FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Spotlight on Anahi Cordoba

First impressions matter, especially at a law firm. When someone comes to us, I want them to have a good experience from start to finish. Having a good receptionist, someone who can make people feel welcome and comfortable from the very first phone call, is vital. That’s why I’m glad to have Anahi Cordoba at our front desk. She has decades of experience as a receptionist and always comes with a smile, ready to help folks however she can. –Ramiro Rodriguez, Jr. “You don’t have to think about yourself. You have to think about the people who come here. They’re sick and they’re looking for help. You have to put yourself in their shoes.” I got this advice from a supervisor of my first job almost 40 years ago. I was part of an administrative team at a hospital, working with patients. This advice has really helped me during my career as a receptionist. As a receptionist, I’m often the first person someone sees when they are hurt or have a problem. This can be stressful, but I do my best to empathize with what people are going through and help them have a good experience with us. After the hospital job, I spent many years working for a large food company and an insurance company. I can say that working at GA Injury Advocates is my favorite job. I love it here! Everyone here is unique and

My years of working have given me the experience to leave my personal problems at the door when I come in to work. Fortunately, I do not have too many problems to deal with. I moved to the United States from Argentina and am raising a teenage son. I love to share things with him. As a mother, I try to give my child all I’ve learned, and I also see that times have changed, so I try to change with them and teach my son well. This can be difficult to teach at times, but I try. There are a lot of parks near our apartment, and we love to go out and ride our bikes. Every time we go out riding, I fall, but I don’t care. I do it because he loves to ride his bike and Mom has to be there with him. We also like to drive to different cities, park, and walk around, getting to know the city and the people who live there. I want to spend as much time as possible with my son so he knows that his mom is there for him. I also want our clients to feel this kind of support at the firm. We want them to know that someone has their backs and will listen to them. Even if someone comes in with a problem in an area of law we don’t practice, like a family case or a criminal case, we can help them find another firm they can count on to take care of them. People know they can find the help that they need here, and I’m glad to be part of providing that help every day.

brings something different to the team. I have always wanted to help people, and being at a firm that handles personal injury cases allows me to do that. When I first started at GA Injury Advocates, I remembered the advice from my former supervisor. The people who are coming to our office are hurt and scared. They’re looking for help. I try and do my best every day because I am the first face people see when they come into the office and the first voice they hear when someone calls us for help. If I am in a bad mood or give the wrong answer to a question, then people will think the firm is not serious about helping them. I have the responsibility to represent the firm well and make a good first impression.

AN INTRODUCTION TO TURMERIC’S HEALTH BENEFITS THE POWER OF THE GOLDEN SPICE People have raved about many superfoods over the past few decades, but one that’s garnered notable attention is turmeric. Fittingly known as the golden spice due to its orange-yellow hue, turmeric is famous for being a crucial part of Indian cuisine, ayurvedic medicine, and Chinese medicine. But does turmeric actually help people? And if so, how? Let’s start with the basics to find out. What’s in turmeric? First, it’s important to know what the spice contains and why researchers are so excited about it. Turmeric is packed with a chemical known as curcumin, which has been shown to provide anti-inflammatory effects, pain relief, antioxidants, and a decrease in the risk of cancer. Pro Tip: You should not consume excessive amounts of turmeric if you take medication that has blood-clotting effects, such as aspirin. However, a moderate amount typically doesn’t react with these or other medications and has many other benefits. Can it improve joint health? In many cases, yes! The Arthritis Foundation recommends taking a 400–600-milligram tablet of turmeric up to three times daily. Multiple studies cite turmeric’s ability to reduce inflammation and relieve arthritis pain, and one study even notes that turmeric seemed to work just as well as ibuprofen (Advil) for people with arthritis in their knees. Participants in that study took 800 milligrams of turmeric every day. Can it help the liver? Yes. One of the spice’s most notable characteristics is its powerful antioxidant abilities. Antioxidants play an important function in our bodies. The average person is exposed to refined and processed foods, smoking, environmental pollution, and chemicals found in pesticides and drugs. Turmeric can protect the liver from damage due to these toxins, which also aids those who take strong medications known to cause long-term liver damage. Can it decrease symptoms of hay fever and depression? Some symptoms, yes. The curcumin in turmeric can help reduce hay fever symptoms like sneezing, itching, runny nose, and congestion. When used in tandem with antidepressants, turmeric may help reduce symptoms of depression.

