HOW WE BUI LD OUR FUTURE Looking Forward January is a time for me to look to the future and think about where I want to go during the new year. My goals for 2019 are to expand Horizon PT and spend more time with my family. Since I’m a business owner and a father, these goals seem obvious, but I have put a great deal of thought into the best ways to realize them. To start, I want to hire a new physical therapist and patient care coordinator by July. I’ve given myself plenty of time to achieve this goal because it’s not something I want to rush. I owe it to my patients and my company to hire good, quality employees. It’s not enough to just have the technical skills to do the job; I’m also looking for people who genuinely want to help others. You can teach someone skills, but you can’t make them a good person. When I interview potential new hires, I work to find people who will make the best teammembers. In my experience, the best teammembers click with the rest of the staff, have our patients’ best interests at heart, and help us grow in the direction we want to go. These are qualities you can only find when you sit down and talk to someone. Our hiring process can take a while because I want to make sure the person sitting in front of me is going to help my patients get better. Shifting to my personal life, I want to spend quality time with my family this year. I would love to take a family vacation again. Last year, we went to Cancun on an all-inclusive trip, and it was the best time. We got to kick back, enjoy the nice weather, and not think about all the little stressors life throws at us. My eldest son, Jerome, had a ball. He loved playing on the beach and going down the waterslide. My favorite part of the trip was watching him have fun. The reason I work so hard is so that my family doesn’t have to stress and can enjoy simple pleasures like the ones we experienced in Mexico. It felt good to see my son having fun, and I remembered how important it is to find time to be present with myself and my family. It helps clear my mind, and when I go back to the “real world,” I find this extra energy I didn’t have before. Now that our youngest son is here, I would love to take another family trip. I don’t know where we’ll go, but it will be somewhere warm by the ocean.

All that said, I’m not just thinking about what I want to achieve this time of year. I also have the privilege of hearing my patients’ New Year’s resolutions. Health is on everyone’s mind, and a lot of patients come to physical therapy to get in shape or overcome pain they’ve struggled with for years. If you have something specific you want to accomplish this year, I’d love to hear about it! And if you know a friend or a family member who could use our help to achieve their goals, please send them our way! I want to help more people and build a practice where everyone who comes through our doors fulfills their goals.
Thank you to all my patients who supported me in 2018 and are continuing their support in 2019. Happy New Year!

3 Wives’ Tales Proven True Mom Really Does Know Best
so if you feel a tickle in your throat, try a clove before you open the medicine cabinet. HEARTBURN MEANS A HAIRY BABY It’s hard to list wives’ tales without bringing up one about pregnancy. Many are solely based on intuition, but a few that sound odd are legitimate. In 2007, a study done by Johns Hopkins attempted to debunk the myth that heartburn during pregnancy would mean a hairy baby at birth. Instead of proving it wrong, they found that 82 percent of women with severe heartburn during pregnancy gave birth to hairy babies. Turns out the hormones that cause heartburn in pregnant women also affect fetal hair growth. JOINT PAIN PREDICTS THE WEATHER Did you ever look at your mom with skepticism when she would predict rain because her knees hurt? If so, you might owe your mom an apology, because there is a scientific connection. The drop in barometric pressure that’s common during storm weather causes pain in arthritic joints.
“Make a face like that, and it’ll stay that way forever.” You may have heard something like this fromMom’s book of wisdom. Maybe you never disputed the idea that mother knows best. But as you grew up, it slowly became clear that hair doesn’t grow back faster and thicker if you shave it, cracking your knuckles doesn’t cause arthritis, and gum doesn’t stay in your stomach for months after you swallow it. After a whirlwind of wives’ tales over the years, many common claims have been put under scrutiny. Wives’ tales have been known as pseudoscience and blind intuition, but even as many were disproved, some surprisingly proved to hold weight. Here are three wives’ tales that have proven to be true. GARLIC CURES COLDS For decades, moms have professed the healing properties of garlic, suggesting it can cure colds and help the body fight sickness. It turns out they were absolutely right. Garlic has antiviral properties that strengthen the immune system and nutrients that help combat illnesses. The effects of garlic can actually be more effective than over-the-counter flu medications. Some studies show that regular consumption of raw garlic lessens the likelihood of getting a cold,
A Pain-Free Tomorrow OUR PAT I ENTS SAY I T BEST
It helped my back and legs and arms get stronger. There was no more back pain. The pain was gone, and I could sleep longer without having to worry about back pain that used to wake me up. I feel like this really helped me.
This is the best physical therapy place I have ever been to. I love it! They make you feel like family.

