Part two... by Lee Gutteridge Looking at the tracks & signs of lizards around our homes

The is not a skink, although to the spotted sandveld lizard untrained eye, it may appear very similar. It is a brightly coloured old-world lizard species, which is active by day. Its trails often criss-cross a dusty yard in the Hoedspruit area, and they can be seen darting from cover to cover. The young animals are black, with yellow spots, and move in a peculiar hunch-backed, jerky way, and are believed to mimic dangerous beetle species. The tail of these young animals is camouflaged, and can almost be overlooked at a first-glance. Their trails are common to see in fine substrate, and worth looking out for. These lizards are capable of digging burrows, which they regularly do.

protruding from a small hole! Even mating may take place arboreally for this species. The Nile monitor however, is often associated with river banks and soft, yielding substrate. The track is in fact quite commonly found.

Spoor of the young spotted sandveld lizard

Monitors , or Nile, are also common lizards in our region. In my experience we see less of the trails of the rock monitor, due in the main, to the habitats they prefer. Rocky, rugged and often dry, these are not always conducive to holding the spoor. They spend a lot of their time up trees too. They are most commonly seen basking high up a tree, sometimes with only the head rock white-throated , or water such as the and the

Chameleons are poorly represented in terms of diversity here in the Hoedspruit area. We only enjoy one species here, the flap-necked chameleon. This beautiful animal is found throughout most of southern Africa, and has, as its name describes, a flap, or shield, protecting the back of the neck. The spoor is very interesting, and highly variable between walking and running trails.

Plated lizards are also usually associated with outcroppings of rock, and seldom leave a trail in decent substrate, but in some instances their homes are adjacent to perfect sandy soil, such as in a river bed, and the trailsmay be seen. This is the casewith large varieties such as the , a common giant plated lizard lowveld species. The less common rough-scaled plated lizard is a resident of termite mounds, and often co-habitates with dwarfmongoose.

Chameleons sometimes fall prey to boomslang

Geckos Turner's thick- are also common in the region, with the toed gecko being a common nocturnal type, which leaves its trails across suitable habitat. The droppings are also accumulated in their resting places. The smaller diurnal Cape dwarf gecko is rarely on the ground, but its minute scats and tiny eggs are commonly found. Several other wall dwelling, nocturnal varieties are also to be seen, including the Wahlberg's velvet gecko tropical house gecko and the . It is only really likely that the droppings of these two types will be seenwith any regularity.

Agamas are also quite common here. The blue-headed male of the is an arboreal (tree dwelling) species, which tree agama is very well known. The female, who has wonderful camouflage is much less often seen. The only real opportunity to see the tracks of this type of animal comes when they move from tree to tree withing their territories. The spoor, zig- zagging across roads, fromtree to tree is quite common.

What an unexpected year! We began 2020 with rescuing over 25 vultures from a mass poisoning, a busy baby season, a wonderful clinic renovation and with plenty of helping hands from our volunteer programme! And now, halfway through the year we are in an alien situation. Moholoholo is currently being run by a team of 5 skeleton staff and no volunteers! A situation that has not occurred since the beginning of Moholoholo 30 years ago! That's just over 100 resident animals and 26 rehab patients that need to be cared for by the staff staying behind. Luckily, our team is incredibly enthusiastic, and the love of the job means although each day is incredibly busy it goes with no complaints! During the lockdown, that started in March, we have remained open for animal emergencies. Luckily, we gained our essential services permit so we could continue our vital work! We have had 41 animals and birds brought to us in this time, some of which are still being rehabbed but others have already been successfully released or relocated. We have also released some animals that have had a long rehab journey, just before winter fully sets in. We like to release all of our birds and animals whilst there is still a plentiful supply of food so that they have the best chance of survival post release; this means releasing thembefore winter. If they are not ready by this time, we will keep them over the harsh winter months until spring/summer when conditions in the veld are better! We have had a big range of admittances, from tiny pouched mice and baby squirrels to civets and honey badgers!

