In 1963, a patent was issued for a doctor blade edge finishing machine, which was used to develop the company’s standard bevel steel doctor blade.Allison’s son,Tom Allison Jr., who was still in high school at the time, would deliv- er the systems to local customers. After decades of hand finish- ing blades, converters could now use Allison’s machines to produce doctor blades in house.

FINAT To Tackle Industry Trends

Brexit, diversification and intelligent labeling are some of the key industry challenges to be discussed at the 4th edition of FINAT’s European Label Forum. Scheduled for June 6-8 in Dublin, Ireland, the ‘ELF’ will again bring together a broad spectrum of indus- try leaders across the value chain, from raw material suppliers to end users, to debate major strategic busi- ness topics and gain in-depth market knowledge from top international speakers. Among this year’s speakers will be Alastair Camp- bell, spokesman for former British PMTony Blair, who will address what to expect as Brexit negotiations ap- proach the final deadline of March 2019. Sarah Sladek, Founder of XYZ University, author on intergenerational issues in companies, will address a key concern in the industry: the incoming generation of new talent. Economist Noreena Hertz will also offer guidance on how to make the right decisions in an increasing- ly complex business environment. In addition to expectations about the European label industry after Brexit, other topics featured on this year’s “ELF” agenda include diversification of the labels and narrow web industry into short run pack- aging, intelligent labels and packaging, and a look at the total cost of ownership (TCO) of different label printing technologies. Sessions will also provide the latest updates on recruitment and retention of talent, company branding via online marketing and innova- tion in brand protection. An overview of the state of affairs in digital label printing (based on FINAT com- missioned research) will be given, as well as a review of upcoming legislation on serialization and tamper evidence, and insight on how to manage food com- pliance regulations. The ELF program will also feature the FINAT Label Awards Ceremony. Transcontinental Packaging Takes Sustainability Gold Transcontinental Packaging, Clinton, Missouri, won the Gold award for Sustainability with its com- postable peanut bag at the 2018 Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards Competition. Developed inter- nally at Transcontinental Ultra Flex, the new flexible peanut bag was designed using certified com- postable materials to support arenas and stadiums' green initiatives and help sports teams, venues, and leagues achieve the next level of landfill waste diver- sion. The graphics were reverse-printed using stan- dard flexographic printing technology.

Dont Miss The Flexo Industry’s Premiere Marketing Opportnity

Allison Systems, after focusing on introducing new technologies to the marketplace, incorporated in 1968.At about this time, customers began requesting pre-finished blades, which the company provided. Our pre-finished blade service evolved from there to what it is today. As a company that built its reputation on techno- logical advancements, Allison Systems has doggedly focused its resources on developing an ever-expand- ing web of products and services. In 1972, Allison Systems engineered and built its first blade position- ing system for gravure printing. After completing his engineering physics degree at Cornell University and gaining some experience in other fields, Tom Jr. returned to guide the company after his father passed away in 1979. Expanding Business The company expanded the physical footprint of its headquarters in 1979 to allow further growth and in the early 1980s,Allison Systems designed and built an advanced proprietary computer-controlled doctor blade production system. In 1987, the company introduced the first doctor blades featuring its Superhoned ® bevel. The following year, responding to the increased use of water-based inks and their corrosive effects on carbon steel, the company introduced its plastic doctor blade line. In 1991, the company introduced its composite doctor blade line to improve performance on ceramic anilox rolls for flexo printing customers who wanted an al- ternative to steel doctor blades. Another expansion occurred in 1996 and the com- pany added its Gold series of long-life metal blades to its product line. In 2000, Allison introduced its Superhoned ® Plus bevel, and in 2009 the company expanded its prod- uct line to include end seals and Flexo chambers. In 2013, Allison added peristaltic pumps for flexo chambers to its growing line of flexo-oriented prod- ucts; the following year it became an Authorized Dis- tributor for The Flexo Factor and began carrying its complete line of cleaning solutions; and in 2015 Alli- son Systems became an ISO 9001:2008 registered company. “As the pre-finished doctor blade market developed, we went from a couple of employees and shipping a couple hundred blades a day to shipping thousands of blades a day today with 14 employees,” said Bill Warn- er, Allison Systems’ Vice President. “We have intro- duced many new materials over the years including

various forms of plastic, composite, and steel materi- als.As a result, we offer one of the largest varieties of materials for doctor blades so that our customers can benefit from the properties of the material that is best suited for their application and goals.” The f lexo industry continues to grow, with the steady and continual introduction of new technolo- gies and advancements.Warner believes the key to Al- lison Systems continued success lies in accurately identifying the challenges its customers are facing and helping them unlock new opportunities.

The SCIENCE of flexo rollers and sleeves Skilled flexo printers know any variation in temperature, humidity, substrates and a host of other conditions will affect the quality of their work. Cleanliness of lines, accuracy of colors and softness of shades can make or break a job. But if you want to maximize profits, you need to optimize uptime, speed and quality. The anilox rollers and sleeves in your presses are only as good as the science behind them— the technology of precision . ARC rollers and sleeves are built to exacting OEM dimensions, with cell geometries engineered for efficient ink usage and precise volumes. Contact ARC today or visit our website to learn more about what the science of flexography from ARC International can do to enhance your graphics.

The Allison team with the company’s specialty gravure doctor blade systems in 1987.

“As flexography continues to advance, challenges continue to develop,” said Warner. “Inks and anilox rolls are constantly changing and generally becoming more abrasive to the doctor blade. Advancements in press speeds are also contributing to blade wear. The demands for better print quality necessitates that the doctor blade perform better and more consistently. An ongoing challenge that is always being addressed is minimizing press down time. Improper application of the doctor blade is often the cause for early doctor blade failure leading to press down time. While train- ing will help establish standard operating procedures so that the doctor blade is applied properly, choosing the best blade for the application is also necessary. Stopping a press to change the doctor blade will cost significantly more than the price of the blade itself. When this is understood, the additional cost for an up- graded doctor blade is easily justifiable. Long life blades are recommended in high abrasive applications or any application where they will help avoid inter- rupting the press run because of doctor blade issues.” Allison Systems works with its customers to evalu- ate their current blade setup and help determine al-

The company also remains committed to researching new materials that will help achieve the demands of today’s printing requirements.“We are now in differ- ent stages of evaluation of two materials which we believe will offer enhanced performance for doctor- ing applications,” said Warner. “Testing and feedback of one of the materials looks very promising and should be available to our customers soon.” After a long and storied history, the company simulta- neously honors its past while also keeping its sights set on the future.Tom Allison Jr. passed away in 2012 and his wife Eve Allison has been leading the company as President ever since. As the flexo industry continues to advance, Allison Systems plans to remain poised to aid its customers as many enter uncharted waters. Anticipating its continued growth, Allison Systems is currently planning a facility expansion project that will provide an approximate 60 percent increase to its operation. The added space is needed so the com- pany can install additional equipment allowing Alli- son Systems to add further product lines to its already expansive portfolio. It will also allow the company to further improve the quality of its exist- ing products. The expanded space promises, as well, to provide workflow efficiencies that will enhance customer service and support. “I foresee continuing improvement in the flexo- graphic process, which will lead to increased press speeds, improved quality, and less press downtime,” Warner said. “As changes evolve in the process, the doctor blade will likely need to also evolve to accom- modate demands for better performance.” Transcontinental Acquires Multifilm Packaging Corp.
