Franklin Building Supply - January 2022

OWNER -TO- OWNER www.franklinbuildingsupply.com | 208-514-2200 | 9222 W. Barnes Dr., Boise, ID 83709 JANUARY 2022 THERE IS MUCH TO CELEBRATE

And Much To Look Forward To

In February 2017, we launched a new multiyear vision for Franklin Building Supply, a vision built on improvements for our customers and employees that we believed would add up to a level of sales and profitability considered almost impossible before. We called this our 2021 Vision since it was focused on what we believed we could achieve within five years.

This is the journey we have been on for five years now, and with 2021 coming to an end, we have much to celebrate and be proud of as a team. We have added significantly more value for customers. We have dramatically developed our team of employees. We have made incredible strides in our safety and LEAN journeys. We have successfully embraced an expansive sales mindset and grown sales with both new and existing customers, from delivery and retail to manufacturing and install. We blew away our $250-million sales goal, and we came close to our 10% net profit target. You should be proud of what you and the team working with you every day accomplished over these past five years. I know I am. As we head into 2022, we will introduce a new five-year vision as part of a summit event that about 70 of our leaders from across the company will be attending in March. Our new five-year vision will be more ambitious as we focus on what we are capable of accomplishing as a team of employee owners, but it will be built the same way as our 2021 Vision, a vision built on a series of inputs that will become our focus for the next five years and help us reach our desired destination. One of the changes that has already taken place in 2022 went into effect on Jan. 1, which is when our longtime CEO, Rick Lierz, who was given the leadership reins from his father and our co-founder Dick Lierz, handed the CEO leadership reins over to me. It is a privilege and an honor to follow in the footsteps of Dick and Rick, men who are exemplary role models at work, at home, and in the community. I am indebted to Rick for guiding this multiyear transition so well. Rick will continue to be involved as chairman of the board, and we will have opportunities later in the year to recognize his official retirement. So, as we head into 2022, and I take on the title of CEO, I find myself as excited as ever to be leading this great organization into a new vision of what’s possible as we stand on the broad shoulders of all who have come before us. We have much to accomplish, but we have much to acknowledge and celebrate. I look forward to working alongside every employee owner in 2022 and beyond to make Franklin Building Supply the best lumber and building material dealer in the country as we endeavor to provide an exceptional workplace today and build transformational wealth for tomorrow.

INCREASE OUR CAPACITY

DEVELOP OUR TEAM

CREATE AND ADDVALUE FOR CUSTOMERS

For five years now, the 2021 Vision has driven everything we have focused on in the areas of adding value for customers, developing our team of employees, increasing our capacity through a focus on safety and LEAN, and expanding our sales with new and existing customers. Each of these four building blocks has been focused on inputs because inputs are what drive outputs or results. If you want to get in better shape personally, you don’t focus every day on your weight target. You focus every day on a series of inputs that will drive the desired result, such as exercise time, running speed, repetitions, weight lifted, calories consumed, etc. All of these inputs, accumulated consistently and in combination over many months, add up to an outcome or result that is aligned with your vision or goal for getting to a certain weight on the scale. Improving a business is similar. There is no single problem to solve or single improvement to make. Improving a business, and orienting a business to gauge success according to its potential and not just its past, is done one day at a time — one input at a time. As the days and inputs accumulate and build upon one another, the business begins to improve.

2022 will bring a new highlight to celebrating the High Fives you are giving each other for jobs well done. Time to ramp up saying thanks to the folks around you who make a difference. The messages below were submitted by people across the company using HighFive@ FranklinBuildingSupply.com. Anyone can say thanks or good job using this easy tool. We welcome you to look for examples of great works that exemplify our keys to Making Building Easy: Wow (the amazing customer experience), Guide (smooth handoffs), Safe (all about watching out of each other), and Strive (continuously learning and improving). “I just checked out our sales per vehicle numbers for November and I am impressed! High Five goes out to our dispatcher, Byron Hinson, for keeping the wheels turning and making sure the trucks are fully loaded and routed properly. Nice job, Byron!” HIGH FIVES Celebrating Each Other

