For several years now, we have been focusing on making our aspirational tagline to “Make Building Easy” a reality for our customers. Making building easy will never be a destination we reach. Making building easy is an ambition, a commitment, a vision to set ourselves apart from our competition and deliver an experience that adds more value for customers over time, brings them back project after project, and prompts them to share their experience with others. From one perspective, 2021 is proving to be one of our most challenging years yet to deliver on this lofty goal. When we think of making building easy, we assume that includes having everything a customer could want and getting it to them whenever they want it. This interpretation is understandable, but it’s the most simplistic interpretation. It’s also the easiest version to deliver when the markets, including commodities and supply chains, are stable and operating normally. Of course, in 2021, the commodities markets (dimensional lumber, studs, and OSB) remains volatile (significant price changes over days or weeks) and historically high (3–4 times normal costs). In addition, global supply chains are all in some form of upheaval due to the lingering effects of the 2020 pandemic year, uneven recoveries, surging demand, and transportation woes.

our approach to communicating in this challenging season — being proactive and transparent — is completely within our control. It’s admittedly harder than simply being able to say yes to everything a customer wants, but it’s actually a deeper and more meaningful way to add value and build trust. Let’s make 2021 a year when we continue to set ourselves apart from our competition. Let’s embrace the challenge to grow in how we proactively and honestly engage in difficult or critical conversations with customers. We cannot tell them what they want to hear, and we cannot give them everything they want whenever they want it, but we can take full control of communicating in a way that maintains their respect. Sometime in 2022, when we expect market conditions and supply chains to stabilize, customers will reassess all their supplier relationships. The winners of those reassessments won’t be the suppliers who got them everything they needed whenever they needed it — no one will have been able to do that in 2021 — but the winners will be the suppliers who cared enough about them to be proactive and transparent in their communication, suppliers who they still respect, and suppliers who they grew to trust even more. We can and should be that supplier. Let’s make building easy by being better than anyone else at communication in 2021, even communication about all the things we cannot do. We’ll reap the benefits for years to come as customers, new and old, recognize that we are the best building partner they could have whether in times of plenty or times of want.

For nearly 45 years, the Boise Door Shop has delivered superior quality doors and trim to Treasure Valley customers. Recently, however, they’ve been a bit “off the hook.” Manager Trent McKnight has urged the door shop crew to “keep it reel,” stressing that “good things come to those who bait.” You could say the door shop, in addition to being the home of the best doors and trim in Boise, is planning to wiggle their way to the big prizes in Franklin’s Fishing Derby. Here are a few of the door shop stars. With more than seven years under his belt, Doug Cox is a fully vested employee owner and a darned good driver. Here’s an interesting fact: Doug has never fished in his life. How is that possible? Seems amazing since he spends so much time outside four-wheeling and geocaching. We all challenge Doug to end the drought this year and cast his first line. FISHY BUSINESS AT BOISE DOOR

Jill Flabel has been a rock star at the door shop for 4 1/2 years. Jill is an account coordinator, so she always has her finger on the line of the business. Jill says she hasn’t fished since she was a child, but the lure of prizes has her eyeing Idaho’s Free Fishing Day on June 12. She

“Dallas Sorenson noticed that our miter saw in the warehouse had a blade guard that had stopped rotating. To operate the saw, people would have to hold the guard with one hand and trigger with the other. He declared it unsafe, tagged it out, and arranged for it to be sent out for repair. When it returned, he took the time to reinstall it so it operated safely. I know this inconvenienced us for a while, but it was the safe, intelligent thing to do. Way to go, Dallas!”

Gabe Taylor says his style of fishing is “lazy- man bobber.” We can relate, Gabe; there is nothing like relaxing at the end of the dock with a pole in the water and a cooler by your side. Gabe earns all the relaxing time he can manage after his hard work in receiving at the door shop. Let’s call his fishing this year “reel therapy.”

Daniel Loseke is loaded with desire to catch fish. In fact, he’s caught more fish in more states than most people. This native of Nebraska, who went to college in Texas and came to the door shop after a stint in McCall,

is itching to change our company motto to “We Make Fishing Easy.” When he’s not dreaming of fish, Daniel keeps busy handling returns for the door shop.

HEADING HOME

Shane Amen Started in Boise — But Didn’t Stay There!

Building employee-owner, working as a truss designer. They see each other often. “In fact,” Shane says, “we have lunch together almost every day.” It’s a tightknit environment, and that’s good, because no two days look the same — although that can be enjoyable, too. “I love helping people who come in and need assistance or advice,” Shane says. “I love having someone who wants to build a deck and showing them how I’d lay it out or get the right height.” Shane’s most memorable moment came when a customer, having exhausted all other options, showed up at the Burley store looking for corbels. “We all learned something that day,” Shane says, explaining that corbels are a type of exterior decorative bracket. “They weren’t in stock, of course, but I ordered them and the customer picked them up a few days later!” When he isn’t helping customers, Shane’s outside fishing and camping with his wife and their two dachshunds. They also love to travel and recently took a trip to Hawaii — their first vacation ever of that kind!

Most Americans who grow up in rural areas are familiar with the “move to town” dilemma that many Idahoans face. Shane Amen had the same experience when he started working Inside Sales in our Boise location.

Sales. But he’s no longer in Boise ...

“One thing that sets Franklin Building Supply apart is how many opportunities it gives us employee-owners,” Shane says. “It’s statewide, so if you have to move, they can often find you work close to wherever you’re headed.” In Shane’s case, that final destination was the Burley area, where he grew up. “Now, I get to see people I know all the time,” he says. “I see guys from high school who now work for contractors, and I feel like this store is just a group of friends and family.”

He pauses for a second, then adds, “Friends and legitimately family, too.” He’s referring to the fact that his brother is another Franklin
