REMEMBERING THE MAN WHO GAVE ME ALL I NEED My Dad, My Role Model

This month, we celebrate Father’s Day, a day to honor our dads and the wonderful relationships we share with them. I truly believe it takes a special person to be a dad, and my father was one of a kind. I was so blessed to have had my dad with me up until five years ago — my father lived to be 95 years old. My dad left behind the legacy of knowing that whatever you want in life, you must work for it. Some of you may remember this story about my dad, but it’s powerful and defines my dad so well that I’d like to share it again. “My dad left behind the legacy of knowing that whatever you want in life, you must work for it.”

couldn’t afford it — that felt like his famous saying. But, this time, he followed it up with, “I can tell you how to get a bicycle, though.” My little ears perked up, and I thought to myself, “Great! Oh, boy!” So, I asked my dad how I could get one, and he gave me a few rules to follow. He said, “Don’t steal to get something, don’t lie to get something, and your word better be better than any contract that you ever sign. Lastly, work your little fanny off.” At that young age, I had no idea what he talked about with the contract bit, but I surely understood the rest. I’ve been working since the age of 6. I sold everything under the sun including punch cards and newspapers. In fact, at 9 years old, I had three separate newspaper routes. He instilled my work ethic in me. Now, I’m 80 years old and still working. I live seven minutes away from the office and love what I do to assist my clients. It’s an honor. In my office, I have a clock on the wall with some photos, and right below that, I have a 3-by-5-inch plaque on the wall that reads, “A surefire path to success is taking massive action every day.” While my dad didn’t give this to me, when I saw it, I immediately thought of him.

Another great chunk of memories I have of my dad are from deer hunting. We never shot one deer, and that made our trips somehow special. It was more about being together in the forest, sitting on stumps, and eating candy bars while visiting with each other. Those are some of the greatest memories I hold dear. A few weeks back, I celebrated my 80th birthday, and as I had my dad with me in spirit, I felt lucky enough to be surrounded by my wife and amazing kids. Being a dad is the greatest thing next to having a fabulous father.

As a young guy, about 6 or 7 years of age, I really wanted a bicycle. It became all I thought about, dreamed about, and talked about. My dad responded to my begging, saying we were too poor and we just

To all dads, I hope you have a fantastic Father’s Day! Enjoy the day!

INTEGRITY, RELIABILITY, & COMMITMENT

FINDING KINDNESS IN THE PASTURE BE LIKE BUSTER THE BULL

Nothing compares to a good friend. They’re someone who will listen and provide support when you need it most. For everyone in Spartanburg, South Carolina — and eventually the whole world — that was Buster the Bull. Buster’s talent for companionship wasn’t discovered until Wynne Smith moved into the farm next to Buster’s.

As Wynne’s connection to Buster grew, she began posting about him on Facebook, and soon enough, the bull had a huge following. People from across the nation and the globe knew that Buster was special, with an uncanny ability to listen and offer knowledge in a way only cows can. And he provided comfort to all who knew him. One time, a fan of Buster’s asked if he could meet the bull. The man was dying, and one of the last things he wanted to do was meet the cow who had given him some solace during his final days. With permission from his doctor, the man drove two hours to meet Buster, hauling a basket of apples along the way. Although kind, Buster was never one to eat apples that didn’t come from his tree. But that day, Buster knew those apples were special, and he ate them. Buster did that for a friend. In November 2020, Buster walked into the woods and laid down to pass away. He had been sick, and despite some treatment, the all-knowing bull just knew it was time. He had done what he came here to do: spread kindness.

After he appeared in her barn one day, Wynne was a little scared, but soon, as Wynne told Reader’s Digest in August 2021, Buster became a confidant.

“Somehow, he knew when I was home and would come to stand next to my house, and we’d talk over the fence,” Wynne said. “If I had a hard day at work, he heard about it. If something exciting was going on at home, he heard about it. He would stand or lie beside the fence and keep me company, give a knowing glance or breath, and I would feel better. When it was time to end the conversation, he’d turn and walk away.”

Today, his friendship still lives on for the residents of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and all the fans of Buster the Bull.