Once upon a time, the Treasure Valley was split into very clear lines. Homebuilders did not stray across the Ada and Canyon County lines. Our lumberyards in Boise and Caldwell didn’t either, except in rare circumstances for communities right on the border. To dispatchers of the 1990s and 2000s, Star, Idaho, was a sort of a no man’s land. Customers on both sides of the line would remain with the lumberyard on their side and balk at deliveries to their jobs from the “other” FBS yard. Today, of course, homebuilders stretch across multiple counties. The days of making decisions based on old parochial concerns are happily in the rearview mirror. The only thing that matters now is making deliveries to our customers on time and in full, regardless of where the truck started in the morning. That requires real-time balancing of drivers, equipment, inventory, and demand across county lines. Leading the charge to achieve this reality in western Idaho is Reuben Gutierrez, the new central dispatch supervisor. Reuben has the backing in this mission of Boise Yard Boss Amber Hall and Caldwell Yard Boss John Ward. The dispatchers who are figuring this out, day to day, are Gryffen Hanson and Micah Santos in Boise, and Matt Durham and Tyler Abrams in Caldwell. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE CUSTOMER IN DISPATCH DECISIONS

–Ben Thomas, McCall General Manager

“I wanted to give a High Five to our overhead door crew here at the Jerome location. With all of the changes and all of our struggles with getting material, Curtis Hansen and Bryan Stuart, along with the rest of the crew, have done an amazing job. They have both kept a great attitude and have gone above and beyond their duties as well as being a helping hand and a great resource for myself. They both come in daily willing/ready to work and give it their all and are the first to lend a helping hand when needed. High Five to the two of them!”

–Kale Black, Jerome

“I would like to give Juan Carlos a High Five. I have worked with Carlos over in Boise for about five years. I then transferred out to Caldwell, and shortly after I did, Carlos also transferred out to Caldwell. In the short time he has been here, he really has stepped up to the plate and become a leader in the yard. He shows up every day with a great attitude and a willingness to lead the team and teach the new guys how to be team players and keep them on track. He brings a lot to the table and is willing and wanting to learn new things and likes to push himself to be better every day. We are grateful to have him here. Hopefully people will look up to him and push themselves to be like him, I know I do myself.”

–Randy Forgy, Caldwell

“Just wanted to give Jeff Watson, Boise Cabinets, a High Five for helping out with extra safety admin burdens while new management was being placed. Jeff was my go-to guy on several injuries and also some safety protocols. Jeff was never too busy to answer questions, find out information, and help with documentation and peer reviews.”

–Mike Nelson, Safety Director

TOGETHER WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

All across the wide expanse of Idaho and up from Elko, Nevada, our employee-owners came together to provide Christmas joy for children in our communities.

It was your generosity that made this possible. When we delivered the hundreds of toys to the U.S. Marines for the annual Toys for Tots drive, they were stunned by the size of Franklin Building Supply’s generosity. When we announced this charitable campaign, your response was, “Let’s Go!”

THE NATURAL

The votes are in! The winner of our Franklin Fishing Kid People’s Choice Award is Sophie Enochson.

Sophie’s dad, Joey, who works as a manager of the design center and finish operations in Boise, says that Sophie is a natural fisherwoman. “She casts well and has a knack for fishing that amazes me,” said the proud dad. She also got the most votes and won the crown for 2021. Way to go, Sophie!

SPOTLIGHT ON BRAD DAVIS Setting Franklin Building Supply Apart

For five and a half years, Brad has been with Franklin Building Supply and is thrilled that he made the decision to join the team. He is the receiving lead team member at the Boise yard and is passionate about his job and the team members he works with every day. “The most challenging part of my job is dealing with shifted rail cars, and ironically, my favorite part of my career happens to be the way in which my forklift abilities are challenged with these rail cars,” Brad tells us. Operating machinery like this is surely no easy task and takes tons of skill and practice to get it right. LEAN, a series of five principles designed to improve efficiency in the workplace, includes defining value, mapping the value stream, creating flow, using a pull system, and pursuing perfection. Brad feels that by reducing the amount of physical

paperwork involved in the receiving process and going more and more electronic, LEAN is properly exercised. When he’s not at work, Brad loves spending time out in the mountains as much as possible. Whether it’s hiking or snowshoeing, anything that gets him outdoors and moving is exciting to him. “My biggest passion is being a father to my beautiful daughter Skyler. She brings a lot of happiness to my life and a drive to excel at anything I do. All I want is to have my little girl look up to her daddy and to know she can always grow, learn, and never stop reaching for her goals,” Brad says, Brad, we thank you for making Franklin Building Supply an enjoyable and successful experience for our clients. Your devotion, friendliness, and professionalism set you apart, and we appreciate you!
