TLMI Updates Regulatory Affairs On December 17th, the Sixth Cir- cuit Court of Appeals removed the stay, or “pause” to OSHA’s imple- mentation of private company/em- ployer (100+ employee) COVID-19 vaccine and testing requirements (commonly referred to as the “ETS”). Safety Concerns In a 2-to-1 decision, the Court agreed with OSHA that the ETS is necessary to protect workers from COVID-19, and that a “grave danger” is present as a result of COVID-19. The Sixth Court also disagreed with the earlier Court’s conclusion that OSHA had overstepped its regula- tory power, (meaning that OSHA was establishing health policy un- der the ETS, instead of addressing safety concerns in the workplace). Following the decision, on Satur- day, December 18th, OSHA issued the following statement: To provide employers with sufficient time to come into compliance, OSHA will not issue citations for noncompli- ance with any requirements of the

Doctors: Covid From Packaging Poses Little Risk While there is no evidence that food or food packaging are significant transmission pathways for Covid-19, there are steps that food companies can take to reduce the risk of contamination, argues Professor Phil Bremer, Dr Catherine McLeod, Dr Jo- anne Kingsbury and Dr Rob Lake. Covid-19 has caused significant disruption to the food industry as companies strive to ensure worker safety and maintain regulatory and consumer confi- dence in their products. Despite billions of meals having been transported around the world and consumed since the start of the pandemic, there is no definitive evidence that food or food packaging has been a source or a transmission route for SARS-CoV-2. Although significant Covid-19 outbreaks have oc- curred at food processing facilities and amongst food service workers, the primary cause of these outbreaks is believed to be due to person-to-per- son transmission, which has been facilitated by the enclosed nature of the work environment, rather than exposure of workers to contaminated food or packaging material. While a number of studies have investigated the ability of SARS-CoV-2 to survive and remain infec- tive on food, packaging material or other surfac- es, the majority of studies have inoculated the food or surface with far higher concentrations of virus than could be reasonably expected to be naturally deposited by infectious people sneezing. Survival over time has then been assessed under conditions that have generally not reflected natural scenarios. Nevertheless, when added to foods, SARS-CoV-2 can remain infectious for varying periods of time, dependent on the properties of the food (pH) and the storage conditions (temperature, relative hu- midity). In the work place, best practice for managing the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection amongst workers in- cludes facilitating and encouraging vaccination, im- plementing routine temperature monitoring, stress- ing the importance of self-isolating and of workers seeking medical advice and getting a Covid-19 test if they have any symptoms of Covid-19 and/or re- spiratory illness. Companies can best protect people, products and packaging, according to the doctors by ensuring there is good ventilation, appropriate PPE use, the use of screens, strong workplace bubbles and so- cial distancing, and that there is strict adherence to good hygiene practices.

New Packaging Laws Go Into Effect In France New laws, including a ban on plastic packaging for several fruits and vegetables came into effect in France on New Year’s Day. The measures aimed at reducing pollution will also prevent manufacturers from dumping certain clothing, hygiene and furniture products that have not been sold. “It is estimated that in Europe, out of the eight million tonnes of plastic produced per year for sin- gle-use packaging, 1.5 million tonnes could already be removed,” said Armand Chaigne, Director of In- dustrial Markets at packaging firm DS Smith. “That represents about 70 billion units of single-use plas- tic packaging about $7.9 billion of additional turn- over potential for cardboard.” Beverage Industry Aims To Be Renewable By 2030 Beverage carton producers have pledged to make cartons from 100 percent renewable and recycled material and cut down on their plastic consumption by 2030 to increase their sustainability and help meet global climate goals. The pledges are part of the industry group Alli- ance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment’s roadmap to 2030. The plan includes reaching a 70 percent recycling rate and a 90 percent collection rate by the end of the decade, as well as improving product design to increase circularity and decarbonizing the value chain in line with the goal to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Propanol Market To Rise Through 2025 The global propanol market is projected to rise from its latest evaluation of $2.19 billion in the year 2016 to reach the valuation of $2.68 billion at the end of the forecast period i.e. 2025, according to a new report by the Transparency Market Research. The report also predicts that the global propanol market will expand at a steady growth rate of 2.3 percent over the forecast period of 2017 to 2025. Products in the global propanol market i.e. pro- panol, is a colorless alcohol solution. These con- sist of two distinct types of isomers i.e. N-propanol and isopropanol. BestBrightHalfHOUSEtwo.qxp_Layout 1 9/12/18 4:28 PM Page 1 Iceland aims to be the first UK supermarket to become plastic neutral, adapting to paper packag- Mondi, Retailer Partner With To Drive Sustainability Mondi, a global provider of packaging and paper, has teamed up with the UK’s number 1 frozen food retailer to provide renewable, recyclable packaging in a move that further validates Mondi’s approach of using “paper where possible, plastic when useful”. Iceland is replacing its previous packaging with Mondi’s functional barrier paper across a number of its ranges. The first newly packaged product to hit the shelves earlier this month was the retailer’s frozen chicken dippers, which reduces the amount of plastic used per year by 80 percent. The functional barrier paper is made from renew- able resources with Mondi managing the paper pro- duction and coating in-house, providing a fully in- tegrated solution. It is easy for consumers to recycle the paper in existing waste streams and as paper is the most widely recycled material in the world — 74 percent of paper and 83 percent of paper-based packaging in Europe are recycled — the solution ensures that the paper can be recycled at the end of its life, contributing to a circular economy.

Meyers Achieves 100% Carbon-Free Goal Meyers, a manufacturer and design studio for product packaging, printed labels, and retail dis- plays, has reached its goal of powering 100 percent of its operations using carbon-free electricity sourc- es by the end of 2021. Last year, Meyers kicked off its commitment to dra- matically reducing its carbon emissions by installing a solar array on the roof of the company’s headquar- ters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Meyers also enrolled in Xcel Energy’s Renewable*Connect program, which provides participants with electricity from wind and solar sources. The R*C program allowed Meyers to expand its local purchasing of renewable energy, which had been ongoing for more than a decade via Xcel Energy’s Windsource program. Meyers also obtained Renewable Energy Credits from a non-prof- it environmental organization, thereby fulfilling its commitment to using only carbon-free electricity.

Hybrid Software Group Partners With Ecologi

Hybrid Software Group has partnered with Ecolo- gi, the platform that facilitates the funding of car- bon offset projects and tree planting around the world, to offset its carbon footprint. Since October of last year, Hybrid Software Group has been working toward compensating for the environmental footprint of every employ- ee in their work and personal life. At work, the Group is implementing policies to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 footprint, such as sourcing renew- able energy and low-carbon travel, and is talking with supply chains to measure and push down on Scope 3 carbon footprint. Through the part- nership with Ecologi, the Group now offsets the carbon footprint of all Group employees, whether at home or at work. To date, the company has achieved an offset of 655 tons of CO2e and contributed to environmen- tal projects across the globe such as solar power generation in Tamil Nadu and Telangana, India, and using waste biomass to produce electricity in Chile.
