Stop Being Afraid of Bad Decisions THE GUARANTEE TO SUCCESS T hey never teach you how to run a business in law school. You graduate knowing how to practice law, but you

I once heard someone say that life is designed to be successful. Everything in the universe is designed in such a way that it can thrive with just a little effort. Take a seed, for example. A seed could fall onto a concrete sidewalk, but as soon as it finds a crack with just a little dirt, it will start growing. There are seeds that fall onto desert cliff sides, and they can still turn into thriving trees. Life is built for success; you just have to keep making the decisions that propel you forward. The thing that trips many people up is the fear of making the “wrong” decision, but it’s like I said last month: As long as you learn something, there are no bad decisions. When I was young, I decided I didn’t want to spend my life working 60 hours a week like my parents had to. After that one decision, every time I came to an opportunity that would push me forward toward my goal, I took it. Not every decision was right, and some of them knocked me down, but I didn’t complain. I learned something and I kept moving forward, closer and closer to success. No, success isn’t guaranteed, but being successful is a lot easier than most people think it is, provided you’re willing to put in the work and make decisions.

have no idea how to run a practice. This is a problem a lot of professions deal with. Recently, I ate lunch with a chiropractor who I sometimes send referrals to. During the meal, our conversation turned to the challenges of running a business. At one point, he quoted an old saying: “There’s no guarantee to success.” I’ve heard this quote before and, personally, I think it’s total nonsense. When people say this, they mean there’s no one-size-fits-all strategy for success. Obviously, what works for a lawyer may not work for a chiropractor, but no matter what industry you’re in, if you want to be successful, you need to be willing to keep moving in the right direction. What I mean is that you can’t sit around waiting or rest on your last victory. If you want it, and you’re hungry for it, then you’re willing to make all the decisions that will move you in the right direction. I’ve talked to a lot of successful people, and one thing they all share, regardless of their industry, is the ability to make decisions quickly. When there’s a choice to be made, these people look at the options and choose a path without wasting a lot of time. And once they’ve made a choice, successful people tend to be very slow to change their minds.

This is completely opposite of the kind of people who never seem to accumulate much success in their lives. These people make decisions very slowly, then change their mind several times before acting. As a result, they never stick to anything and never take action. We all know these people. They’ll talk about painting their office blue, then a week later see a different color they like more, only to waffle back and forth. Then six months have passed, and the office still isn’t painted! Decision-making is a big part of success. This applies to business as well as your personal life. Whatever you want to achieve, you need to make a decision and commit to it, even if that decision is to read a book or take a class. Keep making decisions that will drive you forward.

WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? SNACKING There are many different opinions on the healthiness of snacking. Some people think of snacks as processed foods with high calories, but snacks don’t have to be junk food. Depending on what snacks you’re eating, and how often, these little in-between-meal bites can be highly beneficial or detrimental to your overall health. HEALTHY VS. UNHEALTHY SNACKS People snack when they’re hungry, but they also do it when they’re stressed, bored, or have a habit. When people snack on unhealthy junk food when they’re bored, the result is weight gain. An excellent way to avoid unhealthy snacks is to surround yourself with healthy alternatives. Fill your fridge and pantry with whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and nuts and legumes. With those in your kitchen, you’ll have plenty of healthy options to choose from when you’re hungry. WHO BENEFITS FROM SNACKING? Depending on your weight, fitness level, and medical conditions, snacking throughout the day can be more effective than eating three large meals a day. Individuals who are crunched for time, have particular health conditions, are athletic, or are trying to lose or maintain weight all benefit from healthy snacking throughout the day. People who have high cholesterol or diabetes can better maintain their cholesterol and blood glucose levels if they eat frequently during the day. For athletes, snacking helps distribute the consumption of nutrients their body needs throughout the day instead of all at once. This way, their energy levels stay the same instead of fluctuating with their meal times. If you find yourself in need of a quick bite, think clementines and almonds instead of chips and Pop-Tarts. You’ll still satisfy your hunger without jeopardizing

PROM SAFETY

4 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE

Seeing gorgeous dresses, fancy suits, corsages, and boutonnieres pop up in advertisements can only mean one thing: Prom season is here! This time of year, teens are busy choosing the perfect dress or suit to wear, finding a date, making dinner reservations, and preparing for an evening of fun and dance. During this exciting time, give your teens a little encouragement and guidance to ensure they have a safe and memorable evening. CREATE A PLAN Create a plan for prom night, and make sure everyone knows what it is. Your teen should know and communicate with you what time the dance starts, what time it ends, if they’re going anywhere after, and when they’ll be coming home. PHONES Make sure your teen’s phone is completely charged in case they need to reach out to you sometime during the night. Encourage your teen to check in once every few hours, and establish an emergency code to use if they find themselves in trouble. DRIVING You and your teen should also have a plan about the modes of transportation, who’s driving, and how many people your teen is going with. Trusting the driver is important. If you’re hesitant about letting your child be driven to prom, find another way. If your teen is driving the family car, confirm that they will be the only person driving the vehicle. DRESS SAFETY Make sure your teen is dressed comfortably and appropriately to ensure they have a fun night without any accidents. Encourage them to wear comfortable shoes that they can walk and dance in without pain. High heels are fashionable, but they shouldn’t wear heels so high that they may fall and hurt themselves. Whatever your teen decides to wear should be comfortable and hemmed to the appropriate length based on their height.

your health or increasing your waistline.

By keeping these safety measures in mind, your teen will have a wonderful and safe evening!

167 Years of Glover Park

Generations of Memories at Glover Park

The Soul of Marietta

Marietta Square is often called the “Heart of Marietta,” but Glover Park, located in the center of the Square, may be the city’s soul. For almost 170 years, Glover Park has been a place where families picnic under the trees, children explore the playground, musicians play on the bandstand, and couples fall in love by the fountain. Generations of Marietta citizens have made memories in Glover Park, thanks in no small part to a promise made by the city’s first mayor. When the first mayor of Marietta, John Heyward Glover Jr., donated the land that would become Glover Park to the city in 1852, he did so on the condition that the land should always remain a park, or it would be returned to his heirs. This promise would come into play

in the 1960s, when the city proposed plans to build a four-story parking deck in the park.

The Glover family, who still lives in Marietta to this day, quickly sued the city in order to reclaim the park. However, since the deed to Glover Park was destroyed during the Civil War, another lawsuit was initiated to clear the title. The Georgia Supreme Court ultimately ruled with the city of Marietta, stating that “proof of title could not be established by hearsay evidence.” Fortunately, public outcry against the changes were so great that the parking plans were scrapped. Glover Park remains open to the public and is a welcoming place to spend a beautiful summer day — hopefully for many more years to come.
