HEALTH & WELLNESS LIVING LIFE WITHOUT BACK PAIN

VERSE OF THE MONTH “ “ “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17

For some, back pain is a daily occurrence that dictates the way you live your life. Every movement, every motion is determined by the pain in your back. Standing, sitting, laying down, driving, walking or running — the pain persists. Physical Therapy for Back Pain. Physical therapy offers a long- term solution to back pain by using targeted exercises that focus on the cause of the pain. Through a combination of strength and flexibility training that focuses on muscle development and joint movement, physical therapy can address the underlying cause of the pain and significantly improve your quality of life. Understanding the Why and How. There are a lot of different reasons that back pain can develop. Even when you break down injuries, whether from overuse or athletic pursuits, there are different problems that can develop. Sprains and strains are common, but so are issues with the vertebrae, blood flow, and even concerns regarding the spinal nerves. You might be amazed to discover the different factors that could be influencing your back health. Such as: • Your personal level of physical activity, including how often you exercise and the intensity of your typical workouts. • The types of shoes that you wear, in addition to how frequently you walk in different types of shoes, particularly shoes that lack support or those with high heels. • Prolonged engagement in sedentary behavior, including sitting at a desk for eight hours or more consecutive days of the week, or spending free time on the couch or otherwise relaxed.

ability to overcome back pain by strengthening the vertebrae and improving blood flow and nutrient disbursement throughout the back. When you are inactive, blood flow can actually become impeded, and this can have a negative effect on the overall health of your back and spine. How Physical Therapy Helps. Anyone who has struggled with back pain

can tell you plain and simple: When your back is hurting, there is no way to pretend that it isn’t. Simply going from sedentary activity to being active and healthy isn’t an option — at least not so easily. It takes time and effort, and when back pain is obstructing you from getting started, it requires help. Physical therapy can help you overcome back pain by giving you the knowledge and support necessary to help your back feel better, givingyou theoption toget off the couchandpush yourself to reach new goals. Working with a licensed and experienced physical therapist ensures that you do not take on too much too quickly, but instead are guided through the process of healing with gradual steps. CLINIC NEWS

As we celebrated National Physical Therapy Month during October, it’s so evident our staff cares about our patients as if they were our own family. We decided to ask some of our therapists, “Why Physical Therapy?” to hear their own take on why they love it so much. Here were some of their answers! Bridget Hathcock, DPT: “To impact lives by helping patients return to the most important things in their life. To provide a mission field to plant seeds of God’s Word. Because of the opportunity to build a small business. To provide jobs for individuals in our community. Because of the opportunity to mentor youth in our community. To think outside the box and evaluate how we can best serve our community.” WHY PHYSICAL THERAPY?

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY! Our Physical Therapist, Kevin Hughes, and his wife Kathy added a new addition to the family, baby Sasha! Congratulations Kathy, Kevin, big sister Mia, & big brother Samuel!

CELEBRATE OUR REHAB TECHNICIANS! You see them every day, and our rehab technicians add such a fun spirit to our clinics. They’re an integral part of our business and daily appointments! Our technicians carry out important duties, like assisting therapists in administeringpatient care, setting uppatients onmodalities, cleaning equipment between patients, and helping with administrative tasks, too! Thank you to Taylor, Devon, Laura Lyn, and George! We are so grateful for you!

PATIENT SUCCESS SPOTLIGHT

Krystal Nestlehutt, DPT: “To hear patients tell you they did something they haven’t been able to in years, like play outside with their grandchild.”

“Home for the Holidays - Because of Physical Therapy!” Hear fromDawn Smith, a recent patient who just completed her last day of Physical Therapy after a long process of recovery from a head injury. This is her story! “My name is Dawn Smith. I was in an accident on June 27, 2020. I was riding a four wheeler and it malfunctioned, flipped and landed on my head. I had four skull fractures, it brokemy collarbone where I now have two plates and

Jeffrey Wessel, DPT: “To watch patients progress and see them participate in activities they love doing again, and to know them better as individuals every day.” Morgan Boatman, PTA:

“To get people back to healthy, active lifestyles in order to improve their quality of life.”

12 screws, and I have five cracked ribs. I was air lifted to Navicent Hospital in Macon and stayed there for 5 weeks in a medical induced coma. Then, I was air lifted to Shepherd Center in Atlanta where I had brain surgery to relieve pressure on my brain. 6.6 liters of blood were removed off my brain. Me being hard-headed, I pulled a breathing tube out of my throat, climbed over the side of my bed, and fell. I went back to the hospital for two weeks, was sent back to Shepherd Center and taken out out of my coma after 13 weeks. I had no use of anything. I couldn’t hold a fork, I couldn’t tell you what my name was, I couldn’t walk. I knew I had kids and a husband, but I didn’t know where they were. I couldn’t move my shoulder because of the surgery, and I didn’t know why my head hurt so bad. They told me I would be in a wheelchair up to 9 months, and I laughed. I was put in a wheelchair and started physical therapy. They wanted to sendme to Pathways in Atlanta for 12 weeks, but I told them I could not be a mom from Atlanta. So, a few people helpedme find this absolutely wonderful place, FYZICAL in Cordele. I started at the Vienna clinic and transferred to Cordele to come three days a week. I walked in with a cane. When I leave today, I am leaving with nothing but my children. When I first came home, I had to hold onto everything that was near me. Now, I don’t hold onto anything. I can use stairs at my own will. I can get up and go as I please. I can walk up stairs by myself without having to hold onto the banister, without holding onto anything. Everyone has been top notch. Jeffrey doesn’t stop until he knows that you can do it, even when you think “please stop!” He keeps finding obstacles that are going to push your boundaries and make you better. Honestly and truly, you get what you need to have a normal everyday life. When I came home, I couldn’t stand in the kitchen to cook. Last night, I cooked a full meal. My speech therapist got me to where I can know my husband’s phone number again. That sounds crazy, but it’s a big accomplishment when you’ve been where I have. I owe my ability to get out to the therapists. I owe my life to God Himself, and even when I’ve been ready to give up, my therapists keep believing in me and encouraging me, saying “we can do this.”

Karen Thompson, PTA: “To help others return to their best life possible - it’s so rewarding!” Megan Davis, PTA: “To

see the smile on someone’s face when they have accomplished a task they haven’t been able to do for awhile, such as walking or making their first full revolution on a bike after a knee replacement surgery.”

Kevin Hughes, DPT: “Because of the amount of time I get to spend with my patients, and the opportunity to empower patients to learn how to treat themselves through movement and exercise.”

Kim Bertelson, PTA: “To assist patients to return to their active lifestyles completely pain free.”

Stacey Hathcock, DPT: “Seeing a patient smile

when they get back to doing something they thought they would never do again.”

Over the last few weeks, we’ve made some drastic changes at our Greer clinic. With a new paint color, new floors, and some rearranging to optimize our space for more services, we are so excited and grateful for the opportunities this will provide to help more patients in even more ways! We prioritize providing big-city technology in our small town so everyone can receive appropriate Physical Therapy services to improve their quality of life and help them participate in what’s important to them.
