Horizon PT - November 2020

physical therapy and rehabilitation November 2020

Here’s a handful of our wonderful patients. Thank you to everyone!

GRATITUDE FOR ALL THE SUPPORT WE’VE RECEIVED THIS YEAR AND EVERY YEAR Helping Us Keep Our Doors Open

support our clinic with their referrals. Our patients are the lifeblood of Horizon PT, therefore without their support, it would be a lot harder to keep our doors open! Over the years, the support that my staff and I have received has pushed me to work harder and learn everything I can to help even more people rehabilitate themselves. That has helped Horizon PT grow, which brings me back to this year in particular. It’s no secret that the pandemic and economic downturn have been particularly hard on small businesses. Many have closed their doors for good. But because of the support of our community, we’ve been able to remain open, even if we did have to shut down initially. Throughout this year, we’ve worked hard to ensure that our clinic will be a safe and healthy environment for anyone who comes to us for an appointment. We do extra cleaning, spray everything down regularly, and take other steps to ensure the safety of our patients. After all, it’s because of all of you that this Thanksgiving, we can be thankful that Horizon PT has weathered this storm. So, in conclusion, I want to say thank you to all of you who have trusted us to help you heal and get back to the activities you love. You’re the reason our doors are still open. Happy Thanksgiving!

Even though 2020 has been incredibly hard for so many people — and we shouldn’t minimize those hardships — I think that in light of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, we can still find things to be thankful for. If I had to pick one word to describe what I’m particularly thankful for this year (even though it’s something I’ve been thankful for since I opened my doors), that word would be “support.” Since I opened Horizon PT in 2012, it’s been the support of family, friends, loved ones, and patients that has kept us going, especially in a year like this one. Running and maintaining a physical therapy clinic isn’t always easy. In fact, more often than not, it’s hard, even if it is rewarding. In the early years of running Horizon PT, I was grateful for the ways that my immediate family — especially my parents and grandparents — helped get the clinic on so many people’s radars. They made sure to mention it to everyone they could, however many times they could. Sometimes, the best marketing is just repeating the same message over and over again. Today, I am grateful that my parents and grandparents did just that. As the years have gone on, I’ve also been fortunate enough to have patients who believe that the work we do is worth sharing with their family, friends, and neighbors. Many of our first patients came from other physical therapists, where they didn’t feel they’d been cared for as they should have. Understandably, that meant we had a small amount of time to convince them that Horizon PT was different. We were able to get them desired results fast, which in turn meant they were willing to turn around and

And How Do I Prevent It From Affecting My Family? WHAT IS FAMILY BURNOUT

irritability. The more demanding your work and home responsibilities are, the more susceptible you are to family burnout. Single parents are especially susceptible, but burnout can drastically affect romantic relationships and even children. Most people are not used to spending so much time together at home. With all that in mind, don’t worry — family burnout is preventable. It starts with creating a balance between work and rest. While it might feel like you don’t have a moment to spare between work and taking care of the kiddos in the house, identifying those spare moments in your day is absolutely necessary for your health. Establish a routine that defines time for work, sleep, studying, and other tasks. You’ll then move from task to task easier, leaving less room for conflict between others in the household. You’ll also see more clearly when you can rest! Those breaks don’t have to be anything special — a 15-minute walk by yourself outside or a 30-minute stretch with a good book in a comfy chair. Find time to let your kids have a break, too, like playing their favorite games, reading their favorite books, or playing outside. You’ll all feel more refreshed to tackle the remaining tasks of the day. Even though you can prevent or minimize burnout through a more balanced routine, sometimes that’s not enough. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Family therapy can be immensely helpful for maintaining your mental health when your own attempts need a boost. These are unique times, so be patient with yourself and your family as you cope with new challenges and routines. Burnout doesn’t have to be inevitable.