MAKE YOUR GAME NIGHTS EXTRA SPECIAL WITH A FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT ROOM

Families around the world are finding new ways to spend time with each other, and their homes are changing accordingly. Whether your family members are video gamers, movie enthusiasts, or board game fans, everyone can benefit from having a dedicated entertainment room. Here are some tips for putting one together. Use your space wisely. Consider the advantages and challenges of your available space. You don’t want small spaces to feel cramped, and you don’t want large spaces to feel empty. If your room is small, then design the space to serve multiple purposes, like installing a bar with a TV on the opposite wall. If your room is large, then why not have two or more TVs to let visitors play multiple games or watch different shows? A projector can also be used to maximize a room’s space. It allows you and your guests to utilize an entire wall without requiring much physical space. Set up surround sound. Whether you’re using your entertainment room for movies, music, video games, or all of the above, investing in high-quality speakers will pay off instantly. You can set them up around the room for clearer, more immersive sound for movies and games, and by spacing out each speaker, you can eliminate cord clutter and tangle. Soundproof your space. Trying to impress your guests with great sound doesn’t mean that your entire neighborhood has to hear what you’re watching! Soundproofing not only helps shield your neighbors from action game explosions and booming movie scores, but it also improves the sound quality in the room. Thick curtains and carpets, wall- mounted foam panels, or freestanding acoustic panels work for basic soundproofing, but if you plan to utilize your space every day and night, then consider hiring a contractor to help estimate materials and cost for a more sophisticated soundproof space. Have great lighting. There’s nothing more inviting than a well-lit space, and this also applies to your entertainment room. Whether you’re playing a board game or putting together puzzles with the whole family, mood lighting can make the experience feel even more cozy and special. Try experimenting with different, stylish lamps or overhead fixtures to light up your space.

There are many benefits to using turmeric in your weekly meal routine. Try out some Indian or Chinese recipes or prepare some Instagram- worthy golden milk. In whatever you make, enjoy the rich flavor combinations turmeric offers!

Could You Really Steal the Declaration of Independence?

“I’m gonna steal the Declaration of Independence.”

These security measures are overcome by Gates and his friends in the movie, but security at the National Archives has changed and improved a lot over the last 16 years. For example, a key part of the plan to steal the Declaration in “National Treasure” involves one character using a laser pointer hidden in a video camera to activate the heat sensors around the document. This wouldn’t be possible today. In 2010, the National Archives banned taking photos and videos because the light from camera flashes can damage old documents. Other modern obstacles include the case housing, ballistics- resistant titanium, and advanced technology monitoring the document. Even if a thief got as lucky as Gates did in “National Treasure,” their efforts wouldn’t result in much. An artifact like the Declaration of Independence would be too “hot” to ever sell, and you couldn’t exactly show it off in your living room. Unless there really is an invisible map left on the back by the Founding Fathers, we say it’s best to leave the Declaration of Independence where it is.

This iconic line from the 2004 film “National Treasure” is uttered by Nicolas Cage’s character, Ben Gates, who intends to steal the historical document in order to protect it from thieves. What follows is a cinematic romp through the history of the American Revolution. “National Treasure” is a must-watch while you’re waiting for the fireworks to start on the Fourth of July, and we recently found ourselves asking, “How hard would it be to really steal the Declaration of Independence?” In a 2004 interview with MTV, Susan Cooper, a spokesperson for the National Archives, where the document is held, said that it would be “very hard … impossible” to steal the Declaration of Independence. Cooper explained that during the day, the Declaration is protected by “bulletproof glass and plastic laminate, surrounded by armed guards and monitored by camera and a computerized system. And as an extra precaution, the document is taken to an underground vault at night.”

The Power of the Golden Spice Could You Steal the Declaration of Independence? The Secret to Delicious Grilled Veggies A Tour of Marietta

In the early days of Marietta, fire safety was left in the hands of volunteers. The city relied on bucket brigades, which were teams of volunteers who would pass buckets of water hand-to-hand from a water source to the fire to fight any blazes. After a massive fire in 1854 destroyed most of Marietta Square, it was clear the town needed more serious fire protection. That’s when the Marietta Fire Department was officially formed. Today, the Marietta fire station is located at 112 Haynes St. and is home to a very special piece of Marietta history: the Marietta Fire Museum. This free museum houses over 160 years of the Marietta Fire Department’s proud history. Guests can take a look at the old steamers and fire trucks used to fight fires in Marietta, as well as antique equipment, helmets from around the world, and stories of heroic firefighters. The pride and joy of the Marietta Fire Department is an 1879 Silsby Steamer fondly referred to as the “Aurora.”

Purchased by the city in 1879, the Aurora is one of five Silsby steamers still in existence. The fact that the Aurora still exists at all is close to miraculous. During World War II, any steel machinery that wasn’t actively in use was melted down and used in the war effort. The horse- drawn steamer had been replaced by a motorized fire truck in the 1920s, but the Aurora was still on display at the fire department. To protect this piece of history, firefighters dismantled the Aurora and hid it so it wouldn’t be melted down. The story of the Aurora is just one of many memorable stories waiting to be shared at the Marietta Fire Museum. The museum is typically open for self-guided tours on weekdays, and you can schedule a visit for a guided tour with a firefighter for a small group if you do so at least a week in advance. However, the museum has bene closed to the public and tours have recently been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. Check the website for updates: MariettaGa.gov/189/Fire-Museum.
