What RVs Have Taught Us About Authenticity

The ongoing pandemic has taken its toll on people in a variety of ways, but the one thing I think we can all agree on is needing a sense of escape from it all. In our house, we’ve all but unplugged from watching the news — the unrelenting negativity was starting to get to us. That means, in the evenings, we’ve needed a different form of entertainment to spend some time unwinding. If you had told me just a few short months ago that our entertainment of choice would be a YouTube channel called Matt’s RV Reviews, I would have probably laughed at the notion. But it’s true. For several weeks now, Robin and I have been tuning in nearly every evening to catch the latest episode of this low-budget series hosted by a guy who loves RVs and wants to tell you all about them. Our son is currently escaping the world from inside his own van in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and hearing about his adventures is what initially sent us looking for this kind of content. But what’s funny is that we have no intention of purchasing an RV or camper, at least not nearly anytime soon enough that would warrant us having to watch video reviews about them. And yet here we are, practically addicted to this show that breaks down the best and worst features of these massive homes on wheels. If you’ve never seen the channel, the backstory is that Matt is a guy who works for General RV, a national company that sells RVs and campers. He and his wife moved to Florida when he got his job as a salesman for one of their locations, but this was prior to the coronavirus outbreak, and the trend of RV-living hadn’t gotten nearly as big as it is now. That meant they were flat broke after their move and needed to recover. So as a means to educate and raise excitement about RVs, Matt started Matt’s RV Reviews. It’s now up to nearly 73,000 subscribers, and because of the success of his channel, General RV has since promoted Matt to a spokesperson role for their company. It really is a great underdog story, and he’s clearly knowledgeable about the products he reviews in his videos. But we’ve realized that it’s not the RVs or even his knowledge about them that keep us coming back. It’s his authenticity in doing what he does and the pure joy he gets from doing it that makes him so fun to watch. Learning about RVs through Matt is interesting and entertaining even for people like us who aren’t RV enthusiasts or customers. His videos provide a reassuring sense of predictability, and we can always count on Matt to be warm, excited, and eager to show off something he loves. He wants nothing more than to contribute to this

growing culture, and he does his best to build a sense of community by asking viewers what they’d like to see happen with the RV industry. He’s so authentic in what he does that you can’t help but like him and want to keep watching him. Authenticity is everything. At Gardens Dental Care, it’s what we aim to infuse into every patient visit. We’re knowledgeable, we love what we do, and staying authentic to those facts is how we provide experiences that keep our patients coming back. IS STRESS HARMING YOUR MEMORY?

Stress can cause more than just a bad mood and low energy. Over time, mental exhaustion from stress can lead to forgetfulness and reduced cognition. This can hamper your ability to do your job and enjoy life. Though stress is unavoidable, there are steps you can take to mitigate some of the negative effects of mental exhaustion, including forgetfulness. How to Cope With Daily Triggers First, consider the source of your stress. These days, a common stressor is social media. If your feeds are full of bad news and negativity, shut them down. Many researchers suggest that spending less time on the internet leads to better health. Several studies have found that constant internet use, including time spent on social media, is negatively impacting our memories. Research from Harvard, Oxford, King’s College London, andWestern Sydney University all confirm this: Too much internet use is a bad thing. Of course, it can be easier to delete a social media app than it is to eliminate other types of stressors. Coping with a stressful coworker, for example, can be difficult. You have to figure out why they’re causing you stress and how the situation can be remedied. Dealing with a work-related confrontation can be hard, but having that difficult

conversation and resolving the problem can ultimately lead to less long-term stress and improve your mental health.

Another thing you can do to reduce stress is avoid multitasking. Taking on multiple projects or doing too much in too little time can leave you feeling overworked. Plus, studies have found that multitasking is not effective. You cannot deliver the same results when your attention is scattered as you can when you are focused on one thing. To make matters worse, multitasking takes a major toll on memory and cognition, according to a study from Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. If stress is impairing your memory, judgment, or cognition, take the above steps to reduce it. If you find your memory and cognition aren’t improving, consider speaking with a mental health professional to discuss your best next steps. Mental health and stress management are important, and the more we do to improve these areas of our lives, the healthier and happier we will be.

Classic Pumpkin Soup

Inspired by MinimalistBaker.com

1 tbsp olive oil INGREDIENTS

2 tbsp honey

1/4 tsp sea salt

2 shallots, diced

1/4 tsp pepper

3 cloves garlic, minced

1/4 tsp cinnamon

2 1/4 cups pumpkin purée (homemade or canned)

1/4 tsp nutmeg

2 cups vegetable broth

1 cup canned light coconut milk

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, sauté olive oil, shallots, and garlic for 2–3 minutes. 2. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer. 3. Transfer the soup to a blender and purée. Pour the blended soup back into the pan. 4. Cook over medium-low heat for 5–10 minutes. Taste and add additional seasoning as desired, then serve!

The Spooky ‘Star Wars’ Shortage of 1977 A long time ago … in October of 1977 to be exact, Halloween was fast approaching and many parents faced a major dilemma. That year, kids didn’t want to go trick-or-treating dressed as vampires, witches, or ghosts. The classic costumes simply wouldn’t do. That

costumes than pumpkins. Kids who got their hands on an authentic Han Solo or C-3PO costume were considered lucky. But kids who arrived at the store to find the costume shelves empty didn’t throw in the towel. Instead, they went and found some brown towels to make their own Chewbacca costumes.

Halloween, almost every child in the United States wanted to dress as their favorite character from the new hit movie, “Star Wars.” Today, you can walk into a Halloween City on Oct. 30 and easily pick up a costume for Rey, Darth Vader, or Princess Leia. But in 1977, less than five months after the release of the first movie in the popular franchise, getting your hands on “Star Wars”merchandise was a bit more difficult. Ben Cooper, a costume company in Brooklyn, had the foresight to license “Star Wars” for costumes right after the movie came out. Unfortunately, they didn’t foresee how great the demand for these costumes would be.

In the current age of cosplay, homemade costumes based on movie characters are commonplace, but in 1977, this was uncharted territory. Kids searched for white dresses to be Princess Leia and bathrobes they could cut short to mimic Luke Skywalker. Moms everywhere broke out their sewing machines and created costumes using only action figures for reference. It was grueling work, but it showed how much kids wanted to spend Halloween in a galaxy far, far away.

The “Star Wars” costume shortage marked a new era for Halloween — one where making your own costume was just as cool, if not better, than buying it.

Retailers across the country were selling out of “Star Wars” costumes as fast as they came in. Some stores reported selling more “Star Wars”
