Brook and Whittle has signed definitive agreements to acquire Innovative Labeling Solutions, Inc. (ILS) and Wizard Labels LLC in partnership with founders, Jay Dollries, Steve Wolf and Steve Smith. Brook & Whittle is majority-owned by private equity firm Snow Phipps Group, LLC.The closing of the acquisitions is expected to occur within 30 days. UPM Forest Film Receives Innovation Award UPM Raflatac’s Forest Film label material has received the 2020 Innovation in Responsible Sourcing award from the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC). Forest Film is claimed to be the world’s first polypro- pylene film label material derived entirely from wood- based sources based on mass balance approach. The sourcing begins with UPM Raflatac’s sister com- pany, UPM Biofuels, which converts pulp production residue, crude tall oil from sustainably managed forests, into renewable naphtha, a drop-in raw material for the chemical industry. This product, called UPM BioVerno, is sent to a resin supplier and then a film supplier to convert it into the filmic face material the UPM Raflatac then manufac- tures into the laminate label material known as Forest Film. Forest Film is an International Sustainability and Car- bon Certification (ISCC) PLUS-certified product,mean- ing it uses sustainable resources to replace an equiv- alent amount of fossil resources in the production process — the mass balance approach.

In fact, 61 percent of respondents stat- ed their purchasing habits over the previous 3 months have vastly changed the way they will shop for food items in the future. As CPG brands weigh strategies to increase sales and consumer behavior continues to shift, it’s clear from the report that food packaging and food labels play a very significant role in influencing which brands find their way into consumers’ homes. In fact, 66 percent of respondents who identified changes in their purchasing behaviors (as a result of the pandemic) said they will pay more attention to food labels and food packaging moving forward. The behavioral shifts in grocery shopping will seemingly have a lasting impact — with 88 percent of respondents stating they plan on purchasing those same food products again in the foreseeable future. There are a number of factors consumers cite as the reason they are likely to re-purchase previously unfa- miliar food products, including: • The packaging’s unique design (28 percent of re- spondents) •The product’s eco-friendly packaging (27 percent of respondents) • The language on the food product’s label (23 per- cent of respondents) •The size of the packaging (17 percent of respondents) • The color of the packaging (4 percent of respondents)

The Influence of Popular Food Label Phrases 64 percent of the U.S. consumers surveyed paid more for a food product that featured popular food label phrases. Respondents were then asked to select the food label phrases that are currently influencing their purchasing behaviors. Below is a list of those terms ranked from most to least important:

Despite the respondents’ low appreciation for labels with the term“ready-made”,42 percent of respondents purchased more food products labeled “pre-cooked”, “ready-made” or “stovetop-ready” over the previous 3 months. Respondents aged 30-44 are most likely (71 percent) to pay more money for a product based on popular food labeling terms, followed by 18-29 (64 percent), 60+ (61 percent), and 45-60 (60 percent). Conversely, more than 1/3 of respondents (36 per- cent) conveyed that they have avoided purchasing food products that display popular phrases commonly found on food labels. Notably, male consumers were 8 percent more likely to avoid food products with pop- ular terms on the label. Factors playing a role in the avoidance of products with popular terms on the label: • The perceived or actual increased cost of the items (38 percent of respondents) • Fear of the claim being misleading (34 percent of respondents) • Unfamiliarity with the brand (18 percent of respondents) • Confusing language on the label (10 percent of respondents) While it’s clear that popular phrases are influencing consumers, it’s vital that CPG food brands not mislead (Cont’d on Page 9)

Badger Tag & Label Celebrates 85th Anniversary Badger Tag & Label, Random Lake, Wisconsin, cele- brates its 85th anniversary this year. The company’s original location in downtown Ran- dom Lake is still in operation, albeit with major up- grades. Three years ago, a second production facility was added about two miles away to round out the 52,000 square feet of space. Currently 17 printing presses are in production between the two locations. BobThiel,current company president,is the third-gen- eration of the family-owned, privately-held business. His grandfather, Emil Thiel, incorporated the business on September 4, 1935, shortly after the business chal- lenges of the Great Depression. Green Bay Packaging Acquires Third Dimension Green Bay Packaging Inc., a packaging company based in Green Bay,Wisconsin, has acquired Third Di- mension Inc., a packaging company based in Geneva, Ohio.The acquisition went into effect October 1. Third Dimension is focused on corrugated packag- ing innovation, molded foam packaging and four-color digital printing.The company was founded in 1991 by Louis DeJesus and Jeanette DeJesus and has facilities in Geneva and Middlefield, Ohio, and services customers in Ohio,Virginia and Kentucky. Third Dimension will continue to be led by Louis DeJesus and Mike Kelly. Mondi Wins Awards For Sustainable Food Packaging Mondi, a global packaging and paper manufacturer, has been recognized in this year’s Austrian Green Star Packaging Awards for two recent sustainable packag- ing innovations developed using its customer-centric approach, EcoSolutions: PerFORMing — paper-based packaging with special barrier coating to protect cheese slices. Mondi devel- oped a special kraft paper,Advantage Formable Brown, to replace rigid plastic trays. Its stretch characteristics mean it can be formed into a shallow tray enhanced with a special barrier coating. This PerFORMing tech- nology combines 80 percent paper, a renewable and re- cyclable raw material,with a 20 percent barrier coating. In addition, Mondi was recognized for its fully recy- clable thermoforming plastic film for meat.
