Packaging Industry Focuses On Trends

A&V Becomes STRIPE VR Sponsor Anderson & Vreeland, Inc. an- nounced its decision to become a leading sponsor of STRIPE VR, the virtual print training simulator devel- oped by Clemson University’s Sono- co Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics, with a donation of $80,000. The Sonoco Institute is Clemson Uni- versity’s research and development center for advanced solutions and resources for the printing and pack- aging industry. This donation will allow the Sonoco Institute to invest in its interactive vir- tual reality print lab for workforce train- ing and recruitment,STRIPEVR.One of these advancements is a training simu- lator where trainees can interact with printing equipment in new ways such as virtual“hands-on”experience and in- teraction with the machines and their parts, training with different measure- ment devices, and setting impressions to review the results. “With a decline in employment in the print industry over the past 10 years, a cutting-edge solution is need- ed to attract talent to the workforce,”

reported by Greg Kishbaugh

M intel has released a new study entitled Global Packaging Trends 2020 that looks at a number of areas packaging com- panies and brands should be focused upon, one of which is re-

cycling. Mintel believes pack- aging manufacturers and brands must continue to de- velop and commercialize re- cyclable package innovations even if the capabilities to re- cycle them do not yet exist. Over the past decade, many have become familiar with the mantra ‘reduce, reuse, re- cycle’, but it tells an incom- plete story. It’s hard to recy- cle if consumers aren’t first reminded to ‘return’ packag- ing to the proper recycling bin or store take-back system. According to many reports, the demand for recycled plas- tics today far outstrips supply.

If the 2025 and 2030 commitments companies and brands have made to reach 100 percent recycled content are to be met, new and rapidly scalable recycling and processing technologies must be conceived, commercialised, implemented, and promoted. With just 9 percent of the world’s plastic waste actually being recycled, according to 2018 research from the United Nations, there is a dire need to explore technologies that are ‘technically’ recyclable now, and for the development of plastic alternatives.

Packaging Study (Cont’d from Page 1) Next-generation technologies are only small pieces of the greater equation that will address and solve the waste and recycling crisis. The ultimate solution is brands, manufacturers, packaging industry bodies, governments, and environmental non-profits working in harmony to better inform consumers, develop more easily recyclable packaging, and establish better col- lection systems and recycling processes. Recycling Efforts From Around The World Country-wide efforts in India: Marico Ltd., one of India’s leading consumer beauty and wellness compa- nies, has partnered with Future Retail’s format Big Ba- zaar to launch Plastic Lao Paise Kamao, a closed loop recycling program that enables consumers to submit plastic bottles across 21 key Big Bazaar outlets around Mumbai. For each bottle submitted, consumers receive 10 rupees instantly credited to their Future Pay wallet, made available for their next purchase. Recycling goes ‘grassroots’ in the United States: Pennsylvania-based Total Recycling — in a joint ef- fort with Materials Recovery for the Future, a research collaborative of brands, manufacturers, and packaging companies — has created a first-of-its-kind program in the United States to collect flexible packaging materials at curbside.New vision systems can detect and separate flexible packaging from other recyclables and while the recyclate produced, called RFlex, cannot be processed back to flexible packaging materials, it can be used for consumer and industrial goods of equal or higher value. Kao in Japan brings recycling into its Kirei lifestyle strategy: Japan-based beauty, personal care, and house- hold care brand Kao is taking a unique approach to recycling as a centrepiece of its environmental, social, and governance strategy called Kirei Lifestyle (‘kirei’ means ‘something that is clean,well-ordered, and beau- tiful’ in Japanese). The strategy focuses on developing innovative technologies to recycle used plastic pack- aging, develop and use high-quality, low-priced recy- cled plastics, and promote RecyCreation, a program through which new value is created from used plastics. Creating A Path Forward Chemical recycling offers an alternative to ineffi- cient mechanical recycling : The prospects for chemi- cal recycling — sometimes referred to as ‘transforma- tional technology’— offer more efficient and profitable recycling for single-use plastics. In chemical recycling, plastic is chopped and treated with a combination of water, heat, pressure, and enzymes or catalysts to break the plastic resin down into its constituent parts. These (Cont’d on Page 7)

