TREKKER 100 Composite planks look like wood and they can be worked like wood, but unlike wood they do not need to be protected from the elements resulting in a lower maintenance alternative. MELBOURNE: NEW LOCATION

‘Enduring House’ is a grand old double-fronted Edwardian Dame on a large north-facing side of a leafy street in Brunswick West. The brief was for sympathetic refurbishment of the existing home, an extension to provide more space for a family of five and significant upgrades to the energy efficiency of the building. This included insulating under the floors throughout and replacing the original floors in the existing house with new FSC © engineered flooring. Builders Chris and Jai from Pledge Builders are both certified passive house tradespeople and at Enduring House have applied some of the basic principles, like properly installed and complete insulation, as well as using exterior membranes and detailing in such a manner that we achieved a high level of “draft” proofing. On completion the house was pressure tested by certified passive house builders and achieved an 8.99 ACH rating, high for any type of renovation of an older home and a tribute to the builder’s passive house building skills.

Below is a list of the works that achieved the high ACH rating:

• Replaced most of the windows in the house with timber- framed Argon-filled double-glazed windows.

• Replaced drafty original floors in the existing house with new floorboards, insulating underneath the floors throughout.

• Relined internal walls of existing and adding wall and ceiling insulation throughout.

• Kept existing footprint by utilising attic space of pitched roof extension.

• Removed ducted heating and replaced with healthy radiant hydronic heating.

• The passive solar design includes fixed shading to the north for the summer sun.

• Living, dining and kitchen areas oriented to the north. Majority of glazing is to the north with minimal in this area to the west. • Passive ventilation includes an operable skylight on the top level to ventilate hot air from the house using the stairs as a thermal chimney.

• Installed ceiling fans throughout.

• Added a 5000L litre custom tall water tank in a narrow space plumbed to toilets and laundry.

• Installed air-drying racks and rails in the laundry.

• Brass tapware handles and door hardware are all locally manufactured.

• Repurposed existing coloured glass window internally in the main bedroom upstairs.

• Repurposed existing appliances.

To assist in delivering on an important element of the brief, improving the energy efficiency of the home, Havwoods supplied Lucerne from the PurePlank Collection. Products in this collection utilise a click system resulting in tighter joins and are suitable to be laid over underlay, both features assist to limit air leakages - an essential component in creating a more environmentally friendly, or Passive House. In addition, Lucerne is an FSC © certified engineered flooring and cladding product. This ensures it has been sourced and manufactured following strict eco- friendly practices to ensure the safety and well- being of our eco-system, wildlife and people. The tone and texture of Lucerne from the PurePlank Collection was selected to compliment both the old and the new parts of the home. It created a warm, durable base on a palette of hardwood timber, porcelain/ceramic surfaces and brass details.

SET THE MOOD WITH DARK FLOORING

What are some considerations when choosing dark flooring? “Choosing the right shade of dark flooring is also important. Always look at your undertones and the other colours you will have in the space to make sure it all flows and compliments each other nicely. There are so many shades of darker flooring so you will need to decide whether you want to go a lighter brown or if you want to go really dramatic and go to an ebony.” “It’s also important to think about your lifestyle and how your family lives. You will find that you do see more dirt, dust and animal hair on dark floors which means they are a little more high maintenance (but totally worth it in our opinion).”

Light flooring is certainly a popular choice, but in the last few months we have seen an increase in interest for dark flooring. Dark flooring is an exceptional choice for projects where the owner is seeking an interior element that brings a touch of class, interest, or differentiation to a space. Havwoods spoke to Court+Riss from Bone and Blanc Interior Design Studio about why dark flooring can be a statement choice and what to consider if a darker variant has made it on to your project shortlist. What is it about dark floors that is appealing for certain projects? “We think that choosing dark floors can really add a richness and an element of class and sophistication within the home that light flooring just can’t achieve. Dark floors are truly a statement and when paired with lighter elements it can ground a whole space.” Is there a certain style of project that really suits dark floors? “We find that dark flooring definitely has its place and lends itself to certain styles. You can primarily make darker flooring work in a traditional, minimalist, modern or art deco space.”

