The Real Legend of Sleepy Hollow
For me after 10 minutes of mediation, showering, brushing and flossing, morning grapefruit juice and vitamins I head off to my command center which is actually my desk and computer where I plan my day. I write down what I need to accomplish. I make two lists one that contains the 3 most important things I need to accomplish and another on items that I need to address but which are less important. I attack and solve the 3 most important items and then if there is time move to the less urgent ones. If I don’t get all of these done I will move them to tomorrow. On Monday mornings since I am not in the office I also track if I am accomplishing my yearly goals. The goals can never be fully accomplished because they are set a bit too high but the challenge is to see at the end of the year how close I came and then move the bar up again.
With summer now over hopefully you had an enjoyable and relaxing time. Were you able to go to the beach, drive or fly somewhere? Living in New York City requires some time off from our hectic lifestyles for continued mental and physical health. Usually on January 1st people set goals for the coming year. Hopefully you are on your path to reaching yours but if not: How about setting some new goals right now for the fourth quarter of this year.

One thing I find helpful is to develop a morning ritual. Getting up a little earlier in Manhattan before everyone else finds the city quieter and calmer.
Goals can only be obtained through perseverance, determination and tracking. If you want to lose weight you need to watch what you eat, do some aerobic and weight resistance exercise and track your weight and waist weekly. As you age you need to monitor your blood pressure and if elevated analyze your diet, increase your weekly exercise or visit your doctor. I want to see you for a long time. If you want to save money you have to develop the discipline of putting money away each week or on payday to pay yourself first before paying everyone else. This can be very challenging but necessary. If you haven’t started to develop good habits maybe now is the time. Labor Day has just passed and marks the end of summer and the beginning of a new cycle. Make the beginning of September your new beginning and begin today.

Halloween Celebrations in Sleepy Hollow
Another highly anticipated stop for many guests is Sleepy Hollow’s premier annual attraction, Horseman’s Hollow, an experience not for the faint of heart. During the event, the 300-year-old Philipsburg Manor is transformed into a living nightmare, where vampires, witches, ghouls, and undead soldiers lurk in the shadows. They all serve the dreaded Headless Horseman and are determined to make sure guests don’t leave alive! But it’s not all scares in Sleepy Hollow. There’s plenty of Halloween fun for all ages. Sleepy Hollow boasts relaxing hayrides, tours of Irving’s home, live readings of famous Halloween stories, performances of a brand-new musical based on Irving’s spooky tale, and the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, an incredible exhibition of over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins. If you want a real Halloween experience, you can’t go wrong in Sleepy Hollow. Just be careful not to lose your head!
gave chase, hurling his own decapitated head at the terrified teacher. Ichabod Crane was never heard from again ... or so goes “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This story, first published in 1820, has become a Halloween favorite. The legend is so beloved that in 1997, the village of North Tarrytown, New York, where many events of the story take place, officially changed its name to Sleepy Hollow. Today, the town becomes one big Halloween party during the month of October. Sleepy Hollow is home to many historic landmarks, including the Headless Horseman Bridge and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving himself was laid to rest. Evening lantern tours of the cemetery are a popular attraction, and Irving isn’t the only spooky celebrity buried there. Fans of the Gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows” will be delighted to enter the crypt of famed vampire Barnabas Collins. You want to decrease the amount of bacteria in your mouth especially before going to sleep where bacteria thrive in an environment that is warm, dark and without air. Failure to brush and floss at night leaves excess food in your mouth. Upon waking you need to brush and floss to remove any overnight buildup. Also morning mouth can be disturbing to your friends. Realize all the bacteria in your mouth are anaerobic meaning without oxygen. When you brush your teeth you bring air into your mouth which contains 20% oxygen. Your teeth are squares or cubes and when you brush you clean the top, back and front but do not get in between. However when you floss you bring air in between your teeth reducing the levels of bacteria. All teeth have a cuff surrounding them which in health is 3mm in depth. When you eat, food accumulates in these pockets and if not removed breaks down releasing acids. In the first phase of gum disease called gingivitis the ligaments holding the teeth in your mouth are attacked. Once the pocket gets greater than 5 mm in depth you are no longer able to reach the base of the pocket through flossing since the floss would have to cut your gums to reach the bottom of the pocket.
In 1790, a school teacher named Ichabod Crane was riding home alone from a harvest festival in the village of Sleepy Hollow when he encountered a mysterious rider on horseback. Crane, horrified by the horseman’s missing head, turned and ran in the opposite direction. The Headless Horseman
ARE YOUR FOUNDATIONS STRONG?
If food continues to accumulate in the second phase of gum disease called periodontitis the pockets will increase in depth. This leads to bone loss and eventual tooth mobility and tooth loss. Periodontal surgery is then necessary to save your teeth which is expensive and slightly painful. The good news is daily flossing and brushing with bi-yearly dental exams and cleanings will prevent this situation from occurring. So let the floss be with you for continued dental health.
For those of us who cared the end of Game of Thrones was a disappointment. However our crowns continue to serve and when you smile we want you to have healthy and happy teeth. You may not be aware but just like a beautiful building you would not see it without a strong foundation. The same is true with your teeth. Teeth are maintained in your jaw due to healthy bone and surrounding gum tissue. You could have a full set of teeth without any filings or decay and lose them to a poor foundation. Periodontal disease or gum disease which attack the foundations of your teeth is preventable and also amendable to treatment. The good news is that you control the extent of gum disease in your mouth. The easiest way to prevent gum disease is through daily brushing and flossing. Ideally you should floss and brush twice per day. Once in the morning upon waking and a second time at night before retiring.

