Build Your Confidence and Move Toward Success

In 5 Easy Steps

In last month’s newsletter, I wrote about how simply working harder will not get us as close to our goals as we would like. Instead, we should be looking for ways to work smarter. However, after sending that newsletter out, many readers responded that while they agreed that working smarter and finding innovative ways of achieving success is a good way forward, they personally lacked the confidence to do so. So, for this edition, I thought I would share five ways that I’ve found help people gain the confidence that will put them on the path to success. Eliminate Negativity Negativity is very contagious. If you spend the majority of your time around people who are negative, it’s very easy to become negative as well. So, it’s best to just stop spending so much time with people who constantly bring you down. This is obviously easier said than done, considering that some of the negative people you know might be family members or really close friends. That said, I think the freedom you feel when you’re not around them all the time is worth it. Give Compliments When someone compliments you, it feels pretty great. However, giving someone else a compliment can feel just as great, and you have a lot more control over giving compliments than you do over receiving them. Complimenting someone on their great work, how they’re dressed, or anything else worth shouting out creates a cycle that will end up elevating your own confidence too. When you sincerely compliment someone, they’ll feel more inclined to compliment you, which provides a boost to both their and your confidence. Treat Your Body Well It doesn’t matter if it’s 15 pushups every morning or getting a salad instead of french fries, just knowing that you’re doing something that benefits your body can impact how you feel about yourself. Once you really get going with

the habit, you’ll start to feel better physically and be in better shape, which will, in turn, boost your self- esteem and confidence. Develop Your Brain Our brains are naturally hungry and want to be filled with knowledge. In my experience, the best source for that knowledge is books. When you feed your brain by reading instead of, say, watching whatever is on Netflix, the easier it is to learn things, and you’ll become more confident in your mental acumen. I can speak

from experience on this one — I went from only reading 1–2 books per year to reading 1–2 books per month. The enhanced sense of confidence is real. Help Somebody Every Day It feels amazing to help people, and while we might all be quick to say that we know that’s true, how many of you actively seek the satisfaction that comes from helping others? By actually finding ways to help others on a daily basis, instead of just taking care of yourself, you’ll feel better about how you spend your days, and your confidence will increase because of it. While you don’t have to do all five of these steps right away, think about how you could integrate some of them into your daily routine. Chances are, trying even one of them will get you that much closer to having the confidence you need to achieve your goals.

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM LIKE A CELEBRITY

3 GIFT-GIVING TIPS That Won’t Kill Your Savings

WITH THESE 3 HOT WINTER DRINKS

Ah, the holidays. It’s a time of sweet treats, family, and giving back — and sometimes giving a little too much. When it comes to the perfect holiday gift, many people spend too much money. The average American spends nearly $1,000 on gifts during the December holidays alone! It’s possible to cut back and make it to January without major debt. Here’s how. Check your list — twice! The list is going to be your secret weapon to tackling the holidays with your savings still intact. Start by writing down the name of every person you’d like to get a gift for. Now, with the exception of your immediate family members, narrow the names down to your top five — top 10 if you’re really popular. Now, place the names of the people who didn’t make the cut into a second list. If you still feel the need to do something for them, send homemade cookies or a handwritten note instead of purchasing something. This limits how much you actually have to spend! Think beyond

What do Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga, Angelina Jolie, Taylor Swift, and Khloé Kardashian have in common? Yes, they’re all high-profile celebrities, of course, but they’re also big fans of hot tea.

According to the entertainment website Yaay, Angelina Jolie

likes to make her own garlic tea by steeping fresh cloves in hot water, and Lady Gaga is such a big tea lover that she takes a tea set with her on tour. These famous women might be onto a health and beauty secret because aside from being delicious, tea is a great way to boost your immune system and fend off illnesses. Drinking hot tea, or another immune-boosting drink in place of hot chocolate, will still give you the cozy winter vibes you crave without compromising your health. An easy drink for beginners is lemon-ginger tea , which is a spin-off of Khloé Kardashian’s favorite drink. Ginger is a key ingredient here because it’s anti- inflammatory, raises the immune system, and may even help fight cancer. You can make lemon-ginger syrup by layering lemon slices, fresh ginger, and raw honey in a jar and letting it sit in the fridge overnight. The next morning, just add a few spoonfuls of the concoction to your hot water and you’ll have instant tea! Homemade chai tea is another delicious option that will wow you and your guests this winter. There are thousands of chai recipes out there, but MinimalistBaker.com offers a simple and tasty one that’s made with cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger, black tea, pepper, and dairy-free milk. If you don’t want to grind the spices yourself, you can buy a premade blend. Chai gives you all of the ginger benefits with the added bonus of cardamom, which is said to have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Last but not least, if you’re more of a latte drinker than a tea drinker, try golden milk ! This soothing drink is a darling of health food fanatics because it features honey (a disease-fighting powerhouse ingredient) and turmeric (an immune-booster that lowers cholesterol, combats arthritis, and helps prevent cancer). WellPlated.com offers a delicious recipe that pairs those two ingredients with almond milk, almond butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and ginger for a satisfying nightcap.

