WORKING TOGETHER TO KEEP CHILDREN SAFE

T he third week of September is Child Passenger Safety Week. This week highlights just how crucial it is to protect children while they’re riding in motor vehicles. At Hare Wynn, we feel passionately about this and are proud to say that we do what we can to ensure that children are safe. Hare Wynn is the sole benefactor of the Patient Health and Safety’s car seat program for patients at Children’s of Alabama (a truly remarkable initiative). For this September newsletter edition, we’d like to feature Marilyn Prier who oversees the car seat program and is the department director for Patient Health and Safety at Children’s of Alabama. Before the car seat program started at Children’s of Alabama, our team got together and talked a little bit about the importance of starting a program like this for patients. At the time, I was the discharge planner, and the same day we had that conversation, a family in my care requested a car seat for their child, (which we were able to help with). It made us realize that we truly did need this program—we just didn’t expect it to happen that day. At Children’s of Alabama, we provide patient education and assistance through many in-house programs, including the car seat program. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama partners with Children’s to provide Body Trek, a program for area elementary schools. The program is an interactive exhibit that teaches injury prevention and health education. Safe Sitter is another popular community program (for 11, 12, and 13-year- old youths) that teaches them the fundamentals of safe babysitting. We also partner with the Alabama State Board of Education and the Alabama Board of Nursing to provide summer workshops for school nurses statewide. Like these programs, the car seat program is essential to our mission of keeping our patients safe and is made possible by HareWynn’s support.

The program allows us to provide car seats at no cost to any family that needs one to get their child home from the hospital. It doesn’t matter how the child was transported to the hospital — airlifted by helicopter, brought by ambulance from an accident, or brought to the hospital on their guardian’s lap. This program allows patients’ families to skip the worry and hassle of running to the store to get a car seat to get their child home safely. We have any kind of seat that they might need right here.

Through the program, car seats are available to all departments at the hospital, including outpatient clinics at Children’s. However, the emergency department at Children’s utilizes the car seats provided by HareWynn more frequently than other areas in the hospital. Most car seat manufactures recommend that a seat involved in a car crash not be used after the crash. For this reason, these patients almost always need a new seat to replace the one they were in at the time of the crash. The car seat program allows them to leave their potentially unsafe seat with us while we provide themwith a new, safer, one. This program has been in place for many years, but only in the past few years have we been able to offer car seats free of charge. When the car seat programwas first started many years ago, we requested a $30.00 charge for the seat. The amount requested was only about a third of the cost of a new seat, but very few of the caregivers were able to pay anything toward the cost. When HareWynn came into the picture as a sponsor, the programmade an even greater impact because we could offer the car seats free of charge to everyone in need. HareWynn donates money for us to buy the car seats — including booster seats, convertible seats, and infant seats. With HareWynn’s help, patients and their caretakers are able to have one more stressor taken off of their plate during an otherwise stressful time. I’ve seen so many parents and guardians who are so grateful for the car seats. Some act like it’s a new car! It’s so heartwarming to see howmuch of a difference they make to these families. But without HareWynn as a sponsor, it would be so much harder for us to provide this needed service. Just as our parents are grateful to receive their brand- new car seats, we are truly grateful for the efforts of HareWynn. With themworking alongside us, we can continue making a difference in our community and for the families who live here.

A TIME TO CELEBRATE OUR TEAM AND REFLECT ON THE LABOR MOVEMENT

can to honor what Labor Day represents and to acknowledge all the individuals who work in our country, especially during these trying times. Essential workers are going to work each day, risking their health to ensure the public has access to food, health care, and even automotive repair services. Without these hardworking people, it would be difficult to have access to the things we need to get through our days. So, it’s important to take the time to show how much these workers mean not just for the public, but also for the businesses they’re dedicating their time and efforts to. At Hare Wynn, we know how valuable our team members are to our company and our clients. Without our staff, we could not give the people who are victims of neglect a voice, nor could we provide the help people need, both inside and outside the office. We consider ourselves lucky indeed to have such amazing individuals working side by side with

In the 19th century, the labor movement influenced the American working class in a major way. Before the movement, workers were overworked and exposed to abysmal and dangerous job conditions. The average American was expected to work a 12- hour day, seven days a week. Employers didn’t give many immigrants or extremely poor workers breaks, nor did they provide sanitary facilities or even access to fresh air. In the late 1800s, the workers decided enough was enough. On Sept. 2, 1882, some 10,000 workers took unpaid time off and marched from city hall to Union Square in New York to protest these conditions. This event became the first Labor Day parade in our history and was the start of major change. It was these workers’ efforts, who fought for their rights

over a century ago, that resulted in meaningful workplace changes. Today, workers enjoy safer working conditions, 8-hour workdays, and many other benefits.

This movement had such a significant influence on our country, so it’s important to do what we

us and working through the challenges that have come our way, especially during the pandemic. Everyone was quick to adapt to this new and uncertain situation so that we could continue working with our clients as smoothly as possible. Our team’s determination has shone brightly these past few months, proving that we can handle anything that comes our way. But this isn’t the only time our team has pulled together to push forward. Every year, our attorneys, paralegals, litigation support staff, marketing team members, department directors, and many other team members show how dedicated they are to our clients, our team, and our firm. And that’s not all. All of our team members take the time out of their day to also help Hare Wynn support the community, outside of the office. Each person here volunteers their time to help support charities, organizations, and nonprofit groups that directly impact the clients and groups we represent. We take pride in doing our part to support organizations such as the Alabama Head Injury Foundation, and health care providers, like Children’s of Alabama. All of us are always searching for ways to make our communities better places to live. Although we might not be able to participate in a march this Labor Day, we want to celebrate and recognize each other’s hard work and dedication, both within and outside the firm. It’s through our team’s efforts that Hare Wynn can continue to reach out to people who are suffering or are unsure of where to turn.

The Best Educational Tools to Help Students Succeed

Educational Tools to Improve Digital Learning Kids these days face so many more distractions from academics than their parents did. It’s not as easy to focus on homework when TikTok, YouTube, and all sorts of video games beckon. Instead of trying to prevent screen time, why not allow students to engage with technology that will help promote their learning rather than distract from it? Here are three tools to help students at different age levels get the most from online learning. Beanstalk

with The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. EduHam is a free digital program for students and their families that provides history lessons on the Founding Era of the United States. It also brings art into the mix — Miranda shows students how to create their own performance pieces based on primary source documents, which they can then share in the app. The program is geared toward students in sixth through 12th grade, though everyone is welcome to participate. Fiveable For high school students, the most looming challenges include the SAT and Advanced Placement (AP) exams that are so important for college. Enter Fiveable, the amazing free resource that houses thousands of livestreams, study guides, trivia games, and other resources for 15 AP subjects. Started by a former teacher, Fiveable is passionate about giving students the resources they’ll need to be successful now and into the future. With so many resources out there, students can use technology in plenty of ways to help them be successful. Here’s to a Fall season full of learning!

While Beanstalk is an online learning tool, the beauty of it is that the classes and videos aim to pull kids “out of the screen to do real-world physical activities.”These include science experiments, building projects, and more. Experienced teachers provide engaging lessons and learning tools, and many of them are free. EduHam What better way to learn about the history of our nation than through one of the nation’s most popular musicals? “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda launched this learning platform in 2016 along with the show’s director and in partnership
