HARD WORK PLAYED A ROLE, TOO. Just My Luck?
But we happened to bump into each other, and we started talking. During that conversation, she emphasized the importance of having the right advisor to help me choose my classes. She gave me the name of an excellent advisor, and I decided to check him out. He worked in the chemistry department, not biology, but he
St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, and it’s a time when many people’s minds turn to luck. I can’t say that I believe in lucky four-leaf clovers and rabbits’ feet; I think most of the outcomes we have in life are due to our actions. But some things do happen by chance, even if they only result in about 5%-10% of our success.
was the right person to help me. My previous advisor with the biology department hadn’t considered my personal preferences, goals, or strengths and weaknesses. Instead, they gave me a list of courses they thought everyone should take. But this advisor took the time to get to know me, and he helped me choose classes that were a better fit. Later, he wrote me a letter of recommendation to enter my physical therapy program. I’m not sure if I would be a physical therapist today, if not for his support.
I’ve had many things go right to get me where I am today. There are times I was in the right place at the right time, but more importantly, I had the right intention. Hitting the lottery might be “lucky,” but running a successful business requires determination and a clear goal. As a young man, I knew I wanted to be a physical therapist, and I chose to major in physical therapy at the University of Michigan-Flint. While there, I had the good luck of running into a few people who helped me along my path. During my first year of college, I struggled, especially in biology. I had been an honors student in high school, but college turned into a whole new experience. I didn’t have the study habits I needed to succeed, and my first semester didn’t go well.
Without a doubt, chance helped me along my path. But reflecting on these experiences, I’m reminded that you can’t benefit from good luck unless you put yourself out there. I received these opportunities, but it was up to me to make the most of them. I could have been too proud to accept help with my studying, and I could have decided to ignore the advice of a stranger. Because I followed through — and worked hard — I benefited from the chances given to me. If you want to get lucky, I think there are two key steps. First, you must want something and take your own measures toward achieving your goal. (Otherwise, luck won’t have a chance to find you.) Second, you should learn to recognize when luck comes your way, or you’ll miss the opportunity. You won’t get lucky by sitting around and waiting for magic to happen. I certainly didn’t.
Luckily, a girl in my biology class came to the rescue. We started talking, and I shared some of my academic problems. She helped teach me the study skills I needed, and my grades improved. In the end, my will and determination drove me to learn new studying techniques so I could follow through on them. But it was luck to meet this particular person who was willing to give me the help I needed. A chance encounter with a different young woman had an even more profound effect. I was still a freshman, and she was a senior, so we didn’t take the same classes, and our paths didn’t have much opportunity to cross.

After working all day, it can be tough to keep up with your kids. Sometimes, it can even feel like working a second job. While you still need to be physically and emotionally present, there are ways to exert less energy and still play with kids of all different ages. If your baby is under 1 year old, they are too young to play by themselves, but you can still play while not physically overdoing it. Resting on the floor with your baby and showing them some sensory toys or reading to them is both entertaining and educational. Another great option for your infant is to blow bubbles for them— they will love watching the bubbles float and dance through the air. If your toddler is on the go and walking, they may require a little more to stay adequately entertained. Try sitting on the floor and singing nursery rhymes. You can also let your child explore objects in the roomwhile you build upon their language by explaining what different items are. Since you’re
around the house and use furniture and pillows to build a course. Think of incorporating activities such as having them crawl under the dining room table, walk across a blanket bridge, or hop

invite their stuffed animals to join!). Playing doctor is also a fun option and opportunity to be lazy and sleepy if you get to play the part of the sickly patient. You may also get out the building blocks and create with them— this requires little physical exertion and is a great developmentally appropriate activity. If your child is 4 years or older, they are likely very active. What about hosting an indoor obstacle

The most important thing is to get creative and never feel guilty for needing to scale back a bit after having a long day. With these interactive ideas and tips, you will make it through the tough days and still feel like the super-parent you are!
SUCCESS STOR I ES !
Dr. Adams has built a great practice in the city of Flint. The staff is kind and knowledgeable, and they genuinely care about patients. Over the course of my treatment, I saw a chronic hip condition resolve. Dr. Adams correctly diagnosed my complex case, and I felt some immediate relief after my initial consultation. The team was responsive to my needs, adjusted my treatment plan as needed, and worked with me over several weeks to achieve a great result. I am grateful that such a capable and caring practice exists so close to home. I was pleased with the experience and recommend Horizon Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation!