According to one study from 2018, over half of all parents surveyed were experiencing some form of burnout (i.e., exhaustion, cynicism, lack of professional satisfaction, etc.) — and that was before the pandemic. Now, as the world enters the eighth month of the coronavirus pandemic, many parents are working from home or dealing with unemployment, and many children are doing school online. Families are spending a lot of time together at home, balancing new routines — and that’s led to family burnout. When you experience “family burnout,” the kind of exhaustion that comes from spending too much time with family, it manifests itself as physical and emotional exhaustion, an inability to handle usual tasks, and increased

IS DEEP TISSUE LASER THERAPY RIGHT FOR YOU? Questions About Laser Therapy

light from the lasers hits cells in the injured area, the specific wavelength causes them to react in a way that promotes regeneration.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM LASER THERAPY? Despite what it might sound like, laser therapy isn’t painful. At most, patients who undergo this type of therapy will experience a soothing warmth as the energy from the lasers cause a reaction in damaged cells. The appointments themselves are very quick and straightforward, only taking around 5–10 minutes. While you might not feel the results immediately, you definitely feel improvement in the affected area after 3–5 sessions. WHAT KINDS OF INJURIES DOES LASER THERAPY WORK FOR? Laser Therapy can treat pain and inflammation associated with a number of different injuries, including sprains and strains, tendonitis and tendonosis, sports injuries, post surgical wounds, and more. It’s the perfect treatment option for anyone who’s tried other noninvasive methods to no avail. For any questions, or to receive an introductory evaluation to see if Laser Therapy is right for you, give one of our clinics a call today or visit our website at HorizonPTAndRehab.com to get in touch.

When you think of what a physical therapist does to help their patients recover from injuries, you probably just imagine them guiding their patients through a series of stretches and exercises. While that is a large part of what a physical therapist does, it’s certainly not the only noninvasive method for healing injuries to your deep tissue. At Horizon PT and Rehab, another method of healing that many of our patients take advantage of is Laser Therapy. WHAT IS LASER THERAPY, AND HOW DOES IT WORK? Laser therapy is a treatment designed to heal pain and inflammation with noninvasive lasers that penetrate down deep into the tissue. At our clinics, we use LightForce Therapy Lasers — a brand used by several collegiate and professional sports teams to help their athletes recover from injuries. When

Clear Your Mind in a Different Way

MEDITATION ALTERNATIVES

FOR PEOPLE WHO DON’ T L IKE TO MEDI TATE Meditation is lauded for its health benefits and is often suggested as an effective way to clear the mind, organize thoughts, and reduce stress. Realistically, however, it’s not for everyone. In fact, some people don’t experience any benefits at all from meditating. In a recent study published in New Scientist about the effectiveness of meditation, researchers confirmed that some people do not benefit from meditation and that about 8% of people who try meditation experience an “unwanted effect,” such as an increase in anxiety. If you’re not interested in meditation, or it just doesn’t work for you, here are some alternative ways to clear your mind and reduce stress. GET SERIOUS ABOUT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. Aerobic exercises — like walking, jogging, running, cycling, and swimming — are great for clearing your mind and getting your body moving. Really, any exercise that gets the heart pumping and increases your respiratory rate will do. Research supports that aerobic exercise is a great alternative to meditation that yields many of the same benefits.

Exercising outdoors or in nature — especially in new places — enhances

these benefits. Because your surroundings are going to be unfamiliar, your mind is more focused, which can help if you’re searching for clarity.

STAY MENTALLY ENGAGED . Many people achieve clarity, focus, and stress reduction through simple but engaging tasks, such as immersing themselves in an adult coloring book, doing brain teasers, or assembling LEGO sets, which proves they can be effective therapeutic tools or alternatives to meditation. The LEGO Company has actually been developing more products for adults with this sort of research in mind. But why LEGO products specifically? In addition to being objects you touch and push together, LEGO products come with clear, step-by-step instructions, which make them easy to put together and allow you to focus more on the task at hand. Even if you don’t complete the piece in one sitting, working on a project a few minutes a day can be a beneficial way to find a little clarity.
