THE IMPORTANCE OF FINDING THAT HEALTHY BALANCE All Work and Some Play?

August is an interesting month — it has two polar opposite days of recognition I support and resonate well with. Work Like a Dog Day falls on Aug. 5 and encourages us to work hard to meet every challenge. But National Relaxation Day falls on Aug. 15, just 10 days later. While I love to work hard, and I have for my whole life, I’ve learned it’s important to set aside time to relax and unwind, too. A few years ago, my dad passed away. I was in a store and just happened to stumble across a plaque that reads, “The surefire way to success is to take massive action every day.” Immediately, I thought of my dad and had to get it, and today, it hangs on a wall in my office! When I was young, he would tell me I could have anything I want as long as I do not steal, do not lie, and make sure my work is better than any contract I sign. By this, he meant I better work my fanny off to achieve my goals. And I did. When I was young, I had many jobs that kept me busy. Now, I’m 80 years young and still thoroughly enjoy what I do. My office is a short seven minutes away from my home. I’m excited to head into work every day, and if you know me well, you’ll know my hobby truly is work. However, just because I have a strong work ethic and know how to “work like a dog,” so to speak, it doesn’t mean I don’t know when to unplug and unwind a bit, too. As the beach is only about an hour and 15 minutes away from our home, my wife and I enjoy going there often. Before COVID-19 was such a threat, we’d go once every three months or so to get away from the phones and just take time to relax while walking the beach and grabbing a bite to eat for lunch. Enjoying the sound of the waves crashing against the shore while feeling the sun on your skin is a great way to recharge our batteries.

For 30 years, my wife was a real estate broker up until she decided to retire roughly 28 years ago. She surely also knows what it

means to work hard and put in the effort, all while raising three children as a single mother. I always stress just how much she deserves to relax now.

Another way I like to relax is by reading. When I was young, we lived in the country, and every Saturday, we’d go into town. My dad would get his contractor supplies for the week, my mom would stock up on groceries, and my sister and I would be dropped off at the public library. Here, we could check out a total of 10 books at a time, and every time, I’d check out 10 and have them read before the next week’s trip back to the library. Now, I read roughly two books a week. Two thirds of those books are business- related, and others are strictly for entertainment. A few years back, my wife’s best friend introduced me to Daniel Silva, a wonderful author of thriller and spy novels. Well, she got me hooked, and thus far, I’ve read 15 of his 16 books. Reading is the perfect distraction from work I need. This month, I challenge you to think about what motivates you to work hard and, better yet, what is your favorite way to kick back and relax? A healthy balance of both is so important to ensure a positive lifestyle!

Lulu the Pig Is a Hero! She Saved Her Owner From a Heart Attack

Lulu captured the hearts of the Altsmans when their daughter asked them to pet-sit her overweight pot-bellied pig. The pair quickly fell in love with Lulu, and their bond got stronger each day. This relationship was literally life-saving when the wife suffered a heart attack one August afternoon. Jo Ann Altsman was home alone with Lulu and their dog, Bear, when the incident occurred. Her husband was off on a fishing trip, and the pair didn’t have any neighbors nearby. Bear began to bark to try and get someone’s attention, but Lulu knew she had to do something before it was too late. So, she made her way out of the doggie door, which badly scraped her belly as she exited. Lulu had never left the yard, but today was different. To get some attention, she decided to lie down in the middle of the road and play dead until a car stopped to check on her. After several minutes of lying on the street, several cars passed by but didn’t stop. So, she checked on her owner, then squeezed through the doggie door and lay down on the road again. After 45 minutes, a gentleman on a motorcycle pulled over to check on Lulu. She immediately perked up and began walking toward the house, leaving a trail of blood behind her as she walked. The man followed Lulu and found Altsman

unconscious on the ground. He quickly dialed 911 and asked for assistance. When the medics put her owner in the ambulance, Lulu attempted to get in with

them. Of course, she couldn’t come, so she began to squeal as she watched the medics take her mom away. Thankfully, Lulu’s wounds were attended to, and Altsman received life- saving open-heart surgery at the Beaver Medical Center. Because of her loyalty and creative thinking, this pot-bellied pig became a celebrity overnight! She was a guest on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and the “Late Show With David Letterman.” Everyone fell in love with Lulu and her heroism.

Thank you, Lulu, for being a loyal and brave pet!