store-bought or expensive items. Sure, everyone wants this holiday season’s “it” item, but sometimes the best gifts don’t even come wrapped under the tree. Instead, look to your own talents as a clue to what you should give. If you’re a great crafter, create something unique for the people on your list. If you can

offer the gift of time, provide a free night of babysitting for your friends with kids or an experience at the local theater. These gifts have a bonus factor: Recipients love the gift when they open it, and they love it when they get to use it! Set a budget — and stick to it. Setting a holiday budget ensures you only spend what you can afford. It also narrows down your search. If you choose to buy your neighbor something, but they aren’t your top priority, set their budget at a lower level, like $25–$50. If you have a sibling who has had a rough year and you’d like to make their holidays a little brighter, bump their budget up. This narrows the focus of what you’re looking for so you don’t stumble into something you can’t afford. Ultimately, it’s the spirit of giving during the holidays that makes them so rewarding. With a little ingenuity, you can be generous and avoid the stress of excess debt come January.

In Georgia, You Can Get Pulled Over For Going the Speed Limit

Just because something has been a law for a while doesn’t necessarily mean it’s very well- known or widely followed. Such is the case for Georgia’s “slowpoke” law, which lets the police ticket you for going the speed limit, provided you’re doing a few other things as well. The Georgia Senate OK'd House Bill 459 — more commonly known as the slowpoke law — back in 2014. According to an article published on AJC.com shortly thereafter, this law allows authorities to ticket drivers who lollygag in the left lane and make it impossible for drivers to pass them. Say you’re out on Interstate 75 cruising along at a good pace when you come upon a semitruck going considerably slower than your cruising speed in the right lane. No big deal, right? All you have to do is pass them in the left lane without having to slow down too much, if at all. But, what if there is another vehicle in the left lane that is matching the

semitruck’s speed rather than passing it? That effectively cuts you off from the road ahead, leaves you understandably frustrated, and, in the state of Georgia, leaves the driver in the left lane open to a penalty — even if they were going the speed limit. While it might seem strange to ticket someone for following the law, the slowpoke law actually makes a lot of sense in practice. Rather than penalizing drivers for going the speed limit, the law penalizes them for disrupting the flow of traffic, which can arguably create conditions for accidents just as much as excessive speeding can. If most people are being honest, they probably go much faster than the speed limit when in the left lane on the highway. If you insist that you don’t ever go above the speed limit, well, make sure you’re not blocking traffic in the left lane — it could come back to bite you.

Touring Cobb County

One marker of a vibrant, lively community that will continue to grow and develop well into the future is a robust education system. That’s why Kennesaw State University, which is based right here in Cobb County, is worth shouting out. As a school that offers nearly 150 undergraduate and postgraduate programs and has seen significant growth in its student body over the past few years, you can be sure that KSU will enhance our community for decades to come. One of the things that’s most remarkable about KSU is just how fast it’s grown since its founding. The Board of Regents of Georgia’s university system chartered KSU (first called Kennesaw Junior College) in 1963, but it didn’t officially open to students until 1966, and its initial enrollment was just 1,014 students. In just a little over five decades, KSU has become the third-largest public university in Georgia, behind only Georgia State University and the University of Georgia, which were chartered in 1913 and 1785, respectively. KSU’s enrollment in fall 2020 was 40,900 students, which was an 8% increase from the year before. That would be remarkable in any year, but in

the midst of a pandemic, it’s an incredible vote of confidence in our county’s university as it continues to prepare students to enter the workforce. This fall, KSU also had the largest freshman class of any university in the state. Kennesaw State University’s engineering, education, and information technology programs ranked among some of the best in the nation, according to the U.S. News and World Report. It is currently ranked as a Carnegie-designated doctoral research institution (R2), which means that it is a part of a select group of universities with high amounts of research activity. Only 6% of universities nationwide have either R1 or R2 status. Though a lot of Owls football games were canceled this year due to the pandemic, meaning the public can’t support and celebrate the school in one of the best ways anyone can celebrate their local university, we can still be thankful that KSU continues to send confident, educated students out into the workforce. We’re lucky to have them as a part of the community.