School’s Out! What Can You Do? 4 Activities to Keep Your Kids Busy

Create a craft station. Do you have creative children? Then a craft station is a perfect activity to get their creative minds turning! You can either go to your big-box store and pick up some arts and crafts supplies, or you can use items from around your home, such as used printer paper, toilet paper rolls, old colored pencils or crayons, and items from nature. If you need inspiration on what to make, you can look online for different crafts your child can create. Visit parks and recreation areas. Summer camps can be expensive; luckily, some parks and recreation centers host day camps that are much cheaper than private camps. Sometimes they will have daily activities that your child can participate in to burn off some energy. If you’re looking for a place where your children can play outside and stay active, going to your local parks is a great resource. If they aren’t hosting day camps, you and your children can play outside by throwing a Frisbee, having a picnic, or going on a nature walk.

It’s summertime, which means your kids are out of school and at home during their break. This is an exciting time because you get to spend more time with your children, but it can also be stressful. Since your kids are not engaged in school every day with their peers, you may have to find ways to keep them entertained during the summer. Luckily, there are a few activities your children can do to stay busy and active while they’re on summer break. Visit your local library. Make a habit of visiting your local library once a week for your children to pick out books they can read. You can challenge them to see how many books they can complete over the summer. Although your child may read educational books for school, now is their time to pick out something they want to read just for fun. Some libraries offer summer reading programs and activities that your child can participate in. By going to the library over the summer, your child’s mind will stay engaged, and their love for reading can increase. Go to local attractions. In most states, there are history and science museums, art galleries, and zoos that you and your children can visit. If these attractions are state-funded, they often have free admission for visitors. These activities are great if your child is a visual learner. They can touch and interact with exhibits and learn more about history or science. Who said learning couldn’t be both fun and educational?

Summer is an exciting time, and with these activities, you and your child can spend some quality time together!

According to the National Institute of Mental Health Disorders, an estimated 26% of Americans over the age of 18 suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder. With increases in the cost of living, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rising tensions in Eastern Europe, that percentage could increase even more throughout the next few years. If you’re someone who struggles with mental health, you’ve probably tried all of the traditional methods to improve your situation, but have you made any adjustments to your actual home? If you’re unsure where to begin, try out these tips. Give each room purpose. One of the biggest interior design mistakes you can make is using a room for more than one thing. This is even more important if you work remotely. Each room should have a dedicated purpose. If you work from home, your office should not be in your bedroom or even in the area where you exercise. Plan out every bit of space that you have and add personal touches to it to remind you of what’s really important in your life. Get rid of distractions. Social media, mainstream news, and cellphones as a whole can have disastrous effects on your mental health. When you’re in your home, try to minimize your use of these technologies. If you’re not using the television, keep it off. Also, try to keep your home as clean as possible because clutter and dirt can easily bring you down. Use natural light and calming colors. When designing your living space, try to incorporate as much natural light as possible. Regular exposure to sunlight gives you more energy, makes you happier, and even improves your appetite. If you’re painting, avoid any loud colors and use calming neutrals instead. Adding the right colors, natural light, and some plants will help create an aesthetic that will boost your mental health. Travel Insurance: Scam or Savior?

If you’ve ever booked a plane ticket or hotel stay online, you’ve probably been offered an opportunity to “protect” your purchase for an additional fee. Since you’re spending big dollars on your trip, you may have hovered over the option, wondering if it’s a wise investment or a quick money-making scheme. Before you buy, you should know that trip protection and travel insurance are different. When you book directly through the airline or hotel or on a travel website like Travelocity or Expedia, they offer you trip protection. These plans often provide nothing more than a voucher you can use to reschedule in the event of a cancellation — something you won’t need if you book refundable accommodations. But you can also purchase travel insurance through a reputable third party, and these policies offer cash refunds if your trip is canceled or interrupted. They also typically cover lost or damaged bags, and high-quality policies will cover medical emergencies that occur at your destination. But there may be restrictions, so always make sure you understand the terms and buy coverage that offers the protection you want.

It can be hard to swallow the idea of paying more to insure yourself against an event that probably won’t happen. So, can you skip it? The risk you’re willing to take is up to you, but remember the amount of money you’re spending on travel and consider whether it’s worth protecting your investment. While you may decide against travel insurance for your weekend trip two states away, experts recommend always purchasing it for international travel or cruises due to the higher cost and potential for things to go wrong. The price, they say, is usually worth the peace of mind.

If you’re going to purchase travel insurance, you should take the time to shop around, just like you did with your accommodations. Not all plans are created equal, so read the fine print and make sure you understand what is covered — and what is not. The last thing you want is to spend your hard-earned money on a policy that leaves you holding the bag.
