Doggone Perfect

Meet the Milliron’s Family Dog, Sheba!

M y wife and I joke that our dog, Sheba, was our “trial run” before having kids. We rescued Sheba from a shelter in April 2014, just six months before we married. Upon returning home from our honeymoon, Sheba was ecstatic to see us again, jumping up and down and wiggling her whole body. That cemented Sheba’s place in our family. We call Sheba our 60-pound lap dog. She’s a 7-year-old German shepherd, husky, and border collie mix, which shows in her various attributes. She has the ears of a shepherd, the tail of a husky, and some herding tendencies. Her fur often gives away her nerves, too. Whenever she’s nervous or sees someone she doesn’t know, the hair along her back stands straight up. It’s all for show, though; Sheba would lick you to death! Perhaps the greatest trait Sheba has is her patience. She’s very gentle with our kids, and our daughter, Paige, likes to test this. Paige has even fallen on top of Sheba! (Sheba ran away to her “safe zone” under the table.) Paige will also offer Sheba handfuls of food, and when Sheba has had enough, Paige will leave the piles around the house. It’s a “nice” surprise. For as patient as she is, I’m sure Sheba’s vacation is when we go on vacation. We once had a dog sitter ask if it was normal that Sheba was sleeping all day. In reality, Sheba was just fine; she was just enjoying a week of peace from excited kids.

Cowboy and Caboose. They were both great dogs. I would come home from school and they would be excited to see me. They passed away when I was still in elementary school, and every year until I was about 15 years old, I would beg for a dog for Christmas. And every holiday I was disappointed to discover that none of my presents were barking. Now that I’m a parent myself, I can understand my mom’s logic. She had three kids to raise and shuttle off to various activities. Dogs are a lot of work, and they require attention and money. It’s a big commitment to open your home to a dog, but it can also be very rewarding. Adopting Sheba from a rescue has been one of our greatest joys, and for now, she’s the only canine we need. She’s made all my childhood dreams come true, and there’s no better companion we could have in our home.

Regardless of how much my kids hound her or how happy she is to have a few moments to herself, I know our home wouldn’t be complete without Sheba. She’s my shadow, often following me around when I get home from work, and my wife appreciates having another living thing who isn’t a child in the home during the day. Sheba offers the perfect level of companionship. My wife and I have talked about getting another dog, but now that I’m an adult, I can understand why my mom was so adamantly against getting another dog when I was a kid. Between me and my siblings, I’m the only one who remembers my mom’s two German shepherds,

The Power of Music to Shift Your Mood Depressed, Anxious, or Angry? Try Listening to Rock ‘n’ Roll!

2020 has been a difficult year. If you’re feeling frustrated, angry, or depressed right now, you’re not alone! All over the world, people have been trying different strategies to cope with their feelings, including yoga, meditation, exercise, binge-watching their favorite TV shows, and even baking banana bread. But perhaps the most universal outlet and cure for pent-up emotions is music. Do you remember the clip that went viral in March of Italians in quarantine, singing together from their balconies? If you do, that’s probably because it made you smile. TIME heralded it as proof that “the country’s spirits are still strong,” and it’s just one small example of how music uplifts people. This isn’t just an anecdotal effect, either. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, music can help us process emotions and fight mental health conditions like

conducted by the Family Center for Recovery (FCR) suggests that rock is the genre of choice.

“During any given year, depression affects approximately 5%–8% of Americans,” FCR reports. “According to our survey participants, the vast majority — around 89% — turn to music in

order to feel better. The top genre for depressed listeners is rock, followed closely by alternative, pop, and hip-hop/rap.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the blues came in last on the list.

“Well, I feel so much better than I did before coming here. Before coming here, I experienced a lot of dizziness daily whenever I was doing things that required full body movement, such as walking down the hallway and up/down stairs at work. Now I am able to return to my normal activities at work without the dizziness! The physical therapists that worked with me were so kind, friendly, and helpful. Also, there is a very positive atmosphere here, which is SO important. I would recommend anyone and everyone to come to Gilbert for PT!” –Allison W. or “Grief,” and fill them with songs from genres associated with fighting that feeling. According to FCR, rock is the most popular antidote to sadness and anxiety, and it’s also high on the list for anger, along with pop and country. Frustrated people opt for variations of rock, pop, punk, and heavy metal, and those stricken by grief turn to soft rock or soul. The artists are up to you, so fill up your lists, press play, and let the music do its work. To put the power of music to work, create playlists for each mood that you want to turn around, like “Anger,” “Frustration,” “Sadness,” “Anxiety,”

anxiety, dysregulation, depression, trauma, sleep disorders, schizophrenia, and more.