THE ROAD TO SUSTAINABILITY BEGINS HERE.

Of course, you always want to deal with reputable timber companies who wouldn’t dream of importing illegally logged timber. Many timber suppliers will tell you, often in good faith, that their supplies are from ‘sustainable’ or ‘managed’ sources, or from plantations. However, without an independent certification system, in practice there is often no way of verifying this, or of demonstrating to your clients that you have met their expectations. The earth’s atmosphere is not the only casualty of deforestation. 70% of the world’s plants and animals live in forests and are loosing their habitats to this destruction. This in turn has an adverse effect on local populations. Trees are also vital to the water cycle and in halting soil erosion. Aiding local populations to gain socially and economically by preserving their forests instead of destroying them, is the task of international non-profit organisations like the Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC ® ). The FSC’s mission is to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests, directly or indirectly addressing issues such as illegal logging, deforestation and global warming, and with positive effects on economic development, environmental conservation, poverty alleviation and social and political empowerment.

Look for FSC ® certified products throughout this Wood Book.

Other international organisations you will find referenced in this publication are the PEFC™ (Program of the endorsement of Forest Certification), who concentrate on ensuring that certification is accessible even to small and family owned forests. The Cradle to Cradle Products innovation institute (administrator for the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Products Program) which addresses issues from a different angle, educating and empowering manufacturers to become a positive force for society and the environment. Opting to use more wood is undeniably good for both the individual and the environment. Just make sure that the wood you use is the right wood.

FINANCIAL INSTITUTE SYDNEY, NSW This stunning office project from Endrim, a multidisciplinary design practice, encapsulates creativity at its finest. The detail on this project, from round area signage, a beautiful marble feature integrated into the Italian Collection FSC © Certified Pallido chevron floor, to an open sun- filled meeting area is a master stroke in office design. The mix of wood tones in the cabinetry that integrate with the receded wood ceiling brings a warm and inviting space. The secondary tones of white and black walls help create neutral areas that further integrate the overall design. Upon entering the office you are greeted by a beautiful select grade European oak chevron timber floor, this easily being the main feature in the design which completely surrounds all the office and meeting areas. The warm, light rich tones were needed to offset some of the darker tones in the overall design. The use of the chevron format brings a sense of elegance and openness rarely found in office projects.

The designer’s brief was to create a fresh, relaxing, comfortable yet practical space with pops of colour and touches of Morocco throughout using artwork, light fittings and soft furnishings.The floors needed to be fairly neutral but with plenty of warmth and texture. Although it is a beach house, the client didn’t want the typical light white flooring found in most coastal homes. After having a few samples sent out to her in the post, she visited the Newcastle showroom and was shown one of the newer products, Belmont from our Urban Living Collection, which was exactly what Sally and the client were looking for. The colour wasn’t too light and had lots of warmth and texture which they loved. Best of all, the product was within the client’s budget. Havwoods Belmont Plank works perfectly for this stunning renovation.

SPORTSCRAFT SYDNEY

The designer Mandy Edge was asked to re-imagine the Sportscraft Sydney experience by bringing a new concept to the heritage brand whilst appealing to a wider demographic. The brand felt the store design needed to be refreshed and more reflective of the brand and its core values. It needed to be fresh and modern whilst also approachable and not over designed. It also had to reflect the Australian way of life or lifestyle inadvertently. The chosen flooring product, Ryde plank and herringbone from Havwoods’ V Collection is durable and long lasting and price competitive making it perfect for commercial use. The timber has a beautiful subdued colour tone which was perfect for the concept design. There’s a subtlety in the brushed finish with a sort of worn-in look to the product that really appealed to me and was perfect for the concept of the store design.

The Ryde plank and herringbone timber floors pulled all the other design elements together and gave the space an open, grand feeling with a heritage look due to the herringbone pattern. In contradiction to this, the tones within the timber are light, fresh and quite modern.

The combination of these two opposing elements made it really interesting and perfect for the overall design concept. The completed project had a casual feel with the patterned areas providing a feeling of simple elegance.
