Wine Market Labels To Show 2 Percent Increase The market for wine labels across all formats is fore- cast to grow by 2 percent between 2016 and 2018, ref lecting increasing levels of wine production around the globe, according to a new report from AWA Alexander Watson Associates. However, growth in global wine consumption is challenged by the in- creasing popularity of other alcoholic beverages — particularly craft beers and some spirits — so the in- centive to raise the level of visual appeal of wine la- beling and packaging remains strong. Europe currently claims the major share of global wine production, at 62 percent, with the wine-grow- ing countries of South America — Argentina, Chile, and Brazil— in second place with a 10 percent share, and the United States third with 8 percent. These three regions also dominate the use of wine labeling materials. Overall, as AWA research shows, the wine producers still prefer traditional paper label sub- strates over film substrates. Pressure-sensitive labels continue to capture market share from traditional glue-applied labels, with more than 60 percent of total usage, and are forecast by AWA to grow at 2.8 percent per year in 2016 to 2018). Glue-applied labels, with a 36 percent share, will also grow fractionally, while the ‘newcomer’ tech- nologies, sleeve labels, will increase their current small share by a massive 7.1 percent per year over the same period. The third annual “Printing for a Better Future” event, sponsored by Pamarco, benefited a number of at-risk kids in Kosovo. Each year, Pamarco employees, their families and friends donate bedding, toys, and many other items to children around the world. The donations are collected over the course of the year, then packaged and shipped by Pamarco. This year, the shipment was received by a Georgia family that relocated to Kosovo in order to work with locals in helping at-risk children and helping them develop life skills. Over the past three years, the shipments have con- sistently grown. This year was no exception. “This is Pamarco’s third year collecting and contributing through in-house packaging and shipping of the do- nations,” said Katie Graham, Pamarco’s Marketing and Communications, “and each year we’ve not only reached our collection goals, but we have also in- creased participation.” Pamarco Donates To At-Risk Children

The SCIENCE of flexo rollers and sleeves Skilled flexo printers know any variation in temperature, humidity, substrates and a host of other conditions will affect the quality of their work. Cleanliness of lines, accuracy of colors and softness of shades can make or break a job. But if you want to maximize profits, you need to optimize uptime, speed and quality. UPM Raflatac Launches Brazil Reforestation Project The Atlantic Forest that hugs the coastal areas of Brazil is one of the country’s most environmentally threatened biomes. UPM Raflatac will be contribut- ing to the protection of this vital ecosystem by part- nering on a one-hectare reforestation project of the Jaguari River. UPM Raflatac has teamed up with the Prefeitura Municipal de Jaguariúna, Ambev, The Nature Conser- vancy, Associação Mata Ciliar, Embrapa-Meio Ambi- ente,Agência das Bacias PCJ and Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA) for this reforestation project along a Permanent Protection Area of the Jaguari River in the city of Jaguariúna, where UPM Raflatac Brazil is head- quartered and operates a terminal supporting the South American market. The project kicked off on Wednesday, October 5 with a special tree planting event attended by UPM Raf latac employees and local students. Part of the city of Jaguariúna’s “Programa Bacias Jaguariúna”, which creates partnerships with compa- nies located there, the Brazil Reforestation Project will create a riparian buffer zone along the Jaguari River, which supplies 95 percent of the water supply to the nearby city. Riparian buffers help improve water quality by preventing pollutants from reaching a river or stream, and by planting 1,666 native Mata Atlantic species trees, construction of fences along the re- covered area, and continued maintenance, the river will flow cleaner than ever before. It is expected the project will last for two years, due to wildfire prevention, soil treatment, irrigation, and growth of the planted trees.

Esko is conducting three regional Brand Packaging & Technology Summits. The free events will take place: • October 4: M Club Room at TCF Stadium - Univer- sity of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota, event and stadium tour. • October 12: Founders Brewery, Grand Rapids, Michigan, event and group dinner. • October 20: Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta, Georgia, event and entrance into aquarium. “While Esko has a long-standing heritage with a ma- jority of package printers and converters, as the needs of the packaging supply chain continue to evolve, we are increasingly gaining traction with our packaging so- lutions directed to brand owners,” explained Joe Ecker- le, Esko Brand Owner Director.“More and more brands in fast-moving consumer goods and pharmaceuticals understand the need for efficient solutions to get their packaging from ideation to shelf faster while still avoid- ing costly errors. Especially with increased regulatory requirements — including the recent changes to the Nutritional Facts Table — there is need for information and guidance. These summits are one way that Esko can help its brand owner customers and contacts.” While the program will be sponsored by Esko,Media- Beacon (developer of its asset management solution), GlobalVision (provider proofreading technologies), X- Rite (providers of complete end-to-end color manage- ment solutions), and Corbus (specializing in leveraging innovative processes and technology), will also partici- pate in some or all of the events. Finding Solutions The full-day agenda will begin with a complete demonstration of brand management solutions, in- cluding project briefing, structural packaging develop- ment, graphic design development, the merging of 3D structure and graphics, packaging management, auto- mated content and design inspection, project collabo- ration and approval, and digital asset management. Due to the particular importance and short timeline for compliance of the recent changes and require- ments to the U.S. FDA Nutritional Facts Table, there will be considerable focus on content management and new software to easily create updated FDA nutritional templates on existing packaging. After lunch, there will be a group discussion about industry challenges and trends (particularly regulatory, social/mobile pressure, supply chain complexities, technology adoption and process standardization). The remainder of the day is reserved for rotating breakout sessions where smaller groups can dive deeper into each solution.
