered packaging material available today. Increased re- covery of old corrugated containers (OCC), from 72 percent in 2006 to 85 percent in 2014, is the primary reason greenhouse gas emissions declined 35 percent during the same time. Recycling corrugated makes an important difference and is one of the ways the cor- rugated industry can continue to improve its environ- mental footprint. Packaging represents only 3 percent to 15 percent of a product’s total environmental impact. The rest comes from the product itself, so protecting it from damage and premature disposal is very important. Corrugated suppliers specialize in designing packages optimized for performance and materials use. Source reduction has been practiced within the in- dustry for decades, engineering high performance packaging with the least possible amount of fiber material. In fact, the industry has worked with its customers to reduce the amount of corrugated per unit of U.S. industrial production by 12 percent from 2000 to 2017.