SETTING BOUNDARIES FOR YOUR TEENS

Honesty — creating a judgment-free space to be open and speak freely Responsibility — taking accountability for one’s mistakes Respect — learning how to communicate boundaries effectively

As children grow older, some tend to engage in more risky behaviors. They like to test their parents’ patience and limits to see what they can actually get away with. But when you establish boundaries with your older children, it can set them up for success and teach them a thing or two about responsibility. Creating Boundaries That Reflect Your Values You cannot simply say the rules — your actions must reinforce them if you want them to be followed. They must also reflect the positive values that mean the most to you, as they will influence how your children see you. The clearer your values are, the easier it is to express and communicate them to your older kids, and the more likely they are to follow along with the boundaries that respect those values.

Be Supportive, Not Enabling Supporting someone is helping them do something they might not be able to do themselves in the right conditions, whereas enabling is stepping in and mitigating consequences that would otherwise be a result of a negative choice. Enabling is an undesirable behavior that can occur when parents give in to complaints or demands to avoid conflict. Instead of avoiding possible conflict, it’s best to support your older children while they navigate through your rules. Allow them to have questions or make mistakes. That way you can provide a framework where they have the ability to act and make decisions on their own. Setting rules or boundaries for your older kids is an essential tool that aids in their development. Over time, the process will help lay the foundations for them to become self-regulating adults.

Here is a list of core family values to consider:

Positive relationships — whether that be with family members, friends, coworkers, or even strangers Priorities — define what matters to your family first

Your body undergoes a variety of changes over the years, many of which are degenerative and can be debilitating to your health. But exercise can help slow these age-related issues, like heart disease or high blood pressure, and even prevent them in the long run. Here are four ways you can get moving without overexerting yourself. Walking or Jogging Taking a stroll around the neighborhood or a few laps around the park can help build stamina, strengthen lower body muscles, and help fight against bone diseases like osteoporosis. If you want to sweat it out some more, jogging might be a great alternative. But remember to be kind to your joints: Walk at a pace you’re comfortable with, wear supportive shoes, take breaks as needed, and walk on soft surfaces, like tracks or grass. Gardening While gardening doesn’t seem as vigorous as other exercises, it is a hearty physical activity. Digging around in the dirt is actually great for your immune system, and it strengthens your arms, legs/knees, and balance. Mycobacterium vaccae, which is a bacteria commonly found in gardening soil, can alleviate symptoms of allergies, asthma, and even psoriasis. Cycling Whether it be in a class or outdoors, cycling can be very beneficial for stiff or sore joints. You’re able to get your blood flowing and build muscles in the front and back of your legs as well as your hips. Your arms are also strengthened due to the resistance of balancing your arms and shoulders to steer. Yoga Holding a series of poses can stretch and strengthen your muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It also helps lower heart rate and blood pressure and can even relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. LIVE LONGER AND STRONGER CHANGING THE SCOPE OF EXERCISE

3 TIPS FOR SENIORS BEFORE BUYING AN RV EMBARKING ON AN RV JOURNEY

Do your research. There is much more to buying an RV beyond the actual shopping experience. You have to also learn to drive and/or tow it! Before making a purchase, be sure to research and look up reviews on the driving experiences of other owners of the same make and model. An RV can be a second home, so take your time and make sure you’re getting exactly what you want. Before making your decision and pulling the trigger on your brand-new RV, make sure you’ve done your homework and are prepared for life on the road! A huge adventure awaits — the best thing you can be is prepared!

You can tour the country without ever having to leave your home — motor home, that is! Seniors around the country are all hopping aboard the RV train because it’s a great way to get up close and personal with nature while being free to go where you want. One morning, your backyard can be Yellowstone National Park, and the next, you’re in the Mojave Desert! If you’re looking to purchase an RV in your golden years, here are some tips.

Rent one first. Renting an RV before you make the commitment to buy one is the way to go, especially if you’ve never taken a trip in one before! This way, you can take it for a nice long test drive and determine which features are must-haves and which you can do without. It’s also a great way to make sure you’re okay being in such a small space with your family, partner, or travel buddy!

Don’t rule out pre-owned RVs. RVs can be expensive, depending on which model you are looking into. In some cases, opting to purchase a pre-owned RV can save you a great deal of money. And, if you get a great deal on a pre-owned one, you can repair, renovate, and redecorate it to your liking with the money you saved. An additional perk is that insurance is usually cheaper on pre-owned RVs!