IS THAT PAIN BURSITIS? Learn How To Prevent, Treat, and Recognize It
If all of this sounds a little like tendinitis to you, you’re not wrong. Though the conditions are similar, the bursae and tendons are different body parts. Your doctor can generally tell the difference between the two conditions by the location of your pain, but sometimes they may request imaging tests. Unfortunately for some unlucky patients, it is possible to have both tendinitis and bursitis. Mild cases of bursitis can often be diagnosed with a physical examination, and recovery generally involves lots of rest. Ice can help with swelling, and over-the-counter medications can help with the pain. For more severe cases, physicians may request X-rays or MRIs. Bursae can also become infected. Doctors may prescribe antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, and surgery is occasionally needed. Unfortunately, some people develop chronic bursitis, but physical therapy can help. A physical therapist can teach about proper posture and provide patients with techniques so they can avoid re-injury; recommend ways to reduce pressure on joints; and teach new exercises that will increase a patient’s range of motion. If bursitis is causing a problem in your life, give Horizon PT a call today!
Have you ever experienced persistent pain around your joints, muscles, or bones during movement? If it was accompanied by swelling, it might have been bursitis. Bursitis is a common condition, but many people have never heard of it or the small fluid-filled sacs it affects. You have bursae all over your body — around 150 of them, in fact. Concentrated around areas where bone would otherwise rub on muscle, tendons, or skin, they’re like little air pillows for our bodies, helping reduce friction and inflammation. But sometimes, a bursa can become irritated or inflamed. It’s particularly prone to happen around the joints and results in pain and swelling. Repetitive movements are the most common culprit in bursitis cases, but excessive pressure on a specific joint is also a factor. Some hazards are occupational, such as with painters, carpenters, or manual laborers who complete the same motions repeatedly. Home maintenance activities like raking, gardening, scrubbing, or shoveling also present a risk, as do repetitive recreational activities like tennis, golf, and baseball. Finally, age and conditions like arthritis, diabetes, and thyroid disease make bursitis more likely.

Create a Keepsake for Good Luck Year-Round
MAKE A 4-LEAF CLOVER KEEPSAKE
BUT F IND THE ELUS IVE GOOD- LUCK CHARM F IRST
Clover Craft Once you find your clover, preserve the luck in it all year by placing it in a picture frame. First, gently press the clover leaves between the pages of a large book for several days to flatten them out. After pressing, you can add green food coloring to your clover to enhance its color. Once it’s dry, clean it and let it sit overnight. Then, place your clover onto acid-free paper, cut to fit the size of a picture frame of your choice. Next, use acid-free glue to keep your clover in place, and finally, seal your frame shut. You now have your personal good luck charm!
One of St. Patrick’s Day’s most popular symbols is a four-leaf clover. In Ireland, these clovers represent luck and good fortune. Each leaf on the clover has a different meaning — faith, hope, love, and success. It’s a tradition to find a four-leaf clover on St. Patrick’s Day and do activities involving this lucky leaf. So, how do you find these good-luck
charms, and what can you do with them? How to Find a 4-Leaf Clover
Although it may seem difficult, it’s easier than you might think. First, find a dense patch of white clover — near it is where four-leaf clovers reside. They are different from the rest and are often smaller, so keep that in mind when you look for the lucky green clovers.
Instead of staring at the patch in close detail and counting leaves, search the patch without focusing on the tiny details. This increases the odds of eyeing a four-leaf clover because the different patterns, shapes, and sizes of these clovers will jump out at you. If you find one, keep looking! There’s a chance another one might be nearby.
Searching for a four-leaf clover and creating a keepsake will be a great bonding experience for you and your family. We wish you luck! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
