CELEBRATING CHIROPRACTIC’S 125TH ANNIVERSARY
The Story of D.D. Palmer
Aside from Labor Day, September doesn’t come with many notable holidays. However, for those of us who work in chiropractic,
While certainly not every person who is deaf can be helped by chiropractic, the takeaway from that story is that myriad conditions, aside from just back and neck pain, can
a very important day is coming up on Sept. 18: chiropractic’s 125th birthday. On this day 125 years ago, the first chiropractor made the first adjustment, making way for thousands of chiropractors to follow in his footsteps and for millions of people to be helped through noninvasive procedures. The founder of chiropractic was Daniel David Palmer, more commonly known as D.D. Palmer. He was a practitioner of magnetic therapy (a common practice at the time) who had an extensive knowledge of human anatomy and a passion for all sorts of scientific literature. Through his studies, he found that for

restore your nervous system to full function, so the messages from your brain to your body can move unimpeded.
D.D. Palmer initially received pushback from the medical community for his new techniques. They called him a quack and tried to discredit his claims and his research. However, the medical
community at large eventually saw the value in Palmer’s methods, and
today there are more than 70,000 active chiropractors throughout the United States. In 1897, just two years after he first adjusted Harvey Lillard, Palmer founded the Palmer School for the Cure, which later became known as Palmer College of Chiropractic, in Davenport, Iowa. It is now the
thousands of years, medical practitioners had used various forms of spinal manipulations to cure various ailments. He also discovered that no one had codified or created a scientific rationale for these treatments, so he set out to do just that. D.D. Palmer gave the first chiropractic adjustment to a janitor and elevator operator who worked in his building, a man named Harvey Lillard. Lillard had been deaf for 17 years following an incident where he bent over and felt a pop in his back. Palmer surmised that Lillard’s deafness and the pop in his back might be connected. Upon examining Lillard, Palmer found a problem with one of his vertebrae. After manipulating Lillard’s spine, something incredible happened: His hearing was restored. I’ve heard this event called “the adjustment heard around the world.”

In our office on Sept. 18, we don’t do much by way of celebration for the anniversary of the founding of chiropractic. We might write something on our announcement board at the office or post about it on Facebook, but aside from that, it’s business as usual. That said, maybe the best way to celebrate that day is to continue with “business as usual” — giving our community access to the holistic health care that has helped millions of people for the past 125 years. –Dr. Chris Garner

CELEBRATING JEAN PARISI
Grand Strand’s Patient of the Month
We’re so lucky to have a wonderful, dedicated patient like Jean Parisi. When she first came to us, she was experiencing pain that was consistently affecting her daily life and getting worse over time. We’re so glad that she finally found Grand Strand Health and Wellness, not only because we’ve been able to alleviate the pain that she felt over the past few years, but also because we love the warm personality Jean brings to the office. Every time Jean has an appointment, she enters the office with a huge smile on her face and has kind words for everyone on the team. Despite any pain that she might feel, she’s always so full of energy when we see her, which never ceases to inspire us as we go about caring for her. Jean is very caring, and she wants everyone to enjoy their lives to the fullest. That’s why she’s referred her family to us so they can have their lives changed, too. When Jean isn’t at the office, you’ll probably find her outdoors. She loves spending time outside, whether she’s riding her bike or just going for a stroll in her neighborhood. You might also find her spending time with her children and grandchildren who live in town as well. Jean also has a passion for animals, particularly horses. Horseback riding with family and friends is one of her favorite activities, and she actually spends some of her time helping rescue horses, too.
We at Grand Strand Health and Wellness want to sincerely thank Jean for allowing us to be one of her go-to health care providers. We’re looking forward to the next time she comes in for an appointment, and to many years of enjoying her and her family’s visits to our office.
Do What You Love and Keep Your Body Moving
HOWHIIT BENEFITS PEOPLE OF ALL AGES
High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is one of the best ways to burn fat, build muscle, and give yourself a better chance at a longer, healthier life. HIIT workouts are characterized by brief periods (30 seconds to a few minutes) of high-intensity exercise, followed by periods of low- or moderate- intensity exercise. However, what makes these workouts truly remarkable is just how much they can benefit people in every age group. According to Mayo Clinic research, HIIT workouts provide unique benefits to the body on a cellular level. The brief, vigorous exercises actually increase your metabolism and improve the health of mitochondria, the powerhouses that create energy within the cells. By energizing your cells, you can actually reverse the decline in muscle health that occurs as people age. Energizing cells
through HIIT benefits everyone, but these workouts can be of particular benefit to those over age 65. Seniors experience diminishing returns on energy produced by their bodies at a cellular level, and HIIT has been shown to reverse that process even in advanced age.
HIIT workouts also have many other advantages for people of all ages. The exercises don’t necessarily require any
equipment, and you can even see results from adding high-intensity intervals to daily walks. Those with health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, can still participate in HIIT. In fact, Healthline reports that HIIT workouts can reduce heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar. However, the biggest draw to HIIT exercises is just how much of a timesaver they are. A few minutes of high-intensity movement can be just as beneficial as roughly 45 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise.
You can incorporate HIIT exercises into whatever activities you enjoy, such as walking, cardio exercises, and strength training. If you’re affected by weak joints, you can incorporate HIIT into lower impact exercises, such as swimming or cycling. If you want to feel energized while doing the things you love, then HIIT just might be something you want to try. Just remember to keep a steady pace and don’t overdo it!

