The War on Your Teeth
To maintain your dental health, it’s recommended to brush your teeth in the morning and at night and, ideally, to floss at the same time. It is not a one and done process, but rather a daily ritual that maintains the health of your dentition. Biyearly visits to us, your dental practice, make sure all is running well.

What Is the World’s Best Exercise?
However, there is more to you than just your teeth. You also want a healthy body and a clear mind to boot.
To achieve this goal, you need to move your body at regular intervals. For those of us fortunate to live and work in Manhattan, we have a unique situation. It is true that no one walks in Los Angeles, not even for one block. But here in New York City, we all walk. The sidewalk is our treadmill and the subway our StairMaster. Good health requires movement, and walking is definitely beneficial. Our heart is a muscle, and a strong heart is desired, so we need to raise our heart rate to increase its strength. This can be accomplished with aerobic exercise, which increases our oxygen consumption and heart rate. Good exercises for Manhattanites include jogging, bicycling, swimming, roller skating, and aerobic classes. My preference is skiing, but you have to leave Manhattan for that. Did you know that each additional inch on your waist increases the pressure on your knees by ten pounds? Also, the increased circumference of your waistline leads to the addition of miles to your circulatory system, causing your heart to have to work that much harder. Some form of resistance training with weights or bands is necessary to increase your muscle mass and make you stronger and leaner, since it takes more calories to burn muscle than fat. We all know living in New York City can be stressful, and exercise helps to relieve stress and give peace of mind.

Summer in the City
Those of us who are “apples,” meaning we have more weight around our midsections versus “pears,” who have excess weight situated in their bottoms, have to be even more careful since “apples” are more prone to heart disease. Keeping your waistline below 40 inches is a goal everyone should strive for. If your waistline is above 40 inches, you are more prone to health problems. Finally, diet is important. Apples, bananas, and oatmeal are good for your digestive system. Eating more fruits and vegetables and less red meat is also helpful. The problem we New Yorkers face is so many good things to eat; we are totally surrounded. The key is moderation: one slice of pizza, not the whole pie; one beer, not the six-pack; and one donut or bagel at a time.
We want you to have healthy teeth, but we also want you to be healthy overall — and don’t forget to floss!

CELEBRATE NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY DAY
Tips for Capturing the Best Outdoor Photo!
FIND THE ANGLES Landscape photography isn’t about appealing to someone else’s sense of style; it’s about shooting what makes you happy. Take some time to study the work of other nature photographers you enjoy. What angles do they use? What colors do they coordinate within the frame? How close do they get to their subject? Try something different. Go against the grain, use a different angle, shoot a close-up where others would shoot wide angle. Find a good starting place and experiment a little. HARNESS THE LIGHT Nature photos often look great in the morning or evening light, but the type of lighting you use is often dictated by the scene you are trying to capture. It’s generally accepted that side-lighting, where the sun is coming from either side of the camera, is the most desirable for landscapes because the contrasts between light and shadow can add depth to your photos. However, front- and back-lighting
— where you shoot away from or into the sun — can also produce nice photos. Similar to angles, try experimenting until you find something that looks good to you. CROP FOR TEXTURE Sometimes the difference between an amazing shot and a mediocre one is distance. When photographing nature, try zooming in or moving geographically closer and cropping close on your subject. This could be tree bark, a leaf, the forest floor, or a lizard’s skin. The fine details of your subject can often create stunning images. In your quest to snap the most Instagram-worthy shots, the most important thing to remember is to respect the animals and the environment. Be sure to bring bags with you to take any garbage or other waste with you, and stay on designated trails while exploring. Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll be taking incredible nature photos in no time.
Nature Photography Day is June 15, and it continues to garner enthusiasm with each passing year. It’s been designated by the North America Nature Photography Association as a day to promote the enjoyment of outdoor photography and to explain how nature photography can advance conservation efforts locally and worldwide. Almost everyone has access to a sufficient camera with smartphones, but not everyone knows how to best capture a beautiful nature scene. Here are some tips to help!
THE GAME OF THRONES IS OVER But the War on Teeth Remains
allergies are increasing, dental manufacturers have now developed crowns without metal components. These crowns have porcelain on the outside and a ceramic core on the inside. These crowns also have adequate strength and superior aesthetics.
Kingdoms together. Crowns help to prolong the longevity of your tooth by maintaining its structural integrity. Unlike the show, you are already a king or queen, but just as there are multiple houses competing for the throne, there are multiple crowns to choose from.
On the HBO show “Game of Thrones,” multiple houses are under attack, and their leaders must shore up foundations for the coming siege. Each house is different from the others, having certain advantages and disadvantages. Using intelligence, cunning, and a plan of action, each leader’s goal is to obtain the throne and be crowned the king or queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Your teeth are also under siege and need to be protected from the coming storm. Daily brushing and flossing will hold back the tide of tooth decay and gum disease. Grinding and clenching at night due to New York City stress also attacks your teeth and can fracture existing restorations. When a tooth fractures due to decay, stress, or a worn-out filling, you may need to be crowned. A crown holds your tooth together just like the chosen one holds the Seven