NEWYEAR, NEWJOINTS?
What to Consider Before Joint Replacement Surgery
Adapting to a new joint will take some time, so it’s important to prepare before surgery. You should learn how to correctly use any mobility aids; adjust to changes in lifestyle, nutrition, and supplementation; and prepare your home environment so moving will be as easy as possible after surgery. After the joint is replaced, most patients believe they will be able to jump right back into their old lifestyle pain-free. This is not the case, and attempting to do so can be dangerous. First, your body needs time to recover from the trauma of surgery. A few days in the hospital are necessary so your doctor can monitor the beginning of your recovery. Additionally, just like with any prosthesis, you will need to learn how to use this part of your body again. The best way to teach your new joint to move normally is through physical therapy. Rebuilding your strength and learning how to move again is a slow and exhausting process, mentally and physically. Having the support and guidance of a physical therapist can mean the difference between making a full recovery and suffering from a damaged prosthetic after surgery. If living a pain-free life is part of your New Year’s resolution, give Horizon PT a call at 810-620-8042. Make sure you have the right team on your side after joint replacement surgery.
Around 1 million patients will undergo joint replacement surgery in 2019.
After years of joint pain brought on by injury, arthritis, or the wear and tear of life, these patients will finally decide enough is enough! Will you be one of them?
When a joint wears away, inflammation, pain, swelling, and stiffness follow. If left unchecked, these damaged joints can restrict blood flow to certain areas of the body, leaving the surrounding bones unable to repair themselves. Total knee arthroplasty is one of the most common and costly surgical procedures, but after living in pain for years, many patients may also need hip, shoulder, wrist, ankle, and elbow replacements. Expensive joint replacement surgery does not have to be the first option to live pain-free in the new year. Many doctors will start by prescribing lifestyle changes and specialized exercise programs under the supervision of a physical therapist. Exercises that improve flexibility and maintain mobility can also help relieve pain. Conservative measures should always be the first line of defense, but when surgery is necessary, there are a few things to keep in mind.

3 Ways the Winter Weather Helps You Burn Calories
SHOVELING, SCRAPING, AND SHIVERING 3 Ways the Winter Weather Helps You Burn Calories W inter can make it hard to stay physically fit. Between the aversion to stepping outside onto your ice- covered porch and the urge to drink that third cup of hot chocolate, these winter months can lead to burn up to 56 calories during a 15-minute scrape
session. What’s more, you can’t slack off and skip this activity; it’s a necessary part of your
unwanted weight gain. Nowadays, people will try almost anything to get rid of those extra pounds — yoga with goats, hula hoop fitness routines, and even underwater spinning classes. Believe it or not, you’re already working harder than you think this time of year. Here are three ways the winter weather helps you burn calories. 1. Shoveling Love it or hate it, if you live in an area with a lot of snowfall, shoveling is a necessary chore every time it snows. While the repetition associated with this task bothers a lot of people, according to a Harvard study, you actually burn approximately 230 calories for every 30 minutes you shovel. 2. Scraping In addition to shoveling snow, you can also get a workout by scraping those layers of ice off your windshield. In fact, you can
morning routine. 3. Shivering
Your body works hard to maintain a healthy temperature, and when that freezing wind rolls in, you’ll likely
notice your body start to shiver. Shivering is a physiological response that produces heat through small, rapid muscle movements. It also assists with weight loss; you can burn up to 100 calories in 15 minutes of shivering. Of course, you should never purposefully make yourself chilly just to shed a few pounds, but if you have to be outside for a prolonged period of time this winter, know that your body is helping you out in more ways than one.