Celebrating Jackie Young
Grand Strand’s Team Owner of the Month
When we think of Jackie Young, the words that immediately come to mind are rock star. Jackie is our front desk chiropractic assistant, and since starting several months ago, she’s done an outstanding job. We’re lucky to have her as one of our team owners here at Grand Strand Health and Wellness. Sometimes, though, she shines bright enough that you’ll notice Jackie just by her greeting you from the front desk.

Client Success “Before I started chiropractic care, I was experiencing pain in my shoulder going the length of my arm and into my finger tips. The pain began to get worse. Since starting regular chiropractic care at Grand Strand Health and Wellness, I have experienced relief since the first treatment. After the third treatment, I had almost no pain at all. That makes me very happy with the entire treatment I received. I can see chiropractic benefiting my overall health in the future by continuing with treatment. If somebody I know hasn’t tried it yet, I recommend it because Dr. Garner is extremely efficient and so is his staff. Everyone is professional and very friendly.”

The Nutrients You Need During Physical Therapy
The Nutrients You Need During Physical Therapy FOODS FOR A FASTER RECOVERY
Attending your physical therapy appointments and doing your at- home exercises as instructed by your PT are crucial parts of your recovery process. However, they’re not the only important steps you should take. What you eat can affect how quickly and well you heal just as much as your dedication to your exercises. By incorporating a few of these foods into your diet, you can heal faster and come back stronger than ever before. OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS There are three phases to the healing process: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. While you might think that inflammation is a bad thing, it’s actually a normal and necessary part of healing. That said, you should still try to reduce inflammation, as it can be harmful in excess. Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids do wonders to control inflammation. Plus, our bodies can’t make omega-3 fatty acids naturally, so we have to get them from what we consume. Foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids include fatty fish, olive oil, avocados, pecans, walnuts, and almonds. ANTIOXIDANT-RICH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES Along with omega-3 fatty acids, the antioxidants from fruits and vegetables can also go a long way in reducing inflammation. Broccoli contains vitamins A, C, and K, as well as folic acid and several
different minerals. (Pro Tip: Cook your broccoli to maximize these nutrients!) Citrus fruits and peppers
have high levels of vitamin C, and peppers have high levels of beta-carotene as well. Additionally, turmeric and garlic work wonders during the healing process.
PROTEIN-RICH MEATS, NUTS, AND DAIRY PRODUCTS When it comes to the proliferation and remodeling stages of healing, healthy sources of protein are the way to go. Lean meats like poultry and fish are easy sources of protein, but if you don’t eat meat, you can also get protein from beans, eggs, nuts, and dairy products. Protein-rich foods will help heal muscles and bones and prevent muscle atrophy. It’s incredible what the body can do with just a few intentionally consumed superfoods!
