WASHINGTON’S FAREWELL ADDRESS He Saw Extreme Partisanship as a Major Threat

Second, he issues a warning “in the most solemn manner” against a major threat to America, one which seems even more prevalent now. He calls it “the fury of party spirit.” Washington makes no distinction between political parties. He foresees the evil of over-identifying with any party, in searing terms: The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism.

He goes on:

Since his birthday’s celebrated this month, I thought I’d give some love to George Washington for his Farewell Address he wrote as “that debt of gratitude which I owe to my beloved country.” Surprisingly, he never delivered it as a speech. Instead, he published it in Philadelphia’s American Daily Advertiser on Sept. 9, 1796. The address is the product of Washington’s deep reflection and moving sincerity. Before its release, he labored over several drafts and consulted with his longtime trusted aide, Alexander Hamilton (you know, the guy from the musical). The final result proves it is indeed a labor of love. It spans 32 handwritten pages, composed in long- lost, highly descriptive eloquence that convincingly portrays Washington’s heartfelt convictions. Two things stood out to me. First, he writes to decline a third term as president. He notes his “full conviction” from both his “zeal for your future interest” and “grateful respect for your past kindness.”

It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.

In response to this Founding Father’s sage advice, we should recapture his great hope for us:

The name of American, which belongs to you in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of patriotism.

ARE YOU BEINGWATCHED? If You’re Out on Workers’ Compensation, You Could Be Being Followed

Usually when an employee is hurt on the job, it seems that the insurance company will sometimes do anything to avoid paying. And just when you think they can’t stoop any lower, here’s the shocking truth: Private eyes are watching you. The insurance companies will sometimes pay private investigators to follow you, hoping to catch you doing things you say you can’t. That’s right — strangers may be compiling a secret video of you, especially if you’re severely hurt. So, if you’re out on workers’ comp, always act like somebody’s watching you. And of course, you may never know because these guys are good at not being seen. But, why would the workers’ compensation insurance company do this? A video of you raking the yard for two hours when you claim you can’t use your shoulder can devastate your case. Of course, if they tape your valiant effort to cut the grass despite your back injury, they can cut the camera off as you limp back inside and won’t be around the next day to see you lying on the couch, immobilized in agonizing pain. Private eyes may follow you everywhere, including your home. They’ll follow you driving around town while you run errands. They’ll even go inside the store to tape you entering and leaving. And, for the most

part, it’s legal! As long as you are being observed outside of your home or recorded from a vantage point available to the public, the courts have held you don’t have any reasonable expectation of privacy. If you’re honest about your physical limitations and live within them, private eyes and their secret videos can’t hurt you. Most importantly, if you’re hurt badly and worried about the tricks insurance company might try, contact us so we can help protect your valuable rights so you can get the most compensation possible. Together we’ll develop a plan to overcome the insurance company by using the most powerful weapon of all: the truth.

“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.” Romans 12:9 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

• 2 cups flour • 1 cup white granulated sugar • 1 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp salt • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Cool cakes completely before frosting with icing of choice.

Health Benefits of Being in Love

If you no longer want to receive this newsletter, call Pam at 864.582.0416 or email [email protected] .

It’s crazy to think that being head over heels, madly in love with someone can benefit your body in the same way that broccoli can, but it’s true! Science has proven that being in love comes with myriad health benefits. Fewer colds and natural pain control? Yes, please! Love triggers the “feel good” hormone, dopamine. When you first fall in love — and the butterflies are flying uncontrollably — dopamine is at very high levels, and mentally, you’re happy, healthy, and positive. As the relationship matures, oxytocin, also known as the bonding hormone, blends with dopamine and reduces stress. We all know that stress can lead to a number of health complications, so the less stress, the better! New research has found that just being around someone you love can act as a natural pain reliever. Research has also determined that married people complain less about headaches and back pain. When your mind is happy, your immune system is stronger, making you less prone to getting a cold or stomach bug. Some research has even shown that happily married couples live longer than those who are not happily married. The hormone vasopressin helps to control your blood The Power of Love LOVE REALLY CAN BE A DRUG

pressure. Being in love releases vasopressin into your body, keeping your blood pressure at a healthy level. Both your heart and lungs are also impacted by the love you have for another. If you aren’t in love, you can still reap the benefits through a strong and healthy social support system. When you have friends who bring you joy and happiness, even just a hug may help to release positive hormones and keep your health on track. Take time to invest in positive relationships to keep your heart and body healthy and happy, both literally and figuratively.

So, what are you waiting for? Let the love flow!
