SUMMER 2022
TURN, TURN, TURN THERE IS A SEASON
Yes, the season has turned and now it is hot town summer in the city with the back of your neck getting dirty and gritty or California dreaming on such a summer’s day. Not winter’s day in LA — one hundred degrees with zero humidity beats NY’s eighty degrees with one hundred percent humidity every time. You could fly away to someplace else but of course there are the airports. With flights being cancelled by the hundreds you could get stranded. You could drive away but with gasoline soon to be at six dollars a gallon you probably do not want to drive far. So, what can we do locally? The outdoors is calling and time to get out of your box even with the A/C humming. Now what are you going to do? You should be chilling and relaxing or chillaxing. The beach is calling if you can handle the sand and sun. One problem is where do you store your gear? If everyone is in the water, what about your valuables? Don’t forget the suntan lotion if being a lobster is not your thing. Maybe you’d rather visit a lake? There are many lakes in upstate New York. I like lakes. No salt water here and they are
Going back to Central Park in addition to bicycling you could rent a row boat. Row, row, row your boat gently around the lake and try not to careen into anyone while life is just a dream. You could walk into the center of the park into the brambles and feel you have left the city while still being in the city. There are museums galore but remember this is now tourist season. Museums are better in the winter when the tourists are away. There is almost nothing worse than being in a museum and inching around as in a traffic jam. As a real New Yorker you want to avoid any areas where tourists congregate. You live here so go to those spots when the outlanders are gone. Of course there are the restaurants and many have outdoor eating. On a summer’s night in a quiet part of town and a glass of wine with good food and company, it’s hard to beat. I’m not a Hamptons type of guy and I hear there is only one road there which does not move. Not for me. One thing is certain. Time flies by so get out there and do something and don’t forget us. Your teeth want to be cleaned. A clean mouth is a happy mouth and I’m also here to entertain you. What could be better?
more refreshing than the ocean. Maybe I am a fresh water vs. salt water fish. One challenge is this foot suction that lake beds apply. Watch out for that careening fish hitting your leg.
Maybe a nice hammock swinging in the breeze would be nice.
You could go out to the stadium, Yankees or Mets, but only at night. If you drink enough beers the game becomes more interesting and a lot more expensive. No ceremonial cups for me. They need to somehow speed up the game. How is beyond me. A long time ago there was Palisades Amusement Park which swings by day and after dark. Now there is a series of apartment buildings overlooking the Hudson. Not a lot of amusement parks around here. Great Adventure is in New Jersey but it seems a long haul to stand on long lines for a brief moment of excitement. There is New York City’s great oasis. Central Park is the park central to Manhattan and is at least an area of nature in the big city. You could go bicycling but it now appears that it is almost like freeway driving on a bike vs. in a car. Here’s a thought: In LA they are called freeways until the highway patrol pulls you over and gives you a ticket. Now it is no longer free. Here in the northeast, they are called highways or turnpikes, where they just have you pay a fee in advance.

ITS SUMMERTIME AND TIME TO GET OUT OF YOUR BOX Amuse yourself at an Amusement Park The 1964 World’s Fair built at the same time as Shea Stadium. Here you could travel the world while still remaining in Queens. It was also the amusement park of the future. In 1964 they were predicting what might be today’s reality. Now only the Unisphere and the New York State pavilion survive. Wasn’t that structure in "Men in Black"? Freedom Land was an amusement park on American history located in the Bronx. Only lasting four years and not too exciting it is now the site of Co-op City. Madam Tussauds Wax Museum in Times Square was a creepy place where you could see all kinds of famous people re-created in wax. Hopefully, the air conditioning did not break down. There is the Bronx Zoo where all the animals in the zoo are jumping up and down for you. Problem is it can be so crowded that the animals are looking and pitying you while not moving around at all. Yankee Stadium and Citi Field might be considered amusement parks. Of course it’s not amusing when either or both New York baseball teams excel in choking. Not amused with those fifteen dollar beers even upgraded to nineteen dollars in the ceremonial cup. Top it off with an overcooked Nathan’s hot dog and some soggy fries and you’re in baseball heaven. Of course if you have a beach house in The Hamptons overlooking the ocean you don’t need an amusement park because for you, you can just kick back and enjoy the view and ocean breeze. For the rest of us we need to get out and be entertained.