Why We Love PT So, how can you take advantage of music’s power to turn your mood around? One option is to create music of your own, but another is simply to listen. When it comes to f lipping a bad mood on its head, a survey

BRAIN THERAPY! Take Up a New Hobby Calling all golfers: This may be the excuse you’ve been looking for to hit the links! Arthritis sufferers can find the most relief through low- impact activities, including golfing, swimming, walking, and biking. Specifically, swimming eliminates the powerful strain gravity has on joints, while walking works your joints without much of an impact. Meanwhile, golfers experience better balance and strength after hitting the links. (Ask us how to improve your stance or which equipment to use to protect your joints while golfing!) The last thing anyone with joint pain wants to do is move, but that might just be what arthritis sufferers need to do. Our joints were made to move, and those who have healthy, active lifestyles often experience less severe joint pain. However, the caveat is that this exercise has to be low impact and joint-friendly. This guide can help you find the moves you and your joints need. Joint Effort: Exercises Your Joints Will Love And You Will Too!

Improve Your Isometric Strength Gaining muscle strength and mass takes the pressure off your joints, which in turn limits the inflammation on your joints. One of the best ways to build muscle is through isometric exercises, which are achieved by iso lating your muscles for specific exercises without the use of your joints. The moves require a lot of pulling and pushing, such as pushing your hands together to strengthen your chest or practicing your wall-sits. These moves take the pressure off your joints and place it on your muscles, and that discomfort is powerful for helping muscles to grow! Tap Into Ancient Practices Yoga and tai chi have seen a resurgence in recent years, but the origins of these practices are centuries deep. Due to the low-impact nature of yoga and tai chi, these practices are also very beneficial for those with arthritis. Rather than relying on muscle strength, these practices exercise your joints’ full range of motion without heavy strain. The fluidity of the movements is gentle on the joints while increasing their strength. And your joints need this movement. Without proper movement or with a limited range of motion, joints become stiff and cause pain.

Joint pain is common, but it doesn’t have to hinder your lifestyle. For more joint-friendly exercises or lifestyle routines, give our team a call today!

Love Rescue Animals? Here’s How You Can Help Local Critters!

Support Local Animals With These 3 Organizations!

Brando and Rose — both Stray Network alums!

We love rescue pets at Gilbert Physical Therapy! Many of our staff members have rescued animals, so in honor of the dog days of summer, we’re highlighting three local animal organizations. Whether you donate your time or money or choose to foster or adopt, there are many ways you can impact the lives of local animals today. Castaway Critters James Hueholt was 37 years old when he died in 1994, but his lifelong mission to rescue and care for animals continues to save lives to this day. Castaway Critters was created in Hueholt’s honor, and since its inception in 2001, Castaway Critters has helped more than 11,000 animals. The organization specializes in finding foster homes and veterinary care for abused, neglected, and stray animals. Relying on a network of foster families within six Pennsylvania counties, Castaway Critters specializes in unique and “problem” cases. The group also offers adoptions through its foster network. Learn more or donate to the organization at CastawayCritters.org . Speranza Animal Rescue

them new homes. Speranza is located on a 17-acre farm in Mechanicsburg. The nonprofit relies solely on donations and volunteer effort, and those who want to help can do so in multiple ways: Ask for donations in honor of your birthday or wedding, become a sponsor, or hold an item drive to collect toys, food, and other materials. Of course, you can also find your new pet at Speranza. Visit SperanzaRescue.org to learn more. Stray Network Rescue Like Castaway Critters, Stray Network Rescue focuses its efforts on finding foster homes and permanent placements for abandoned or abused animals. However, the organization emphasizes helping moms and puppies find their forever homes and grow during such a vital time in their lives. Organized and operating with a team of volunteers, Stray Network Rescue partners with organizations across the U.S. to rescue and re-home animals across Pennsylvania. For more information or to give to Stray Network Rescue, visit StrayNetwork.org .

Pulling its name for the Italian word for hope, Speranza Animal Rescue focuses on rehabilitating severely abused or neglected dogs and finding