One civet hit by a car was admitted in the middle of the night and after a few weeks of treatment she was recovered and ready for release.

Sadly, we have had a few birds that were found too late and in a terrible condition, so they unfortunately had to be euthanized. One was a fish eagle that had gotten stuck in some mud with a bad break in the shoulder joint of the wing. But some better news is that some of our babies finally flew the nest! Gracie, our sable calf that came to us last June very weak and anaemic was finally moved to a reserve close by to join other sables, and Lochie, our impala baby that was admitted in January after being paralysed in his back legs, regained all his mobility and has now joined other impalas! Cinnamon and Bun our thick tailed bushbabies moved to their soft release site in April and by the end of the month they had made their way into the big wide world and are still thriving! Finally, Ben our cheeky little goat is nowover 6months old and has gone to live with a female goat close to the rehab! The lockdown has hit theworldhard and the rehab has been no exception. We rely solely on income from tourists that visit the centre daily and on our volunteers that come from around the world! This source of income completely stopped as a result of the pandemic which means we have been and still are struggling to make ends meet. Our animals and birds need to eat, our rehab patients need expensive medications and there is always surprises along the way- like at the end of May when one of our lionesses had a very bad limp that the vet had to come out and check on! We can't wait for volunteers and tourists to visit us again! Alongwith restarting our source of incomewe gain those extra hands to help around the rehab that are so valuable and also so that we can continue to educate people on wildlife and all the problems it is facing! We will be informing every one of our opening dates for tours and volunteer placements as soon as we know, so that we can welcome you through our gates for a wonderful experience once again! Until then, we hope everyone stays safe and healthy!

2 honey badgers and 1 civet have been relocated to safe reserves as they were considered problem animals on nearby farms.

Birdscaping - landscaping for birds source: Appelblaar Nursery, SALI and Cultera

Southern Africa boasts some of the world's most beautiful bird species. As the country's avid bird watchers gear up for Birding Big Day on 30 November, how can you birdscape your landscape to attract feathered guests? Encouraging birds to visit your garden is easy if you create the right environment for them. Birds have simple needs – they require shelter, water and food. If you are able to supply these, they'll definitely visit and may even choose to settle in your landscape.

Suet is especially loved by sparrows, weavers, hoopoe's, barbets and starlings. Traditionally, suet was defined as the hard fat around the kidneys and loins in beef andmutton. However, in terms of bird suet, it is more likely to refer to any fats mixed with a variety of ingredients. Local suet balls or blocks are made from fats mixed with corn meal, peanuts, fruits, or evendried insects. Suet is easily digested and metabolized by birds and is regarded as a high-energy food. Peanut butter suet is possibly themost popular suet fed locally to birds.

How to attract birds to your landscape? Feed the birds

Use a bird feeder for pieces of suet, fruit, bread or bird seed, but remember to feed at irregular intervals or birds may become too dependent on your tray.

Water for birds A water source welcomes the birds. Include a bird bath in a sheltered spot under trees. Shallow stone bird baths can be used in rock gardens and also provide a place for the birds to bathe. A pedestal birdbath, available in a range of different sizes, is preferable if you have cats or neighbourhood felines visit your garden.

Thatchgreenbird feeder Wild bird seed feeder Compact hanging suet cage | | Appelblaar Nursery @ Kamogelo supplies a range of hanging bird feeders and seed trays, as well as the food for feeders which range fromwild seed bells to a range of suet for birds.

Designing shallow water features into your landscape is the best way to naturally encourage birds into your landscape. Design a pond with a sloping pebble or sand beach so waders canmake their way into thewater.

Aloes are especially important as they flower during thewinter when there are fewother resources for insects. - Seed eaters Local birds that eat seeds include waxbills, finches, fire finches, canaries, doves, sparrows and bronze mannikins. Plant a variety of grasses and allow them to grow tall enough to set seed.

