Look in the Fish’s Mouth
A Miracle Parable to Learn From
Many anglers will be out casting their lures this month, looking for the catch of the summer — or at least a great fish tale to tell. One of my favorite fish tales isn’t about the “Big One”; rather it’s a parable
the gardener doesn’t have to do much work. They plant the seed and do some tending, but by and large, Mother Nature does the heavy lifting. The moral of the story is, though, that the miracle of the tree will not happen without you doing the work of planting the seed. A botanist can probably tell you the precise processes at work that turn the seed into a seedling and eventually a full-grown tree that bears fruit year after year while feeding the birds and bees, but the sum is greater than the parts. It still feels miraculous to most of us. In order to witness that or any miracle, we have to do the work to get it going. Rohn talks about surrounding yourself with people who are committed to doing whatever it takes to make miracles happen in their own lives. That doesn’t mean they sit around and wish and hope.
right out of the Bible, retold by one of my favorite personal development coaches, Jim Rohn. Though he passed away in 2009, Rohn was such a charismatic storyteller and funny teacher that much of his material lives on. Search his name and “Jesus the Miracle Worker” on YouTube, and you’ll hear the full version of the story that inspired this month’s cover. (It doesn’t matter if you believe in Jesus, something else, or nothing; the lesson still applies.)
As Rohn relays, one of Jesus’ disciples came to him and told him it was time to pay his taxes, but he didn’t have any money. Jesus responded, “No problem. Just go fishing.” Since this disciple, Paul, was a fisherman, that was an easy solution for him. Jesus went on to tell Paul to look in the mouth of the fish he caught. So, Paul goes to the water and casts his lure and comes up with a fish. He opens its mouth and inside he finds coins in the exact amount he owes. A miracle! And what is a miracle? It’s something that happens that we can’t quite explain. While you may not have netted a fish with a mouthful of coins, you can probably relate easily to Rohn’s next example of a miracle: planting a seed from which a tree grows. The thing is that, to make the tree grow,
Instead, they wake up early and work hard. They read books to learn. They strengthen their skills and expand their networks. They do whatever it takes. And then they bear the fruits of that labor. Often their hard work is returned multiple times over. Things align. Stuff just works out. But it’s not fate or good fortune, as easy as it might be to chalk it up to that. It’s really the work they’re putting in to plant that initial seed and then another and another.
You might not think to look in a fish’s mouth for coins, but if you keep casting your lure, you’re sure to net a big one sometime!