FLAG Introduces Peer Group Summit

FLAG (Flexo Label Advantage Group LLC) will bring its annual Members Meeting to theTwin Cities this fall and introduce a new concept in the spring — a Peer Group Summit. Recognizing the need for continuing education and networking for independent converters, FLAG has an- nounced the location, speakers and plant tour for its 2020 Annual Meeting. The meeting, which now draws more than 100 members and vendors, will take place at the Hyatt Regency Bloomington/Minneapolis locat- ed close to the Mall of America in Bloomington,Minne- sota on October 27-29. By request, this year’s meeting will feature a full day of small peer group breakouts. To celebrate the ten year anniversary of this meeting, the Awards Dinner will take place at the top of the US Bank Stadium, home to the Minnesota Vikings. Additional highlights of the annual meeting include a tour of a member’s fa- cility, exhibits from FLAGVendors and keynote presen- tations on mission critical topics for the independent converter. This year the group will tour Lofton Labels and learn how the company has significantly grown their business over the past few years without increas- ing manpower. Peer group meetings, and the opportunity to openly network with converters of a similar size facing similar challenges, have become so popular with FLAG mem- bers that two new peer groups have been formed and a special “Peer Group Summit” has been scheduled for May 12-14, 2020 in downtown Asheville, North Carolina. In addition to a full day of peer group interactions,Mem- bers will tour the North Carolina facility of UPM Raflatac. APR Partners With OMET For Flexo Training All Printing Resources (APR) has partnered with OMET to provide hands-on comprehensive education- al and training at OMET’s Elk Grove Village, Illinois, NorthAmerican headquarters. This is the only demo fa- cility for OMET narrow web presses in North America. The two companies’ first joint seminar, Flexo Funda- mentals , will be held at APR Headquarters March 24- 25 and will feature a visit to the OMET facility where a seven-color flexo job will run on the OMET Xjet pow- ered by Durst. The hybrid press system combines an OMET Xflex X6 430 and Durst Tau RSC. APR’s Technical Innovation Center has a variety of platemaking solutions (solvent, water and thermal) in addition to the newest Esko CDI Crystal and XPS UV LED exposure.

Packaging Study (Cont’d from Page 5) chemicals can then be re-polymerised into virgin-quali- ty resins and used in new plastic packaging, used as fuel or used as the raw materials for other plastic products. Paper-based flexible packaging gains ground : Nestlé has been at the forefront of the development and commercialisation of recyclable paper-based flexi- ble packaging. In 2019, it introduced Nesquik All Natu- ral in five European markets, KitKat in Japan, and YES! bars in Europe, all in Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) recyclable paper flexible packaging, alternatives to non-recyclable plastic films. Tubes squeezing their way into the recycling bin : Tubes are typically made from sheets of plastic lam- inates, can include a thin layer of aluminum, and are pressed into a single, nonrecyclable structure. Slated to roll out in 2020, Colgate’s recyclable tube is con- structed of multiple grades of high-density polyeth- ylene (HDPE), a widely recycled plastic. The natural soda deodorant stick from Denmark-based Ben&Anna is a solid bar deodorant that retails in a paperboard tube and carries a ‘no plastic’ logo. The Bottom Line On Plastic Recycling Deal with the issue : Despite the world’s wishes, sin- gle-use plastic will exist for decades to come. Retailers, brands, package manufacturers, and consumers must embrace recycling as a primary means of responsibly dealing with not just single-use plastics, but all types of plastics and all types of packaging. Do your part in finding a solution : Retailers, brands, and package manufacturers must all do more to pro- mote recycling — starting with on-pack messaging and education. Don’t wait : It is imperative to develop and commercial- ize packaging technologies today that are ahead of their ability to be recycled, rather than the other way around. Packaging Reset ‘Sustainable’ packaging will be supplanted by ‘re- sponsible’ packaging - a practical approach brands can promote and defend, and consumers can understand and act on. Next-generation alternatives to fossil fuel-based tech- nologies are not always the more environmentally re- sponsible choice — especially when there are many ‘re- sponsible’packaging solutions available and no one right answer. Brands and packaging manufacturers need to ex- plore all options to find the more responsible choice for the application, occasion, and moment in time. Some sustainability approaches, like blanket plastics bans, can cause unintended consequences that may
