WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS

As I traveled around the company talking to employees and customers this past year, the overwhelming question continues to be “When will it all end?” The frustration and disappointment of telling customers “No” has put a unique strain on our entire company. Franklin is a growth company, and it’s difficult to hear employees say, “How can we grow when we don’t have anything to sell?” or “What’s the point of talking to new customers?” or even worse, “I don’t care, just ship them whatever we have.” The last two years have been incredibly challenging, but 2022 doesn’t seem to be getting better. The unprecedented demand is straining the supply chain so severely that prices are soaring upward again, lead times are lengthening, and in some cases, vendors just say, “No.” We are making significant investments in our door shops and truss plants to help meet future demand, but increased production won’t happen until early 2023. Our supply partners must make even larger investments, which means we will continue to be limited on engineered wood, windows, cabinets, doors, trim, and siding, and others for the foreseeable future.

experiences in their lifetime. Everything you do will affect how customers perceive Franklin Building Supply … not just today but also in the future when our hands aren’t tied behind our backs.

Communication is key to giving yourself a chance to excel. Truthful, transparent communication both internally and externally, will have a huge

impact. People in general prefer good information so they can deal with bad information (especially when we have an alternate solution), but no information or false information is the worst because it’s completely avoidable. Builders, homeowners, and fellow employees deserve your best effort on what is happening with their supplies with as much notice as possible. Information is passed throughout our operation from buyers, receivers, yard workers, dispatchers, salesman, builders, and subcontractors. Do your part to make sure you treat the information with the respect, expediency, and truth it deserves when it’s under your control. What we do and how we act will grow our business even in this season of supply chain challenges and scarcity. Inflation, allocation, and volatility are all challenges we have faced and will continue to overcome in 2022. We are projecting a strong year due in large part to your efforts to think differently, and to say, “Yes” whenever possible to solve our customers’ problems. When supply constraints ease, builders will remember who operated with dignity and respect, who made the job easier in the difficult times, and who they trust for the future. Do your best and play your part to make sure that it is our employee-owned company, Franklin Building Supply!

So … how do we grow? What is the point? Why does it matter?

I choose to look at work and my life from a perspective where every difficulty I face is an opportunity to get better. Overcoming adversity and winning is one of the most rewarding feelings a person

MEET THE TEAM IN TWIN FALLS Led by Dirk Redfern

These hearty people are your EO Committee representatives for this year. They will be working to get to know you and they will be happy if you reach out to them with questions. The mission of the EO Committee is to help develop our ownership culture throughout the company through fun and education, with the goal of building wealth for all employee-owners. YOUR EO COMMITTEE FOR 2022

Jay Tegethoff Jay came to Twin from our Burley location one year ago and wasted no time in solidifying his team. Jay has the knowledge and an ability to get everyone on the same page and moving forward. He’s always looking for ways to improve and is a fantastic leader at the front counter in Twin Falls. Sierra Baker Sierra is our newest addition to the sales team, and we are thankful that she is on board. Sierra takes ownership of everything that she does, and this shines through with her customer service and in the areas of the store that she is responsible for. Scott Ranstrom There are few people out there more in tune with power and decking products than Scott. If this were high school, he would without a doubt be elected class clown. The sheer number of nicknames he has is staggering — in fact, one of our vendors addresses the items to him as “Scott Stallionson.” Riggo Varela Riggo moved to the sales counter from our door shop in 2019. His knowledge of doors has been a game-changer for our ability to better serve the do-it-yourself customers. Riggo also shows incredible attention to detail and makes a tough job much easier for his customers. Linda Hampton Linda is the glue that keeps the store together constantly making sure everyone is taken care of. Larry Rice Larry decided to hang up his CSR bags at the end of 2020 and wanted to finish out his career upfront, and boy, did we get the winning ticket. The knowledge Larry brings is a huge benefit for everyone involved.

GIVE THE GIFT OF HIGH FIVES And You Might Get a Visa Gift Card in Return

The EO Committee will see every High Five you submit, and they will make sure that the right managers and supervisors see them as well. The folks you are bragging about deserve to be known by their bosses. We believe that good work deserves to be recognized. By the way, submitting a High Five is also good work and the bosses will see that you are praising others. Heaps on you too! Wait! There’s more! You could win $25 simply by submitting a High Five. Starting in March’s newsletter, the best High Fives of the month will be printed, and the folks who submitted them will each win a $25 gift card. To be eligible, your High Fives must fit into one of the categories described above. Hint: It helps if you are descriptive so we can all see what you saw. There will be five winners each month, one from each category. A gift card will also go to the subject of your winning praise. Talk about getting noticed! Have fun and heap on some praise for the folks around you who are doing amazing work! Make it rain!

We have been giving each other High Fives for a while now, and we have a small (but meaningful) group of people who regularly use this easy tool to praise fellow employees. The EO Committee wants to ramp up the fun. Read on to find out how it can benefit you. It starts with the basics of human nature. Rule No. 1 is that we all like to be recognized for doing good work. In fact, it turns out that positive feedback is an essential daily nutrient that helps human beings thrive. Rule No. 2 is that humans tend to repeat behaviors that get noticed. If you want someone to keep doing good work, let them know you saw them, and they will do it again. For a company of employee-owners like ours, this is the road to gold! We all profit from more people doing great stuff all the time.

employees by sending an email to HighFive@ FranklinBuildingSupply.com. Name the person who you caught doing good and briefly describe what they did to impress you. Fit it in one of these five categories. (Hint: “We Make Building Easy” is the catch-all for things that don’t easily fit into one of the other categories.) Safe: Providing for the welfare of our employees and all who visit our facilities or job sites. Guide: Great handoffs between team members in bringing customer projects to a successful conclusion. Wow: Creating an exceptional and memorable experience for customers and employees. Strive: Always improving, learning, expanding skills to better oneself and our business. We Make Building Easy: This is our mission at FBS. This is what we are about. Anything that can lead to us being better individually or as a group will advance this mission.

The process is simple. Fire up your phone or other device and praise the good works of your fellow

SPOTLIGHT ON MICHAEL ROBILLARD Highlighting One of Franklin Building Supply’s Best

For four and a half years, Michael Robillard has been working hard to set Franklin Building Supply apart from the rest. As an account coordinator in the Bellevue, Idaho, location, he works hard to deliver satisfaction each and every day. His teammates love his positivity, and clients are always wowed by his enthusiasm and customer service. Michael’s favorite aspect of his job is the opportunity he is afforded to learn. “Being still green to this industry, I have a lot of knowledge to acquire, and every time I learn something new, I pursue it to the best of my ability,” he explains. “Being in the position that I am in allows me to gain knowledge directly from the salesmen I work with and the contractors that we service.” For Michael, the most challenging part of his career is the art of time management. At times, it can be very demanding to make sure that the needs of the customer are met while managing tasks as efficiently as possible. Lean, a series of five principles designed to improve efficiency in the workplace, includes defining value, mapping the value stream, creating flow, using a pull system, and pursuing perfection. Michael feels that Lean is reflected via the way he organizes, stores, and disperses his >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4