REGGIE ‘MR. OCTOBER’ JACKSON’S LEGENDARY GAME

Some people shine brightest in the spotlight. When put to the test, they deliver every time. Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson is one of those people. During the sixth game of the 1977 World Series, Jackson hit three home runs in a row, securing the Yankees’ victory over the Dodgers and winning them their 21st World Series title. The legendary playoff game also earned Jackson the nickname “Mr. October,” which has stuck to this day. Like many stories of greatness, Jackson’s featured a lot of hard work behind the scenes. He dedicated himself to his sport and constantly worked to improve his play. Growing up, Jackson played baseball, basketball, and football and excelled at all three, though football was his strong suit. He was scouted and given opportunities to go pro straight out of high school, but, on the advice of his father, he went to college on a football scholarship. Thanks to a $5 bet, he tried out for the baseball team at Arizona State University and made it. Jackson was the first black person on the team, and, even though he experienced discrimination, he never let it stop him. From the minor leagues into the majors, Jackson’s ambition got him through many tough times, as did the constant support of his father and of Oakland A’s Manager John McNamara. Jackson always dreamed of playing for New York, and, eventually, his dream came true when he signed with the New York Yankees in 1976. To this day, Jackson holds many prominent records, including being the first player to earn more than 100 home runs for three different teams (the A’s, Yankees, and Angels). He even has his own candy bar, the “Reggie! Bar,” which debuted during a Yankees game in 1978. Let’s see if any of this year’s playoff games stir up as much excitement as Reggie Jackson’s did in his heyday.
CLASSIC APPLE CRISP
INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS
Filling: •
1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. In a mixing bowl, mix all filling ingredients together. Transfer to individual serving ramekins. 3. In a different mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt for the topping. Mix in butter until it forms lumps roughly the size of a pea, then stir in pecans. Sprinkle topping over filling. 4. Bake for 35–40 minutes, let stand for 10 minutes, and serve.

OUR STARBUCKS To keep us humming, we use the Starbucks at 84th and 3rd. I myself just get a plain old joe, but our staff are into the creative drinks. They are friendly and know us well. However, the food is sky high in sodium, so be careful.
VIA QUADRONNO Located at 25 E. 73rd Street, Via Quadronno has the best espresso and cappuccino in the city. It’s a bit of Rome right here in New York but with a little bit of ‘tude. The food is also delicious, but the seating can get tight.
THE CITY BAKERY Located at 3 W. 18th Street, The City Bakery is like having a little bit of LA here in NYC. It’s easy for us Upper East Siders to get there by taking the Q train to 14th Street–Union Square and then walking a few blocks. Bakery products are also sold, and they are quite filling and satisfying.