4 SUMMER BLOCKBUSTERS FOR THEWHOLE FAMILY
LAWN GAMES FOR FAMILY SUMMER FUN
Summer is back, and, thanks to the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, so are movies! This June and July, a host of family films will hit theaters and streaming services. Here are four to put on your must-watch list. ‘Vivo’ — Friday, June 4 (Theaters) If you loved “Hamilton” and your kids enjoyed the live-action “Mary Poppins,” don’t miss “Vivo”! This film tells the story of a musical Capuchin monkey who makes the journey from Cuba to Miami, Florida, to see his name in lights. It’s all about friendship and adventure and is the first-ever musical from Sony Pictures. It also features original songs from the “Hamilton” writer and star from “Mary Poppins,” Lin-Manuel Miranda. ‘Luca’ — Friday, June 18 (Disney+)
The warm summer sun may be enough to beckon your family outdoors, but lawn games will guarantee hours of fun outside. If you’re handy, there are plenty of great lawn games you can make yourself. If not, buy an off-the-shelf alternative and enjoy the easy setup. Giant Jenga: Easy DIY All you need to build a giant Jenga tower are two-by-fours that are cut to length. If you’re handy with a saw, you can do this at home. If not, ask to have the wood cut at your local lumberyard. Be sure to sand down the edges before stacking the boards to create a classic Jenga tower! For extra fun, pick a few paint colors and paint each board. Visit
ABeautifulMess.com/make-this- giant-jenga to see a complete set of instructions. Buy: Skip the project and buy GoSports Giant Wooden Toppling Tower online, which retails for about $70 and stacks over 5 feet high.
“Luca” will transport you to two places: a beach town in Italy and a world where magical sea monsters walk the land! This beautifully animated film tells the coming-of-age story of a young boy with a monsterous secret who just wants to eat gelato and ride scooters with his friends. The heartwarming film is a Disney and Pixar collaboration and will premiere on Disney+ on June 18 without an additional fee for subscribers.
Classic Horseshoes: Intermediate DIY Tossing horseshoes is a great way to pass an afternoon. To play, you’ll just need to set up two sandpits in your yard. Get a handful of horseshoes, and you’re ready to go! Many DIY plans are available online, including one from HousefulOfHandmade.com/ultimate-diy- horseshoe-pit. Buy: Check out the kid-friendly rubber horseshoe set from Wayfair. com, which requires no installation, can be used indoors or alongside your outdoor game, and is safe for younger children. Cornhole: Advanced DIY The humble beanbag may be the most versatile backyard game piece and is the star of the popular game commonly known as cornhole. To build your own cornhole set, you’ll need a couple of sheets of 1/2-inch-thick plywood along with two-by-fours, some hardware, and a variety of tools including a drill, jigsaw, and sander. Visit DIYPete. com/cornhole-board-plans to get both written and video instructions. Buy: Ready to play ASAP? Cornhole sets are available from many large retailers around summertime, or you can order a customized set featuring your favorite team, family name, or characters from your favorite movies by looking at Etsy.com. Whether you buy or DIY, remember to have fun and always supervise your children while playing outdoors, especially when it comes to yard games!
‘Cinderella’ — Friday, July 16 (Theaters) We’ve already had live-action versions of “The Jungle Book,” “The Lion King,” and “Beauty and the Beast,” but now, Disney is at it again! The latest live-action version of “Cinderella” is a musical rom-com starring Camila Cabello, Idina Menzel, Pierce Brosnan, and John Mulaney, among others. ‘Jungle Cruise’ — Friday, July 30 (Theaters) Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt will join forces this summer in “Jungle Cruise,” a live-action Disney adventure flick. The movie follows a researcher named Dr. Lily Houghton as she travels down the Amazon river to hunt for a tree that has healing powers. Skipper Frank Wolff is her guide, but before long, things get sketchy and, as Disney puts it, “their fate — and mankind’s — hangs in the balance.” These release dates are subject to change due to COVID-19 and may be delayed or moved to streaming services. If one of the movies sticks out to you, check online for updates!

Is It Legal to Drive Barefoot in Georgia? Debunking a Long-Held Myth
Imagine that you’re cruising along in your car, obeying the speed limit, and using your turn signals appropriately. You can feel the gas and brake pedals under your feet because you’ve kicked off your shoes. Then a cop car approaches, and you get pulled over. If you’re like a lot of Georgia drivers (or drivers from any state for that matter!), you may be worried about getting ticketed for driving barefoot. If you get ticketed, though, it’ll be for something else because as it turns out, driving barefoot in Georgia is totally legal. Somehow, this myth has persisted for decades, but, in fact, no states in the U.S. have outlawed shoeless cruising. There is an important exception to the rule, and that’s for motorcyclists. When driving a motorcycle, you are required to have footwear of some kind on for safety reasons. Speaking of safety, though it is perfectly legal to drive without shoes on, it may not always be safe or wise to do so. Some drivers wearing high heels or sandals like flip-flops may opt to kick off their footwear. It may be more
comfortable, and in the cases of those two kinds of footwear, it may also be safer, as heels can easily slip off the pedals and sandals can catch on the gas or brake pedals. If you do opt to remove your shoes, be sure to place them away from the driver’s side of the car to ensure they don’t roll around or otherwise distract you and become a hazard. To be both safe and protected from liability should you get into an accident, it’s best to be wearing well-fitted footwear. When it comes to accident cases, you don’t want to give the other side any reason to suggest you were being negligent or not driving safely. If you regularly wear heels, sandals, or other footwear that’s not optimal for driving, you can keep an extra pair of shoes in the car to wear while on the road. When it comes to bare feet, it’s best to save them for the beach or the backyard. For more driving safety tips, visit our website at GAInjuryAdvocates.com.

The massive indoor and outdoor venues include basketball and volleyball courts (both indoor and outdoor); a multipurpose field for soccer, lacrosse, rugby, and football; and even a three-lake wakeboarding park. That means LakePoint can serve athletes participating in 30 different sports, including gymnastics, cheerleading, wrestling, and even pickleball. If there’s a basketball tournament indoors, volleyball players can head out to serve, set, and spike in the complex’s 10-court beach volleyball pavilion. And that’s not to mention the on-site concessions, hotel rooms, and meeting rooms. Even nonathletes can enjoy the beautiful grounds and the Champions Center for conferences and meetings.