Everyone wants to be healthy. Luckily today, concerning your teeth, with fluoride in the drinking water, the amount of tooth decay is way down, especially if you make the effort to brush and floss your teeth. How do cavities occur? Sometimes you can be predisposed to decay due to your genetics but most of the time it is due to eating sugary, sticky foods and not removing the remaining residue by not cleaning your teeth. The outside of your tooth is made up of enamel, which is a very hard substance. The inner part of your tooth is made up of dentin, which is technically millions of little straws pressed close together. For decay to inhabit your tooth it has to break through the enamel layer. Think of decay as looking like an upside down or right side up pyramid, depending if you are on your upper or lower teeth. The top point is the entry point into your inner tooth. Most people have grooves and lines on the surface of their teeth so if food remains there it disintegrates giving off acids which attack the surface of your teeth. Once the decay forms, that little hole into the interior of your tooth it now has an ideal environment to cause mayhem. For decay to grow it needs a dark, warm area without oxygen and a continual source of food. Inside your mouth it is dark, approximately 100 degrees, and once the decay is inside your tooth there is no oxygen. As you continually eat there is a constant source of food. NOBODY WANTS CAVITIES Next came Palisades Amusement Park on the cliffs of New Jersey. This was a little seedy, representing the type of amusement park Walt Disney wanted to re-create towards a more friendly and family type of attraction. Today there are apartment buildings overlooking the Hudson River. The Cyclone roller coaster is still chugging along a wooden monstrosity and you will feel the ride. No shock absorbers here and the Steeplechase horse race which survived until 1960. Now that was a horserace where you sat upon a carousel type horse but instead of going round and round you were actually on a single rail train track and competing with other horses. Hold on tight since you were only secured with a leather belt. If you fell off your horse or if it left the track you were doomed. A long, long time ago in a place near to here there were amusement parks which have gone away. Back in the 1920s Coney Island had Luna Park and Steeplechase Park where you could enjoy and try to survive the amusements. There was the parachute jump, still standing today, where you were hauled up and then dropped. You had to have some nerve to handle that one.
Since the decay is within your tooth you are unable to remove or clean it with your toothbrush and it continues to grow. The only way to remove it is to see your dentist who will excavate it out and replace the missing tooth structure to restore your tooth to health. You can also get decay between your teeth by not flossing to remove any impacted food remaining there after eating. Here at Dr Glenn Reit’s dental practice, we do not want you to have decay. If you do, we will remove it and restore your tooth to health. So, if you are looking for a dentist on the Upper East Side of Manhattan or you are visiting the Yorkville, New York City area, give us a call.
We are happy to meet with you and restore your health.

TRAVELING FOR THE FOOD? Don't Miss These 3 Festivals
According to AAA, millions of Americans take "culinary-focused vacations" every year. We’ll travel to Philadelphia for cheesesteaks, Texas for barbecue, Louisiana for gumbo … you get the idea. Our culture loves to eat! If you're a traveling foodie, you are in luck: Add these three summer festivals to your must-visit list for this summer or future food-finding trips.
Pierogi Fest (Indiana) July 29–31; PierogiFest.net
The Polish pierogi is a humble food: mashed potatoes and cheese wrapped in soft dough and either fried, baked, or grilled to perfection. But simplicity should be celebrated! In Whiting, Indiana, Pierogi Fest is a three-day affair that brings in more than 300,000 people for events like a Polka Parade, a pierogi toss, and, of course, pierogies stuffed with everything from cheese to alligator meat. Of course, there’s also a beer garden, because as the organizers put it, “Beer and pierogies go together as well as peanut butter and jelly.”
Key West Lobsterfest (Florida) Aug. 11–14, KeyWestLobsterfest.com
Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival (New York) July 31; JerkFestivalNY.com
This year is the 25th annual Key West Lobsterfest! Seafood lovers come from all corners to enjoy the crustacean-crazed festival, which includes a cinematic lobster boil at sunset, a lobsterfest pool party, a pub crawl, and an all-you-can-eat-and-drink lobster brunch. Head to the website to learn more and score delicious lobster recipes — even if you can’t attend! Want more food festival intel? We’ve got you. Visit Insider.com and search “food and drink festivals” for a list of 28 top food attractions, ranked by Yelp reviews.
Yes, New York City is home to fantastic pizza and bagels, but it’s also a Caribbean food hub! At this festival, visitors can stuff themselves with jerk chicken, enjoy whole fish, and drink icies straight from hollowed-out pineapples. Six celebrity chefs will make appearances this year to compete in food contests and show off their Jamaican roots and/or dishes. When attendees aren’t eating, they can relax at a musical or cultural performance.