Melinis nerviglumis

Panicum Maximum

Photos from pza.sanbi.org

Grasses species to consider: bristle-leaved red-top grass (Melinis nerviglumis), small panicum (Panicum ecklonii), Guinea grass (Panicum maximum) and common reed (Phragmites australis). - Nectar eaters Sunbirds and sugarbirds love nectar. Good nectar-producing plant species include the coral tree (Erythrina lysistemon), Cape honeysuckle (Tecoma capensis), red-hot pokers (Kniphofia praecox), proteas, pincushions, aloes and tree fuchsia (Halleria lucida).

Plants for birdscaping In addition to wild seed, suet and water, birdscape your landscape by planting a selection of food plants that cater to the needs of a variety of bird species. - Insect eaters Birds that eat insects include fly-catches, shrikes, bee-eaters and the popular Cape robin-chat. Planting flowering trees and shrubs attracts insects, which in turn attracts insectivorous birds. Choose from any of the indigenous acacias, the coral tree (Erythrina lysistemon), tree fuchsia (Halleria lucida), weeping boer-bean (Schotia brachypetala), buffalo thorn (Ziziphus mucronata), wild pear (Dombeya rotundifolia), Cape honeysuckle (Tecoma capensis) and the wild honeysuckle (Turraea floribunda).

HOEDSPRUIT: PROUDLY AT THE HEART OF THE KRUGER TO CANYONS BIOPSHERE REGION

Did you know that you are living in or visiting a SPECIAL landscape? It is so special that it is worthy of an internationally UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Biosphere Region designation! UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme provides a framework for exploring local solutions to challenges by mainstreaming biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, integrating economic, social and environmental aspects and recognizing their vital linkages within specific learning landscapes adjacent to Protected Areas (as core areas). In our magnificent landscape, with the iconic Big Five Kruger National Park and associated Protected Area System in the east, and the northern reaches of the awe inspiring Drakensberg Escarpment Mountains in the west, the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region (K2C BR) connects biodiversity conservation with the development of people, as the custodians of their land and resources through collaborative partnerships. The K2C BR is currently running 13 projects with partners across this landscape linking sustainable development and biodiversity conservation. Project focuses vary from the expansion of protected areas; other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs); capacity building of environmental monitors in rural communities; environmental awareness; water security; alien invasive plant clearing, agro- ecology and sustainable land management. Accom- plishments to date include: 74 010 hectares declared as protected areas; 958 jobs created in the green economy; currently 170 Environmental Monitors in communities and partner supporting host institutions; 14 199ha of land has been rehabilitated and 22 167ha cleared of alien invasive plants. Besides amazing game drives in the savannah, there are ample opportunities to connect to nature in a fun way: A visit to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre, The Blyde Dam Look Out Point, the Timbavati Reserve's Natural HistoryMuseum and the Graskop Lift all provide educational experiences that are underscored by our natural heritage that is worth celebrating. A boat trip on the Blyde Dam and a Panorama Route trip through the Strijdom Tunnel to the Three Rondavels Look Out Point and Gods Window will awe the visitor and local alike with the stunning landscape views. Hidden gems include a hike in the Lekgalameetse andMariepskop Forest Reserves.

It is in this Landscape that Conservation South Africa (CSA) and the Association for Water and Rural Development (AWARD) is doing world class work ensuring resilience in the Water Sector, the SouthernAfricanWildlifeCollege is training Protected Area Managers, Hoedspruit Hub is training Agro Ecologists, The Greater Kruger Hotel School is training Hospitality Staff, several private providers are training tour guides and the Universities of Witwatersrand and Pretoria have facilities to train their students and conduct research, whilst providing services to our communities. The work of Hloklomela with health education, Eco Children, Nourish, Daktar i , Sefapane and Timbavat i Foundat ions wi th environmental education inspire us all.

At the heart of this diverse Biosphere Region lies the town of Hoedspruit, with its local restaurants and shopping experiences that supports our local economy. Make sure to visit our Farmers' Market on the first Saturday of every month at Bosveld Centre/Khaya Ndlovu Entrance, R40 (White River Road) where local products and innovation are showcased, because although “you can't buy happiness, you can buy local and that's kind of the same thing”
