FTA Fall Conference Examines Workflow

Potter Named TLMI Supplier Of The Year Patrick Potter, President of Flexo Wash, was named TLMI Supplier of the Year for 2019 at the association’s Annual Awards Gala on October 29 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa. Presented on an annual basis, the Supplier of the Year Award honors and recognizes an individual for their ongoing volunteer service and dedi- cation to TLMI and to the greater in- dustry.Criteria for winning the award includes service to TLMI on the asso- ciation’s board and committees, in ad- dition to continuous commitment to the industry as a whole by helping to promote and foster its growth. Committed To The Industry Potter and his family are long-time supporters of TLMI and its convert- er members. Currently he serves on the TLMI Board of Directors and the Marketing Committee. The Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) held its annual fall conference, October 28-30 at the Sheraton Charlotte Ho- tel in Charlotte, North Carolina.The meeting, chaired by Keith

Nagle, Global Director Business Development for Phoseon Technology, focused on detailing the start-to-finish creation of a flexo-printed job. “I believe with a singular focus, a technical conference has the ability to communicate important process information while keeping the audience focused,” said Nagle. Session Chair Keith Nagle opened the FTA Fall Conference with Defining The Race, in which he outlined the goal of following a flexo project from start to finish.

AICC Launches NAM Health Care For Members AICC, The Independent Packaging Association,will offer an association health plan to its members,extend- ing affordable health care to small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in approved states. In states where the association health plan is not available, the AICC will connect manufacturers with available small- group options in their states. The plan, called NAM Health Care, was developed to meet the unique health care needs of manufacturers. It will offer a portfolio of health benefits options insured by UnitedHealthcare. In states where these plans are avail- able, businesses with 2 to 99 employees will be able to choose from a variety of PPO (Preferred Provider Orga- nization) and HSA (Health SavingsAccount) health plans. Members will also have access to UnitedHealthcare’s Choice Plus care provider network of more than 1.3 million physicians and care professionals, 6,000 hos- pitals and other care facilities nationwide. The meeting began with Defining the Race , in which a panel, led by Nagle,mimicked a pre-production meet- ing, dissecting variables and obstacles encountered, discussed the design requirements, and identified the consumables and materials used. The panel also fea- tured Joe Tuccitto, Sean Teufler, Dan Uress, Catherine Haynes,AJ Grome,Ann Michaud, Bobby Congdon, and Mark Samworth Bobby Congdon, Assistant Director at Sonoco Insti- tute and Christopher Teachout, Technical Sales Sup- port for Max Daetwyler Corp., led the discussion on Empowering the Pit Crew .Virtual reality (VR) is gear- ing up to take a new role in press operator training. The presenters discussed how VR can provide cost-ef- fective, zero-waste and scalable training. The session showed a new flexographer how to set up and run a virtual flexo press. Tools of the Trade Optimizing the Tools for the Race examined the importance of performing a print optimization to de- termine the prepress requirements, ink densities and press settings prior to fingerprinting.The consumables that were selected for the project were discusses, in- cluding the attributes that led to their selection and how they performed on press. Catherine Haynes, All Printing Resources, present- ed in the Rounding the Curves session, focusing on fingerprinting. She explained the two fingerprints and their differences, then showed a live demonstration of a fingerprint run on a VR press.
