Increased blood flow to a certain area of the body causes increased inflammation, which, in turn, leads to increased pressure on your joints and nerves. When you apply ice to the injured area, it slows blood flow and decreases inflammation. Heat does the opposite, speeding up blood flow and increasing inflammation.

While myths about holistic medical care in general, and chiropractic specifically, abound, the truth is that it is an extremely safe and effective form of medical treatment that helps people lead better, healthier lives every day. While heat may be good for muscular injuries (after first using ice to decrease inflammation), when it comes to joints and nerves, heat can cause joints to swell, putting pressure on nerves and causing pain. So, we usually recommend that our patients ice for 20 minutes, three times a day, when they’re dealing with joint injuries.

‘NO PAIN, NO GAIN.’

Beyond typical soreness that can be alleviated by stretching your muscles, you should listen to your body when it tells you to stop moving something. Any pain that you can tell isn’t just soreness, or any numbness or tingling, should give you reason to pick up the phone and give our office a call.

This month proved a rare occasion when selecting our patient of the month — because we couldn’t select just one! In this edition, we would like to spotlight Dottie and Jim Palmer, who have been coming to our office for adjustments for over five years now. They’re an incredibly caring, thoughtful, and outgoing couple, and we at Grand Strand Health and Wellness look forward to their visits to our office. Like many of our patients, Dottie and Jim have a passion for health, and they understand how important good spinal health is for their overall health. They’re not afraid to share their experience with us in front of live audiences at our events because they care deeply about their friends and their communities. They know that by coming to our office, we can help anyone enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle. Jim and Dottie are perfect embodiments of the kind of active lifestyle that good chiropractic care can get you. Having initially moved to the Conway area from Arizona just over five years ago, they love to travel around the country and see new places in their camper. Dottie can tell you all the best vacation spots in Arizona, so if you’re ever headed that way, we’ll let you know of some of her suggestions! They love to share stories of their adventures with us, their friends, and anyone who wants to listen. When they’re not traveling anywhere and everywhere

in the United States, they’re probably spending time with their children and grandchildren, who live in the area as well.

We’re so happy to help the Palmers — and all of our patients, for that matter — lead lives in which they can enjoy all sorts of people, places, and experiences this world has to offer. We look forward to hearing about their next camping trip!

By the ‘Beet ’ of Your Heart

There’s an epidemic sweeping the United States, and, no, we aren’t talking about a virus. High blood pressure (aka hypertension) is a huge problem in America. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 45% of adults are living with high blood pressure, which can lead to numerous other problems if not treated, including heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Because of the extent of the problem, researchers have been searching for possible solutions. Many medications help reduce high blood pressure, and exercise also helps, but some studies are providing evidence of another solution you may not have heard of: beet juice. One major study published in the February 2015 issue of Hypertension looked into the effectiveness of beet juice in lowering elevated blood pressure. Going into the study,

researchers knew beets were high in nitrates, which are converted into nitric oxide when digested. When nitric oxide enters your bloodstream, it relaxes and widens blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure. In the 2015 study, researchers monitored subjects who drank a cup of beet juice. They saw the subjects’ systolic blood pressure drop by an average of 7.7 points and their diastolic blood pressure drop by an average of 2.4 points. On top of that, the study also found that beet juice is relatively quick in lowering blood pressure. It does so within a matter of hours, which is a lot faster than a lot of common blood pressure medications, like Lisinopril. (Though Lisinopril, an ACE inhibitor, works very differently than beet juice.) If you suffer from high blood pressure, should you incorporate beet juice into your daily diet? It may be worth considering, but before you do, consult with your primary health care provider, especially if you’re already taking blood pressure medication.

You don’t want to consume anything that will impact your blood pressure further without professional guidance. If your blood pressure is moderately or occasionally high, beet juice may be a way to normalize it without medication. If you decide to drink beet juice, keep two things in mind: It will turn your feces and urine red — this is called beeturia and is perfectly normal — and it can stain your teeth over time. Always drink it with a straw and rinse your mouth afterward!

To kick off the new year, we thought it would be a great opportunity to shine the spotlight on our CEO, Dr. Chris Garner. And before you ask yourself, no, Dr. Garner did not write this article! As a team, we wanted to show him our appreciation after over a year of appreciating us in this newsletter! Since starting Grand Strand Health and Wellness 13 years ago, Dr. Garner has embodied our mission statement as a doctor, a team owner, and a leader. He is willing to invest tremendous resources in the clinic to accomplish our mission, doing so most recently when he began work getting our new office space built. He is always searching for the best possible ways to serve our patients and implementing them in the office, such as when he added the active therapy option to our methods of care.

Dr. Garner is incredibly passionate about your health. He truly believes that

family as well as the families of his patients. He and his beautiful wife, Shelby, live in the Myrtle Beach area with their three sons and daughter. Their entire family

Make Resolutions Easier With Fitness Challenges

ARE YOU UP FOR A CHALLENGE?

Everyone’s done it. We’ve rung in the new year on the promise that this is our year to get healthy. We’re going to finally lose the weight, eat healthier, and feel better than ever. Sadly, many of us fail at this endeavor every single year . Let’s make 2021 different! Work toward your wellness goals by trying monthly challenges. These challenges allow you to focus on one area of your wellness each month, which will ultimately ensure you create sustainable habits. Here are three challenges to get you started! JANUARY: STEP UP Getting extra steps in during the day is the quickest way to introduce more activity into your life. Start easy and just track your regular steps for one week. Then, set a goal to get 1,000 more steps than that in the following week and build from there. Keep going until you’re regularly hitting a number that is at least 5,000 steps beyond your baseline! (If you don’t have an Apple Watch, Fitbit, or other fitness tracking device, find an old-fashioned pedometer and get to work!) FEBRUARY: DRINK UP Tracking your water intake and challenging yourself to drink more can help you feel more energized and make progress on your other goals. Start by calculating how much water you need to consume. Experts suggest taking your body

weight, dividing it by two, and drinking that many ounces of water each day. (For example, a person who weighs 150 pounds should drink 75 ounces of water.) Can you drink that much water each day for 30

days? If not, drink more each day throughout the month until you reach your goal. Give it a shot. We guarantee you’ll have more energy!

MARCH: BULK UP Choose one area of your body to focus on this month. Want to improve your arm strength? Work your way up from five to 50 pushups throughout the month. Follow the same formula with squats if you want to focus on your legs. Or, try planking to strengthen your core. Start the month by holding the plank for 30 seconds and work your way up to 2–3 minutes! As you progress in each challenge, you’ll notice significant improvement. For the best results, rest whatever area of your body you’re focusing on during your regular exercise routine. (That’s how muscle grows!)