The gold standard is a gold crown. Its advantages are that it is similar to the properties of your tooth and will generally last the longest. However, it’s yellow in color and to most is no longer acceptable. The porcelain-fused metal crown combines the strength of metal with a layer of porcelain to match the shade of your other teeth. Its advantages are strength and aesthetics. Today, many individuals don’t want metal restoration and are looking for more natural alternatives. Since metal

THE WORLD’S BEST EXERCISE
Not all exercises are created equal. In fact, there is one form of exercise that is better than many others: walking. Harvard Medical School took a look at various exercises and concluded that walking is up there with swimming and tai chi in terms of health benefits. Regular walking can help maintain good cholesterol and blood pressure levels and keep your bones strong and healthy. One study showed that 40 minutes of walking every day helped people reduce blood pressure from hypertension to prehypertension, and then eventually to normal over several months. Walking can even keep many different kinds of diseases at bay, such as diabetes and heart disease. In addition to these physical benefits, walking daily can improve your mood and overall mental health. As simple and straightforward as walking is, it can be difficult for many people to find the time. Most experts agree that you need 30–60 minutes of physical activity per day, but the good news is that you can split those minutes up throughout your day. For example, you can take a brisk 20-minute walk in the morning before work, followed by another one at lunch and one more after dinner. Those 60 minutes also don’t have to be strenuous; they just need to happen. However, the more time you invest in walking, the more you will get out of it. If you slowly increase your distance and speed, you’ll end up burning more calories and strengthening your legs over time. The great thing about walking is that it’s not particularly taxing on the knees, and you can move at your own pace. It doesn’t get any better than that! To get the most out of walking, schedule your walks for after mealtimes, especially the ones that come later in the day, like lunch and dinner. It’s a great way to aid digestion and burn calories — which can’t hurt your waistline!

Summertime in New York brings people out of their apartments and into the open air. Some use it as a chance to head upstate or out to Long Island. Others, us included, see it as inspiration to find fun activities without ever leaving the boroughs. Whether this time of year reminds you of “Under the Boardwalk” by the Drifters or “Rockaway Beach” by the Ramones, you’ll have a blast at these iconic destinations. CLASSIC SUMMER ACTIVITIES That Remind You How Special NYC Is
some drinks while you wait. You can find this year’s movie schedule and more details at BryantPark.org. A NIGHT GAME AT YANKEE STADIUM For as long as anyone can remember, baseball has been an integral part of summer in the city. Kids play in the streets, weekend warriors take to the ballfields, and the pros have a game on a near-nightly basis. While Citi Field in Queens has its charms, we are partial to the splendor of Yankee Stadium on a summer evening. Hop on the train and head to the Bronx to take in the Bronx Bombers. No matter where they are in the standings — hopefully near the top — it’s a great experience that every New Yorker should have at least once.
THE CENTRAL PARK CAROUSEL Since 1871, there has been a space in Central Park dedicated to a carousel. Located parallel to 65th Street, it’s one of the park’s signature attractions. The current carousel, which was restored in 1990, provides rides to roughly 250,000 guests per year on beautiful, hand-carved wooden horses and chariots. You don’t even have to take a spin yourself to revel in the wonder and nostalgia of the carousel. There’s just something mesmerising about being around it. J.D. Salinger clearly felt the same way because he featured
the carousel in one of the most powerful scenes in his classic novel, “The Catcher in the Rye.” BRYANT PARK MOVIE NIGHT There are plenty of parks where you can watch free movies outdoors this summer, but our money’s on Bryant Park as the best place to catch a flick with a couple hundred of your closest friends. The lawn opens at 5 p.m. on scheduled nights, and you’ll want to get there well before sunset to secure a prime seat. Bring a picnic basket, lay out a blanket, and order
