Spring-Cleaning Isn’t Just About the House ...

What’s on Your To-Do List?

We all have a to-do list, and spring is a good time to take care of it.

At work and home, there’s still time for spring-cleaning, which I’ve found to be a mindset as much as anything else. You have to remember that until the last century or so, most people in the world still depended on farming in one way or another, and it had been that way since time immemorial. I think we’re wired to feel the spring air and realize there’s a lot to get done if we want to survive the next year —which was certainly true for the agrarian lifestyle most people led until recently. So, we can — and should — clean our houses this season to expend the energy we feel this time of year. It’s also a great time to tackle the projects we’ve been avoiding or haven't been able to get to. In my household, that means we’re tackling the yard in a big way. Since moving into the neighborhood, we’ve heard “Oh, you live in Frank’s house” at least once a month — Frank, of course, being the previous owner of many years. But even though it’s a tight-knit community, not everyone was as well-known as Frank, who cultivated a veritable jungle for all the world to see. Frank loved plants. Of that, there’s no doubt. He planted them everywhere, in all the nooks and crannies of the yard, sometimes almost on top of each other. When spring hits, it’s something to see — an almost overwhelming thicket where vivid colors occasionally break out from the sea of green. On hot sunny days, neighbors appreciate walking by our house because of an abundance of shade our trees provide on the road. When people come to visit, we just say, “Turn in at the jungle. You’ll know it when you see it,” and that hasn’t failed yet. I don’t want to come off as unappreciative of Frank’s passion, or of his yard, for that matter. It really is amazing, and I see a lot of beauty in it. But like any healthy space, a yard needs more than just plants. It needs to be tended as well. And in that regard, we’ve got some work to do: Trees need pruning, some plants are too close to one another to get nutrients or sunlight, and a lot of dead plants haven’t been pulled out because you’d need a machete to get to them. Cleaning out the thicket has been a priority of ours for a while now, but for one reason or another, it just hasn’t happened. This year, that’s changing: We’re going through the yard, section by section, and

deciding what stays and what goes. The remaining plants will be healthier and happier for it, and we’ll have a well-tended yard instead of the wilderness that currently exists. I find myself thinking of this as similar to having a healthy mouth: flossing and taking care of our teeth and brushing the tongue as well. Even if we have strong bones, get enough calcium, and brush our teeth, much more goes into our dental health. And if we bleed when we floss, it’s a sign that something isn’t right — after all, should our hands bleed when we clean them ? I’m sure many readers can sympathize with tasks like this, and that’s why I’m encouraging everyone to join me in harnessing the “spring-cleaning energy” this season to knock those items off your to-do lists. And if one of those items is a trip to our office — perhaps because you’ve been avoiding it due to the pandemic — spring is a great time to do it. We’re all prepared and ready to take care of you. –Dr. David Yates

As we age, we’re told to wear sunscreen, eat more vegetables, take vitamins, and even walk more — all in hope that our internal clocks will slow down and we will age better. But something as simple as laughter could actually be one of the easiest ways to slow the ticking clock of aging. Scientists have long known that laughter can be therapeutic and help us live longer. It has been shown to reduce wear and tear on our bodies and improve our relationships. A Norwegian study found that those who prioritized humor were more likely to live past 70 than those who didn’t laugh often. At a biological level, laughter can reduce tension in your muscles and activate a powerful stress-relief response from your brain by releasing dopamine. Just one chuckle may even improve your breathing and heart function! In fact, laughing can work wonders for the heart. One study showed that laughter therapy helped reduce the blood pressure and cholesterol levels of its participants. Their blood circulation improved, too. Studies have also found that regular laughter can help strengthen your immune system, and it has long-term benefits for those with respiratory conditions. Laugh More, Age Less WHY LAUGHTER IS GOOD FOR YOU

In addition to your body, laughter is also good for your social life. (And we don’t mean that people will want to spend time with you if you have all the good jokes!) Throughout history, laughter has been an evolutionary sign of understanding. When there are language barriers, laughing together can create camaraderie and a tighter bond between people of different cultures. The dopamine release that comes with laughter aids in stress relief and creates powerful memories that can improve your mood and strengthen friendships. Of course, laughter has its downfalls, too. Laughing at someone else’s expense is detrimental to their health and can harm your relationships. So, stick to light jokes and actively seek shows, cartoons, or people who make you laugh. You’ll feel good, and your body will be pretty happy, too.

THE FAMOUS GRANDMOTHER AND GRANDSON DUO

Before quarantines were put in place, GB would visit her beauty salon once a week to get her hair touched up. Knowing that his grandmother was down about not being able to go, he decided to bring the spa to her. Matthew washed,

Watching grandparents become part of the social media community is so heartwarming. Through videos with their children and grandchildren, the wholesome content they create is bound to make any viewer smile — and they can't help but smile too! One such grandma, a TikTok and Instagram star, is smiling with a brand-new set of dentures in a video captioned, "They gave GB a piece of her youth back." Matthew Stewart lives in Florida and spends most of his time with GB, Grandma Bobbe. His Instagram is full of photos and videos of himself and his family as well as all the adventures, jokes, and sweet moments he shares with

dried, and styled her hair for her, with a mimosa to top the experience off. This touching video reached thousands of people and prompted guest appearances for GB and Matthew on “Access Daily,”“Now This,”“Fox & Friends,” and “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

The antics of these two brought such joy across the nation that GB receives a large number of packages and letters regularly. Each video shows GB near tears, overwhelmed by the amount of love and support from her over 173,000 Instagram followers and 2.9 million TikTok followers. In a video uploaded just before Christmas, GB received a wonderful gift from Affordable Dentures & Implants ORL: a brand-new set of dentures. Now she can continue making videos with her beloved grandson with a “beautimus” smile.

GB. One of the first videos Matthew shared on social media was a light argument about whether or not he should accept gas money from GB. Afterward, the pair quickly rose in popularity, but they became truly famous after uploading a particular video in late 2020.
